Wisconsin Rapids city park, one of the most beautiful parks in Wisconsin, on the Wisconsin River. Wisconsin Highways 54 and 13 use the bridge. I drove 1 hr 45 min. to the racetrack, so I might as well drive another 15 minutes to eat at an AWESOME park! Unedited.

Wisconsin River Informal Mussel Survey

My family owns land along the Wisconsin River Southwest of Sauk City. I try to do an informal mussel survey every summer. All mussels are returned to the water unharmed. Here is what I found this year:

Wabash pigtoe (Fusconaia flava)- 53

Plain pocketbook (Lampsilis cardium)- 3

Threehorn wartyback (Obliquaria reflexa)- 3

Pimpleback (Quadrula pustulosa)- 3

Threeridge (Amblema plicata)- 2

Pistolgrip (Tritogonia verrucosa)- 1

Not as exciting as other years where other rare species were seen. Also good in that no zebra mussels were detected.

Diligently cleared by land steward Mike Degen, the goal being to make the landscape as it was when Frank Lloyd Wright was here. Habitat for rare plants and likely reptiles. Iowa County WI, June 2014.

Sometimes the vegetation on both sides reaches out and touches you.

Yesterday I went up to visit my Dad in Sauk City. Before I even got to the bridge over the Wisconsin river I could see the thick fog bank. As I crossed the bridge the river was concealed by a heavy blanket of fog but the Shore lines were perfectly clear. Evidence however suggested perhaps the fog had receded as the trees were all blanketed in a thick frost.

I was not really sure how to get the most out of these photos. Perhaps I should have tried to take some multiple exposure shots, but alas I did not. These are the ones I thought was the best representation of the day.

Last week was once again time for our annual adventure with our 8 year old grandson. These trips are always a great time for all of us. This years adventure was a short 3 day trip into Wisconsin. We decided that we would only travel the byways and stay off the divide roads as much as possible. This set is the first leg of the trip as we travel along the Wisconsin river in search of Eagle Cave. In addition to the great family time this is my time to explore further out of my home territory. Enjoy the scenic rural shots of county roads and hills and corn and trees and more trees and farmsteads wedged between the road and hills and trees.

Staphylea trifolia, Southwest of Sauk City, Sauk County Wisconsin, 15 May 2018.

Taken at Sauk City, Wisconsin - the eagle wintering grounds on the Wisconsin River - in bitter cold weather. With the temperatures below zero and the river temperature at 30Ë™ F, huge clouds of steam were rising from the water's surface and ice crystals were forming on the nearby tree branches. A single bald eagle swooped downstream and landed in this tree across the river from me.

I increased the exposure of the dark photo, added a little saturation, and cropped tightly. This is the result - a very different look, but it seems to fit the mood of the time. Looks like a painting to me.
