10 inches of snow covering Tennessee farm land with a newly constructed cabin overlooking it all...definitely a Winter Wonderland!

In 2013, as I was working through my 365 Project, this was the first time that I was in a position to take a photograph every single day and I immediately found it more difficult than it sounds. On days 6 through 10, which would be the first full week of the year that I would have gone back to work, I was struggling to get pics on days where I worked all day and it was dark (or close to it) when I got off and headed home. So...the next few pics will be taken from other days in January when I was able to photograph more places and/or things...like this great morning in Winter when everything is frozen/frosted over and the sun just begins to peak over the mountain horizon...beautiful time for having a camera!!

This photo was taken in 2013 during my previous Project 365…please visit my album for this “REMASTERED” Project 365 as I revisit each day of 2013 for additional photos to share!!

Day 114/365

The one thing I absolutely adore about the cold, is how cool your breath looks in the air. I especially love it when the horses breathe out - it's just incredibly beautiful. So before I started training Tigerlily (the horse in this picture) I tried capturing her breath!

While resizing this for uploading, I accidentally added black borders - but since doing it, I decided to leave them, for a change! :)

Our first real snow fall this season.

Taken at work early this morning.

Prescott, AZ

December 12, 2022

Parsonsfield, Maine.

Panorama:

The day ended no better than it started with cold and gusty winds and a reminder that it's still very much winter here in Maine.

West Pond, Parsonnsfield, Maine.

Ice formations abound.

Everywhere I look there is some form of ice because of the heavy rain we had last Friday into Saturday, springs that we usually only see running in the spring are flowing now and of course the water is freezing since the temperature has again dropped below freezing.

West Pond, Parsonsfield, Maine.

Panorama view of a windy and cold 23°F February sky today on West Pond.

Cornish, Maine.

Our frigid temperatures have kept the ice from last weeks ice storm on the trees even though the sun has been shining brightly, it's been below freezing now for over a week, this morning it was -13 below zero and only warmed up to 7.F today and we have another very cold night ahead.

The view of foggy West Pond and Dearborn Mountain from the sun porch this afternoon, we had light rain and fog throughout the day and the fog was getting thicker as

the afternoon wore on, temps today reached a high of 51°F and as of 8:30 P.M. it's still a mild 47.5°F with heavy fog and drizzle.

That's what they call it. It descended upon our fair city yesterday....around noon.

Winds kicked up to around 40kph and snow was blowing sideways ...from the north...

It got so bad I couldn't even see this house eventually.. just across the street.

They had to close the main highways and major arteries several times throughout the day due to 5 and 6 car pileups... visibility, of course, was only a few metres.... I would have found an alternate route home or stayed put for the hour if I had been driving.

Then, we had to go out and shovel... and by that time the temperature had dropped to -21 C ... with a whipping wind.

Today it is still -21C... the high today will be -19C.. and, the next 3 or 4 days will be -25C to -29C.... .....

Loaded Key Train CSX K650-17 (Chicago,IL/CN-Montgomery,AL) blast south through the south-end of Patty (MP C-344.7 SE Patty) on the CSX Etowah Sub. Patty is a storage track and the starting point of the Calhoun Branch which turn west for Calhoun, TN. The Etowah Sub is a sad example of the dwindling of coal traffic over the last three decades while in the heart of the CSX Coal Network the sub normally sees the bare minimal of freight traffic now compared to its glory days, which seem to give the company the opportunity to run these key train like K650 quietly through the subdivision.

Panorama view of West Pond from the second floor today just after sunset.

We had lots of clouds so any decent sunset photos was not to be had, shot this pano from the second floor of our house looking out over the pond.

It warmed up and rained quite hard at times over night into this morning, the 5/8 inch of rain we got took all of the snow off the pond again leaving only bare ice.

The temperature got up to a tropical 53°F today, pretty warm after the very cold weather we've seen over the past three weeks.

The weather this fall and winter so far has been swinging wildly and the rest of this winter is probably going to be just as wild.

High water levels in the Hollandse IJssel bring the river dangerously close to this riverside house. The rising water almost reaches the doorstep, illustrating the vulnerability of low-lying areas in the Netherlands during periods of extreme weather and river flooding.

West Pond, Parsonsfield, Maine.

The last week was very cold here on West Pond and the ice has finally covered the entire pond.

The temperature got up to 33.F today so I ventured out for a few photos mid afternoon.

Parsonsfield, Maine.

We had yet another nasty spate of sleet and freezing rain then snow, then more freezing rain and more snow starting last night and lasting through today.

Roads where very bad with packed ice and lots of slush, driving was a nightmare and there where many slide offs and accidents.

Day 348 of 365

We are currently under a winter storm watch here in Maryland. They are predicting a wintery mix and have even called for ice pellets. Accumulation could be anywhere from 3" to nothing. Of course that doesn't matter to the average Baltimorean. Even the hint of snow or ice in the forecast throws the average Baltimoreon into a tizzy and they hit the grocery stores in force. By the end of the night preceding the winter event there is hardly a gallon of milk, toilet paper or bread to be found.

I've never understood this behavior. I've lived most of my life and all of my adult life and I can't recall a time when my very survival was threatened due to a lack of any of those three products. I mentioned this behavior before in my photos, but having experienced it again today I just had to mention it again. It is a behavior I have never understood and I don't think I ever will.

I mentioned above that I've lived here most of my life and all of my adult life. In all those years I don't think I have ever heard a forecast that included "ice pellets." What is an ice pellet? How is it different than hail or frozen rain or sleet. All I can think of when I hear that term is icy precipitation that looks like rabbit droppings. I guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to see what exactly an ice pellet really is.

No !

It's a lady Sparrow all puffed up for the winter weather ... ☺

Seen through my living room window at 1:08 PM today.

West Pond, Parsonsfield, Maine.

It was a cold and windy day here on West Pond today.

The kind of cold and wind that make you want to stay inside by the fire sipping a hot coffee.

The kind of day when the wind shakes the house as it comes in gust.

Spring is close at hand but today was more wintry as snow showers and sunlight fought it out for dominance.

Parsonsfield, Maine.

We had these amazing Altocumulus or Cirrocumulus clouds (not sure which they where) but they where over us for a short while today before blending into a large mass of gray.

West Pond, Parsonsfield, Maine.

Our dark skies started clearing late in the afternoon as the sun was setting but the temperature dropped like a rock, it was only 14°F when I shot this photo, it's going to be the coldest night we have seen so far this winter for sure.

A beautiful red barn located on the former farm of W. Clyde & Marie Hyder. Mr. Hyder, a former animal sciences professor, was Professor Emeritus of Tennessee Tech and the W. Clyde Hyder / Tommy Burks Agriculture Pavilion (a multipurpose facility consisting of 3.5 acres under one roof and operated by the School of Agriculture at Tennessee Tech University) was named for him. He received the title of Outstanding University Alumnus as well as Outstanding Agriculture Alumnus after his retirement.

This photograph was taken last week after during the winter storm that passed through Middle Tennessee. The contrast of the amazing red barn with all the white snow makes a great scene...

It looks as if I had taken the picture in the dead of winter, right? In fact, I have seen this winter scene one morning in April 1998 in Boulder, USA. At that time I visited my daughter who was there for an au pair year.

Looking through my old negatives I found this winter image and some others which I made with my Minolta SLR and just scan. It is certainly one photo or another which I will share with you ;-).

I wish you a happy Advent and Christmas season!
