Wool Exchange, Bradford, West Yorkshire
Built in 1864-67 by the significant local firm of Lockwood & Mawson to serve Bradford's woollen cloth manufacturing industry, which was the biggest in the world. They saw off competition from William Burges and Norman Shaw for the commission. Pevsner thought it 'the central symbol of 19th Century commercial Bradford'. It closed for business in 1964, and has since been successfully converted for commercial use, including the central hall which is now a Waterstones bookshop.
