St. Govan lived his life as a hermit in a cliffside cave in Wales, and those willing to make the steep hike can still visit his mystical hermitage by the sea.
The history of St. Govan is murky at best. It’s believed he was an Irish abbott living in the 6th century, though other more fanciful stories describe him as a thief. Some even believe that “Govan” is a mutation of “Gawain,” a legendary knight from the court of King Arthur who was said to have receded into hermitic life in his final years.
Whoever he was, Govan was en route to Wales when he was attacked by Irish pirates off the coast. Govan ran to the cliffside, where the rock allegedly morphed into a secret cave for him to hide in. After his pursuers left, Govan decided to remain in the cave as thanks to God and to the cliffside that saved him. He set up a monastic hermitage in the cove, living off the nature surrounding, and remained there for the rest of his life.
In the century following, the cove became an important site of worship known as St. Govan’s Head. The spring which the saint took his water from was said to cure ailments of the limbs and eyes. Sometime in the 13th or 14th century a small stone chapel was erected on the site. It still stands there today, measuring roughly 20 feet by 12 feet, containing nothing but a bench and a small altar, which Govan (or perhaps Gawain?) is said to be buried beneath. Nearby is a well which took from the miraculous spring, now dry, which people still cast wishes upon.
A two-year-old boy, when he noticed that I wanted to take his picture, momentarily stops playing and poses eagerly as his much older playmates continue their "touching run" game on a small vacant lot at a village in Subic, Zambales, Philippines.
When you're out shooting on the street, most people either ignore you, act indifferent, or obviously don't want you taking their photo. But every once in a while there's someone who really, really wants their picture taken...
Paddy .. locked into target (which happened to be his mum ,, not a sheep).
A characteristic of the border collie is the herding eye. It’s been said that “when working, this breed will usually be seen in the crouched position, with their alert eyes fixed on the job in hand. The ‘hypnotic’ eye characteristic is probably more defined in the Border Collie than any other breed and it is this quality which makes them so superb in herding sheep, using their eyes to guide a herd without the need to nip or bark.”
And that “most people admire a dog that works with its head low to the ground, with its hindquarters high and its tail tucked between its hind legs. They can run as fast as the wind, yet stop in an instant or switch directions without stopping. They don’t take their eyes off their sheep. Their intense gaze is focused on the stock, willing them to obey, to go where the dog directs them, to stop if the dog blocks their path. The stock aren’t rushed or afraid, but they certainly respect the dog. A good Border Collie’s obsession is its livestock, and this is as it should be.”
What I am actually saying is that we need to be willing to let our intuition guide us, and then be willing to follow that guidance directly and fearlessly.

If I could give one thing,
something,
if I could trade, I would lace my fingers or offer my open, upturned palms.
If I could trade something for that sound in your voice that I could never describe, it would be this: willingness.
It would be protection.
I would catch up your sound, everything it holds because it says so much, that almost reluctant but reverent, vulnerable peace;
that not quite tortured longing that is more like how it feels to finally slip between clean bedsheets than to be teased or taunted...
I would catch it up in a jar:
not to keep it. Oh, my love, I would never keep you unless you choose to stay, my small, nimble fingers would unscrew the lid at the softest sound of your sigh. But I would catch it to protect it from the world-
not because you are not the strongest thing I have ever seen, but because you are such a gift to me
and the very atmosphere that
you should never be fussed
or encroached upon,
unless it is the weight of me, pressing and retreating.
I'll be oh, so careful.
Since I cannot invite you to place your hands on such a thing, instead, I will meet your sound, something I imagine you have ever only shared with me,
as lovers string delicate, beautiful delusions for themselves.
I will meet it in kind. I offer,
I offer you the slightest space between my knees and this floor;
the warm flush between my pressed wrists,
the space between my lips and...
Forgive me this little promise, I know you will, this whisper, this gift, that no one else has ever seen.
Let me be willing,
as you are,
as we long to be.

Filip is NOT the shy Dachshund like little Oskar in the previous shot. This little character is willing to play 100% of the time and doesnt have a mean bone in his body. He really only doesnt like the UPS man and a Boston Terrier that lives down the street.
This is another new species for my prairie wildlife species set, though less than a willing model. The bullhead was captured in the pond by a diamondback water snake and taken to shore for consumption.
of first days lay down in front of us. the silver willow through the open streched in through the open window - willingly with gentle branches. a bird sang it's song of light and pleasure to us
.. who fear to lift .. who are so silent and tense about days when we thought we were save, together ..
A boat carrying numerous people very willing to get soaked on a hot day negotiates right up to the base of one of the estimated 275 falls which make up Iguazu Falls. January in Argentina is mid summer, and the temperature in the park was in the high 90's when we were there. Iguazu is part of a National Park system in both Argentina and Brazil, and is relatively isolated, as opposed to Niagara which is in a more urban setting.
Iguazu Falls was voted one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World in 2011, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has the greatest annual water flow of all the waterfalls in the world, is three times as wide as Niagara and 30% higher. It was the setting for the 1986 movie, "The Mission."

I drive by this hotel everyday on my way downtown to work and had always wanted to shoot at these doors, but it's a pretty sketchy hotey so you never really wanna go down there and hang out at night by yourself with a really expensive camera. Ya know?
The other day andrea had done a shot like this...and I swear I initially noticed these doors like this because of lauralani so this is a tribute shot to both of those awesome photographers who have rocked the 365ness to another level. Serious artists they both are and if you haven't checked out their streams, get on it!
I love and I hate communication. It seems like it is an essential tool, but when you are me and you say what you think you are trying to say in the wrong words, it just sucks. I like to think I am a great communicator, and even an okay listener...maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. But I am willing to admit that, and learn another way to do things. I'm open to change, ya know? Sometimes I guess I hear what I wanna hear instead of what's being said, I know that much. That is at times a useful skill like when you're at work in yet another training session or in class and it's just one more lecture...but other times when you are supposed to be a sounding board for someone you care about and then you just get too selfish and stop listening. Eeek, no good! I'm working on it tho!
Good night? Good morning? It's way too late for trying to be philisophically inspirational on flickr ;)
A little update;
For those of you who are going 'wow, great focus, wow, what a lens....' and for those of you who want to see a 'before and after' version of this shot, out of the camera and after processing.....

I wanted to post all of the mind-set and workflow as it helps for you guys and gals to know that it's not just about 'boy, i want that lens' or always getting 100% of it right on-site. It's also about knowing you have the best raw materials and knowing when to call it a night and walk away, safe in the knowledge you have 'enough'.
Thanks for all your comments. Much appreciated. Always spurs me on to more creativity. :-)
I am making a little time to go back over stuff I've shot in the past few months and get it online and in my portfolio. Sometimes it's hard to spend so much time doing this. Once the job is finished, it's on to the next one....
This was from a shoot I did with a couple from Hong Kong, who were in Tokyo for a trip around the time of their wedding. Lovely couple and we had a lot of fun travelling around various spots in town shooting photos.
It's something I get a fair few enquiries for a year, the pre-wedding photographs in Tokyo. Always good fun to get out on the streets and shoot with two willing models, especially when one has a wedding dress tucked up underneath her tracksuit... ready to whip out whenever necessary! :-)

As we head up the road, the canyon opens a bit. Here is a shot that's not far up the old South St. Vrain Road from wildflower cliffs. This road side barn may not be brand new but is well kept. Egad, is this a stable genius willing to stay stabled, unlike some I can recall? We shot until he and his buddy, a jackass, came out to greet us. Really, which was which? Again, I distracted these four wheelers while eDDie got his chosen shots. As is works out, this nag was a really old sway-backed horse. At least Fox News won't have to shoot live footage of his demise, or perp walk, unlike other stable geniuses.
I'm making another trek with eDDie into the Rockies and snagging another load of shots on that mellow day extending my stash of unedited snaps on my hard disk. I keep snapping more. This is another up the road to the Peak to Peak Highway. The morning is creeping over the hills and announcing its presence. We better head up the hills before they head east. This is bold play of bright morning sky causing inky, heavy shadows. This continues my scenes switch over.
We were up old South St. Vrain road from Lyons below the quarry ruins that blight the canyon that the county allowed to propagate... and will again next time. Never an end to getting shivved bt industry and paying behind them. eDDie was busy shooting wild flowers next to the road and I am otherwise entirely distracted as usual, shooting what I discover. These are the cliffs that buttress the old road. The water is at my back, on the north of the road where I am standing.
