"Books can take you into wonderful worlds"

My first idea for the "Smile on Saturday" theme "One Word" (22.02.2020).

Unfortunately, I didn't consider that the book titles also have words ...

An early morning PHOtage with spring in the air!

And every word I didn't say that caught up in some busy day

And every dance on the kitchen floor we didn't have before

And every sunset that we'll miss I'll wrap them all up in a kiss

And pick you up in all of this when I sail away.

We were all lined up watching as the day faded.. not a word was spoken.

I get a spam email every now and then and the word today was "Gallimaufry"

it means "A hodgepodge, mishmash, or medley"

Example in a sentence: "I enjoy a gallimaufry of activities and hobbies rather than just one specific thing."

Covers of forgotten 1940s genre crime novels with titles like' This Man is Death', 'Daughters of Shame’ and, shown here, from my own collection, 'Don’t Scare Easy' are bringing unexpected high prices at auction. A collection valued around £4,000 fetched £26,829 recently.

Mainly published by the Kaye brothers - Bernard & Alfred - between 1949 and 1954, the books were judged obscene at the Old Bailey - the Kayes were jailed and two of their authors heavily fined.

Leonard Percy Gard, the artist responsible for many of these lurid covers was acquitted when he proved he did them before the books were even written.

Gard drew for Hank Jansen - one of the genre’s most famous authors - this was a pseudonym for Steve Francis and almost certainly Ace Capelli.

Called wall-to-wall sleaze’ and ‘a cross between the superb and the crass’, the covers are still evocative of this post-war style - though readers might be disappointed to find that the stuff inside is tamer than Mills & Boon now.

The local Northern Hawk Owl evidently has trained the local photographers well. And if you look closely you can even see the owl!

There are few more enchanting places than the boardwalk along the citadel in Quebec City. There are few buildings that I have ever seen with the charm of the Chateau Frontenac. It is known as the most photographed hotel in the world...and hopefully you can see why here. We were blessed with wonderful light after a thunderstorm that made for a magical scene.

A fridge magnet showing the stone arch bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The bridge was originally built in the 15th century by the Turks. It was destroyed in 1993 during the Bosnian civil war, then later rebuilt, following the original plans. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

World War I Memorial at Brightlingsea 03 July 2021 - grade II listed.

The following is from the Historic England.

Name: Brightlingsea War Memorial

Designation Type: Listing

Grade: II

List UID: 1426590

Summary

War memorial: cenotaph and cruciform paths; First World War with additions for Second World War; unveiled in 1921; designed by Richard Reginald Goulden, sculptor; cenotaph constructed of white granite with bronze plaques; stone paved paths.

Reasons for Designation

The War Memorial in Brightlingsea, Essex is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Design: the monumental design of the memorial at Brightlingsea, by the noted sculptor Richard Reginald Goulden, has considerable impact, enhanced by the cruciform paths that form part of the design.

* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20.

History

The War memorial in Brightlingsea was unveiled in 1921, at a ceremony attended by Brigadier General F W Towsey. It was designed by Richard Reginald Goulden (1876-1932), who had himself served with the Royal Engineers in the First World War. In 1916 he was wounded, and returned to England, where he served in Brightlingsea and London for the remainder of the war. Goulden specialised in public sculpture, particularly memorials, several of which are listed. An early photograph shows the Brightlingsea memorial sited at the crossing of paths within a small, wedge-shaped garden, surrounded by roads and defined by a newly planted hedge. The hedge has since been replaced by a low wall, and bench seats have been added either side of the entrance to the west. The memorial was rededicated in May 1993.

Details

War memorial; First World War, with additions for Second World War; unveiled in 1921; designed by Richard Reginald Goulden, sculptor and constructed of white granite with bronze plaques.

The memorial consists of a cenotaph, a massive rectangular block of granite, stepped out at the base, set at the crossing of stone paved cruciform paths. Towards the top of the broad west and east faces of the cenotaph are rectangular bronze plaques, each with a relief design representing the heads of three servicemen in profile. On the north and south sides are tall narrow bronze plaques, surmounted by wreaths, on which are inscribed the names of those who died; an additional small plaque carries the names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War. At the top of the east and west faces is a raised carved inscription which reads: IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE /THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR. As the cruciform paths approach the cenotaph they are stepped gradually, rising to its base. The setting for the whole is a small, wedge shaped garden; other structures that form part of the garden, its surrounding wall, gates, and benches, are not listed, which is shown on the map.

These two orchids are from the Cypripedium genus of the Paphiopedilum subfamily. More information is below.

Lady's slipper orchids (also known as lady slipper orchids or slipper orchids) are orchids in the subfamily Cypripedioideae, which comprises the genera Cypripedium, Mexipedium, Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium and Selenipedium. They are characterised by the slipper-shaped pouches (modified labellums) of the flowers – the pouch traps insects so they are forced to climb up past the staminode, behind which they collect or deposit pollinia, thus fertilizing the flower.

Cypripedium is a genus of 58 species and nothospecies of hardy orchids; it is one of five genera that together compose the subfamily of lady's slipper orchids (Cypripedioideae). They are widespread across much of the Northern Hemisphere, including most of Europe (one species), Russia, China, Central Asia, Canada the United States, Mexico, and Central America. They are most commonly known as slipper orchids or lady's slipper orchids; other common names include moccasin flower, camel's foot, squirrel foot, steeple cap, Venus' shoes, and whippoorwill shoe. An abbreviation used in trade journals is "Cyp." The word "Cypripedium" is derived from the Late Latin: Cypris, from Ancient Greek: Κυπρις (Kypris), an early reference in Greek myth to Aphrodite, and Greek: pedilon, meaning "sandal".

I wanted to share both another shot from the new 100-400L II from Canon and also something that I thought was a very cool abstract. I was out on the ice, and saw this "edge" where crystalline shapes like needles were forming. I composed for a yin/yang effect and then cooled the white balance to give it an intensely polar look (which, trust me, was appropriate!) Finally, I've given it a bit of a Kodachrome finish in AS7, along with "bokeh vignette" to focus the eye (so don't read anything into this about corner sharpness - the lens is amazingly sharp!) My review of it will be coming soon!
