Australian Heritage Week Warrnambool - Churches Walk Palm Sunday 17 April 2011.
St Joseph's: Until 1849 there was no permanent place of worship for Catholics in Warrnambool.
Initially a small wooden building erected on the corner of Kelp and Timor Streets served as the Church for the Catholics of Warrnambool. Dean Thomas Slattery, the first Parish Priest of Warrnambool, came to live permanently in the city in 1853.
In 1856 the foundation stone of the present parish hall on the corner of Kepler Street and Raglan Parade was laid by Bishop Goold from Melbourne. The building was used as a school and Church for the increasing Catholic community of Warrnambool.
This is now the Church Hall and is a simple bluestone church designed by Dowden & Ross in the idiom of A W N Pugin and built in 1856, of interest for its facade with bellcote and flanking windows with simple bar tracery.
By 1867 it was becoming apparent that this building was also too small for the congregation and plans for a new Church were made. The Church was built in two stages and the present St Joseph's was finally completed on the 23rd September 1889.
The church as a large bluestone to the design of William Wardell (whose drawings survive, although claims have been made for a local designer, Samuel Parker). It was completed in 1886- 9 with the addition of the western bays of the nave and the tower and spire to the design of W B Tappin, of Tappin Gilbert & Dennehy.
The building is of interest for its commanding broach spire, large traceried windows and unbroken roof ridge. The interior contains notable stained glass by Ferguson & Urie, together with communion rails and gates designed by Wardell..
The three-manual organ of 34 stops, divided in the rear gallery, was built in 1892 by Fincham & Hobday and is the second largest example of its builders' work to survive relatively unaltered.
In 2002 a Gathering Space was built on to the Church. This Gathering Space has certainly complemented parish life.
