John Rose established a china factory at Coalport beside the Shropshire canal in 1796, having worked for a time at the Caughley pottery works across the River Severn in Jackfield. Coalport became a major centre for fine quality china during the 1800’s. In its heyday Coalport porcelain won many gold medals and prizes at international exhibitions, including the 1851 Great Exhibition held in the Crystal Palace, Hyde Park. Today the Grade II listed buildings are a significant part of Ironbridge Gorge Museums with a world class display of Caughley and Coalport China. factory for expanded clay products - 1965-2012

I headed up to Richmond a couple weekends ago to see Kitty. We headed out to a spot on the Rappahannock river for some fun times and delicious food. After having enjoyed a great day on the water and a dinner with steak, crab, shrimp, and fixings, I brought out some of my light painting gear to show them what it was all about.

A few of them had never seen steel wool in action so I made sure to give them a big spin so they could see what it was all about. This was a couple hours after sunset so I was surprised that I was still able to pick up some of the blue skies in this shot.

Road works jamming up the nation's capital.

Eastleigh Works seems all well with a nice selection of motive power on view. Stalwart 07 007 is on view as is 56049. 43049 can be made out on the right. Behind the 56 were two more 43s one of which was in LNER livery. Also behind the 56 was a GBRf 66 and a DRS 57. I think the unit was a 325 and it looked like it was in ROG Orion livery. A couple of industrial shunters could be spied also.

Out of shot but visible were 50021, 73133 and Rail Adventure power cars 43480 and 43484.

With major works going on at Niddrie West Junction and one line shut, this was the scene at the start as workmen are getting everything into place. Passing on an uneffected line is 68007 working 5G02, 0903 Edinburgh Waverley - Motherwell ECS on the 11th May 2018 at 0927.

On Mam Tor looking for the usual reason, but I decided to try and get a different photo to the ones which we normally see. Okay – I did the gate and the great ridge, but on my way back I was looking for something different.

I didn’t get much in the way of an inversion, but there was a little mist in the valley which was producing a lovely haze in the low morning sun, catching the light beautifully. As I came to the earthworks at the lower end of the summit I came across this sheep who was not in the mood for getting up. She very kindly stayed put while I composed my shot giving me something nice for the foreground. As the background was hazy I chose to blur it slightly by using a longer focal length but with a relatively small aperture. It also allowed me to stay a reasonable distance from the sheep so I didn’t spook it.

Canon EOS-6D with 24-105mm lens at 90mm. f/11 at ISO-50 for 1/50th second. Lee 3 stop soft grad ND filter on the upper part of the image to keep the lovely colours in the top of the image.

An ordinary `service` bus within Chiswick Works is a sight that should logically never be seen. No passing bus route used the Works as a terminus point. So what is RM 2206 doing deep within the site on 31 October 1979? It has come from Turnham Green Garage which had a long association with experimental systems being tried out on buses in service from there so my guess is that the long standing rapport has probably enabled a quick trip to the works to scrounge something that might otherwise have been waited for to get a bus back on the road. But that`s only one possibility. There could be many other reasons too. Such as routine servicing of one of the Skid Buses at Turnham Green or one of the experimental buses and the RM has gone along to bring the other driver back. Who knows....?

Avanti Class 807 no. 004 crosses Stour Valley Viaduct and the BCN as it threads its way out of Wolverhampton with 9P47, the 0716 London Euston to Blackpool North. Work is underway to replace lock gates on the BCN below.

Parked up at Chiswick Works on Saturday 7 February 1982 are RMC 1477 that forty years on would be seen in preservation wearing Green Line livery and Skid Bus RT 1530 newly repainted and forty years on is in preservation. No such long term future for RMC 1470 as a close encounter with the wall of the Training School building the following year put paid to any prospect of surviving into preservation. Several parts from it were rescued for use in the restoration of RCL 2229 for the LT Museum so perhaps some of RMC 1470 is still with us!

Launching my new website

It always begins with the idea to find silence and serenity in myself when I spend time in nature and feel its authenticity. For me it’s not only about getting the perfect picture or an animal or a bird, but more about capturing the uniquely intense mood or feeling that I only experience in wild nature.

With this in mind I have curated some of my photos as a website linked here and in the comment. Do visit and let me know your thoughts.

I thank you all for your patronage, likes, faves, comments and advice. It would not have been possible without the encouragement I have received in your groups and the entire community.

I have taken the liberty of adding this photo to some of my favorite groups. If the admins feel this is inappropriate to the group please feel free to remove it.

RM 1377 leaving Chiswick Works on 1 March 1979. I would guess that with the trainee driver being in full uniform, this is actually a conductor being put through the driving school. New entrants to the Training School would usually have three weeks tuition culminating in taking the final test on a Thursday.

The following day would involve reporting to Chiswick in the morning for the final paperwork session and a visit to the Uniform Store to be kitted out. Thereafter travelling to their allocated garage to commence route learning which, if a `one route` garage could be achieved by the end of the day ready for their first trip in service on Monday. Or, in times of staff shortage, a weekend rest day working.

As I had been a Conductor at Mortlake, my arrival there on the Friday having passed my test the day before gave me an instant opportunity to take on the second half of an otherwise cut middle turn on the 9`s. I would imagine that very few newly qualified drivers went out on a service trip that quick! I can still recall the excitement of getting into RM 1582 which arrived so late due to traffic conditions that the expectation of reaching Aldwych on that first trip was curtailed to Hyde Park Corner!

BL 2 at Chiswick Works on 7 February 1982. Personally, i quite liked the appearance and styling of the typical ECW body used on BL`s in London and LH`s just about everywhere else. A few years ago I went into a Travel Shop in St. Helier, Jersey, and was amazed to find that the entire front end lower half of an ECW LH/BL had been adapted as part of the reception desk!

Tampa's Armature Works sits along the Hillsborough River, where the Riverwalk now extends in a constantly evolving area. It is what I can only dub a high end food court, where a variety of high quality establishments ply their trade in this retro, re-imagined building.
