Wisconsin River Informal Mussel Survey
My family owns land along the Wisconsin River Southwest of Sauk City. I try to do an informal mussel survey every summer. All mussels are returned to the water unharmed. Here is what I found this year:
Wabash pigtoe (Fusconaia flava)- 53
Plain pocketbook (Lampsilis cardium)- 3
Threehorn wartyback (Obliquaria reflexa)- 3
Pimpleback (Quadrula pustulosa)- 3
Threeridge (Amblema plicata)- 2
Pistolgrip (Tritogonia verrucosa)- 1
Not as exciting as other years where other rare species were seen. Also good in that no zebra mussels were detected.
All my boating friends respect the danger of cold water. Yes, she IS wearing her life jacket underneath that sweatshirt.
