Walking in Spring makes me wonder if nature is as excited to come out as we are after a long Winter. GET OUTSIDE!
The stump of the last cypress tree that was removed a couple weeks ago. I was smart this time and had Evan wear his rainboots so he wouldn't get wood shavings all over his regular shoes.
This is an all-cherry freestanding stair that I built in Austin in a place called Applehead Island. The panels had to be cut and welded into place. All the balcony skirts are bookmatched.
The main stair was built on site after I had constructed the parts at the shop. It is actually an ingenious system for building a free-standing stair. A man named Keith (who ran the Austin operation for a while) actually created the system after he and I had labored over the old way, which was building a 2x4 frame, bending the stringer around and adding the treads and risers.
In the new method we screwed the stringer into the treads and risers and constructed it from the ground up. When it was all screwed together *then* we bent and glued the main stringer.
This job took about a month, and was very fun. We fished often off of the dock in the morning. The house across the street had it's own helipad and the guy would get in his helicopter and fly to work each morning... no kidding.
A gorgeous young blonde was visiting her grandfather (from England) and would come and sit with me each day for lunch. It's nice sometimes to have someone around to break the monotony and she was pleasant company.
Anyway, this is probably one of the finest (traditional) jobs I've ever done. Every joint is flawless, the cap was done so the grain matched (using long, continuous runs of cherry). Then the owner went and put a CARPET RUNNER on the damn main stair!!! I wanted to KILL her! But, she had grandkids, so whaddya gonna do?

One of my favorites from the photowalk, this is the main engineer on the train. He was quite a showman, and loved the crowd. Lots of fun.

Hier sehen sie den Porsche 356 B 2000 GS Carrera GTL Abarth, bei dem der 1,6-Liter-Motor auf zwei Liter Hubraum aufgebohrt wurde und so rund 99 kW / 135 PS leistet.
Neben dem Antrieb spielte natürlich auch Carlo Abarths Expertise eine wichtige Rolle bei den Erfolgen des in die Jahre gekommen Sportwagens (immerhin wurde der Porsche 356 seit 1948 gebaut).
Allerdings hat diese Rennversion fast nichts mehr mit dem ursprünglichen Fahrzeug gemein. Der österreichisch-italienische Leichtbau-Experte schmiss alles aus dem Auto, was in den Verdacht stand, Gewicht zu verursachen:
Die Dämmung flog raus (deswegen wandelt man immer am Hörsturz, wenn man den 356er Abarth ausdreht), im Cockpit befindet sich nur das Nötigste und die Insassen zwängen sich in einfache Plastik-Sitzschalen.
Die Hülle besteht aus Aluminium und wurde von Hand bei den Karosseriespezialisten von Zagato zusammengebaut.
Also wiegt der Porsche 356 B 2000 GS Carrera GTL nur noch 778 Kilogramm, war damit circa 120 Kilogramm leichter als der Normalo-Carrera und bis zu 220 km/h schnell. Die Abmessungen unterscheiden sich ebenfalls deutlich: Der Abart 356er ist 13 Zentimeter niedriger und kürzer sowie zwölf Zentimeter schmaler.
Die Zweiliter-Version triumphierte 1961 bei der legendären Targa Florio und holte Klassensiege in Le Mans sowie die Europa-Bergmeisterschaften 1960 und 1961.
So strahlend die Siege des Porsche 356 B 2000 GS Carrera GTL Abarth auch heute noch klingen, die Geburt dieses legendären Sportwagens war von heftigen Wehen begleitet.
Zunächst ging alles ganz reibungslos: Während der IAA 1959 trafen sich Ferry Porsche und sein Chef-Ingenieur Klaus von Rücker im Hotel "Frankfurter Hof", um mit Carlo Abarth die Zusammenarbeit zu besiegeln. Der gebürtige Wiener hatte damals schon einen exzellenten Ruf, wenn es darum ging, Automobilen ein paar Extra-Vitamine zu verpassen. Eigentlich war der Tuner auf Fiat und Simca spezialisiert, nahm den Auftrag aus Zuffenhausen jedoch freudestrahlend an.
Karl Abarth (so sein Geburtsname) war es gewohnt, autokratisch zu agieren und tat seine Meinung bisweilen auch lautstark kund. Es entwickelte sich eine Geschäftsposse mit Eifersüchteleien und Lieferproblemen. Aus der Hochzeit in Hessen wurde schnell eine Seifenoper voller Eifersüchteleien und Kompetenzgerangel, die auch als Skript für eine Vorabendserie herhalten könnte. Dennoch wurden 21 Modelle des Leichtbau-Renners gebaut, der sich seinen Platz in der Porsche-Walhalla verdiente.

Here's me, all ready to go in the utilidor. I was squinting cause it
was SO SUNNY (but so cold, danggit) and who needs to smile if you've
got a respirator over your mouth!? Luckily no cockroaches made it
into my tyvek suit...
I took a job in Rochester Hills this past weekend. It was fun working with high school kids instead of families for a change. The girls were all really nice. Overall it went well. Thanks Savanah!
