I wanted to share both another shot from the new 100-400L II from Canon and also something that I thought was a very cool abstract. I was out on the ice, and saw this "edge" where crystalline shapes like needles were forming. I composed for a yin/yang effect and then cooled the white balance to give it an intensely polar look (which, trust me, was appropriate!) Finally, I've given it a bit of a Kodachrome finish in AS7, along with "bokeh vignette" to focus the eye (so don't read anything into this about corner sharpness - the lens is amazingly sharp!) My review of it will be coming soon!

Here's another moody portrait from my session with Jay. I've done a little heavier processing here, layering in some texture and crushing the blacks to allow some critical details to emerge from the shadow. The end result is one that I personally like. I'm releasing a video that analyzes the sharpness the of the new Canon EF 70-300 IS II USM lens as some reports were that it really wasn't much of an improvement over the previous generation. If you are considering this lens, I think you will enjoy this episode: bit.ly/70300Sharp

Happy December 25...

Another idea stimulated by a Dingbats Word Puzzle.

Each word that falleth from thy lips,

Is like a seed that lieth long;

Then sprouts within my spirit's deeps,

And buds and blossoms forth in song.

Thanks for looking.

Geinspireerd geraakt door de mooie foto's die Sicco Dierdorp rond Zwolle heeft gemaakt (bezoek ook vooral zijn foto's eens), werd onderweg naar een middagafspraak in Groningen door mijzelf enkele foto's gemaakt. Deze combinatie rijdt enkel in de piekuren en zal in de nabije toekomst worden vervangen door nieuwe enkeldeks treinen met een kortere lengte.

Dusty: I thought Pascal was supposed to cover the Word Nerd prompt!

Ginger: She is our resident Word Nerd -- asleep on the job.

Jefa: Have a heart, guys. She was up all night working on her novel. Looks like she might have been looking for nerd in the Rodale's. And there we find her, between neologism and nerve.

Ginger: Is nerd a neologism then?

Jefa: Yeah, it goes back to the 50's at least in a Dr Seuss book. I've had this book for nearly 40 years and it's not here, but it isn't a dictionary. Nerdism is gaining a whole new respect these days. I'm proud to be one.

Though the new Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 OS | Sport has "Sport" in the name, expect it to make its way into the hands of a lot of wedding, event, and portrait photographers. It's a little bigger and heavier than competitors, but the 70-200 Sport packs a lot of optical punch. This is a natural light winter portrait of my daughter. My processing here is motly reserved to cooling the environment while preserving some warmth in the skintones. We'll call photography a "winter sport" here (though if it helps, I was on snowshoes to break trail for my portrait subject). You can see more images from the Sigma here: bit.ly/70_200SportIG

This is my first attempt, really funny photography technique :)

My word for 2017 is 'capture'....a word that stretches and bends in context. It is a noun, an active verb, and an adjective (with a 'd' added). It is our daily photo focus- 'capture your day', and my deep longing to 'capture the moment'. This card is perfect! Maybe I won't 'see it all', but I will try to capture the moments of 2017 in words, lines, color, and photos.. #cy365 day2of365 'word'

The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM is a compact, pro-grade telephoto zoom for Canon's full frame mirrorless (R) cameras. Canon has completely reimagined this zoom range for the first time, and there are pros and cons to that change. One one hand, the lens is compact, much lighter, has great autofocus, and can produce beautiful images. On the other, it cannot be used with teleconverters, isn't really an optical improvement, and and costs significantly more. For a full rundown on how those two realities collide in the RF 702-00L, check out my review coverage here:

Nigel word search & JKPP drawing

Part of Jill's birthday present to me was this print of one of our Mercedes Ambulances made up from words that Jill had chosen to reflect something about me, my character, my likes etc..

Very clever indeed and as you move further away from it the more the shape/form of the ambulance takes over.

Jill used the website below to get/do the picture..

This image celebrates and laments. There is no season that I enjoy capturing more than autumn. I spend what free time I have out wandering...and wondering at the beauty. But as the season progresses, and the trees become increasingly bare, there is a bit of melancholy that comes with it. Vanishing beauty, vanishing life, soon to be swallowed by winter's cold sleep. I have processed these walkers so that they too are vanishing... P.S. Canon's new tiny full frame pancake lens is a bit of wonder itself - very sharp wide open...and is also sharp across the frame. Not bad!
