The earliest works on American medicinal plants included witch hazel, primarily noting its use to treat eye inflammations, hemorrhoids, bites, stings and skin sores, diarrhea and dysentery, and many other conditions for which a plant high in tannins would produce relief by virtue of its astringency. Herbalists consider it one of the best plant medicines to check bleeding, both internally and externally. A tea made from the bark or leaves is given to stop internal bleeding. A poultice of the fresh leaves or bark was considered useful for relieving the pain and swelling of inflammations. Dipped in a cotton ball, witch hazel water is dabbed on insect bites to calm pain and relieve itching. I find it especially soothing on chigger and tick bites, as well as mosquito bites, and poison ivy rash.

You can make your own witch hazel preparation - a tincture retaining the herb's properties - by soaking the bark in alcohol. This is different from the witch hazel water offered in pharmacies. It is closer akin to the witch hazel extracts available in Europe. Gather a few dormant winter branches, scrape off the bark, then soak in twice its weight of dilute grain (ethyl) alcohol (containing 50 percent distilled water) for about two weeks. Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol will work too, provided you clearly label the bottle "for external use only," Shake or stir the tincture once or twice daily. When ready, strain, bottle, and store in a cool dark place. Before use, dilute this tincture with at least two parts distilled water. Undiluted, this tincture may be too harsh for sensitive skin. With the exception of eye ailments, this concoction is useful for most applications calling for witch hazel. You might find it especially useful for relieving the itching and oozing of poison ivy rash. Or, you can go to any store where over-the-counter (non prescription) drugs are sold and buy some witch hazel water.

Album – Babenhausen, Hesse, Germany – 2018SEP07-08:

Mother went this time last year to Babenhausen to visit the Blachniks, whom our family has known 58 years, and we were planning for her to go over again stand-by on the flight I was working this weekend. It began to fill and I was unable to swap trips: if my scheduled flight had no empty passenger seats, I could not carry my mother over the ocean on that day, so Joe agreed to accompany her the day before and I would work the next day to Frankfurt, then ride the crew bus to Mainz, take the train to Babenhausen, visit Mother and the Blachniks, and pick Joe up. He and I would take the train to Mainz, and he would ride back with me while I worked the flight to Charlotte.

And we did! So Mother is in Babenhausen, Joe & I in Charlotte. Next we need her return trip back to the States.

As my vacation is starting, I plan to fly back stand-by, see the Blachniks, Mother, and maybe her host family in Babenhausen a few days while I stay at a hotel, then take Mother by train to Mainz she wants to see, and fly stand-by again; after landing in Charlotte she will overnight with her sister Marie Robinson in Gastonia, to break up the drive back to her home in Brevard.
