The Best of Cablegate: Instances Where Public Discourse Benefited from the Leaks by Rainey Reitman

Description of event

"Since its release of about 2000 diplomatic cables (as of January 7th, 2011), Wikileaks has been subject to extraordinary pressures, seemingly at the behest of the US government. Amazon and EveryDNS have denied Wikileaks internet service and Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, and Bank of America have been prevented supporters from donating money to Wikileaks. This is despite the fact that Wikileaks has not even been charged with a crime.
Unfortunately, the situation has gotten even worse. The press has been spreading lies about Wikileaks. Mainstream media outlets do not appear to be doing even the most rudimentary fact-checking. The most blatant of these lies is the idea that Wikileaks has “indiscriminately dumped 250,000 cables on the internet”. This is flat-out false.
A few news organizations, including NPR and InformationWeek, have corrected this mistake, and NPR has even offered an apology. By contrast, most news organizations ranging from the AP to the Wall Street Journal continue to print this falsehood.
We call upon all news organizations to correct previous articles and statements, to issue apologies to their readers, and to take steps to prevent this mistake from occurring in any future articles and shows.
We will be protesting outside the TransAmerica pyramid, across from a San Francisco office of the New York Times, on Saturday, January 15th, at 4pm. On that day, we will be joining in protesting against the repression of Wikileaks with many others around the world, including Washington, DC, and several cities in Canada and Australia.
To counter the New York Times’s censorship of reality, we plan to publish the released cables on the walls of their building. In addition, participants will be provided cable printouts and markers and encouraged to throw down their artistic abilities by adding a graphic representation of their favorite cable to the Cablegate Coloring Book.

Here's the series of images for Day 10.
He was absolutely hogg tied and handcuffed here's his legs. Many conspiracies and many truths actually came from what julian Assange did in the way of setting up a conduit for whistleblowers to go to and basically show and tell. Some think he's a traitor, rapist and a criminal. Some people think he's a force for good and that he has provided a unique way for many people to blow the lid on corrupt politicians and corruption in general and that what we have been seeing is nothing more than revenge. Is he squeaky clean or is he just another pawn in a bigger game. WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange's bail hearing, 14.12.2010
I know this is definitely old news as Assange is now out on bail and is holed up in the countryside on mansion-arrest with an electronic tag, but I still wanted to post my own personal record of the day, as a large, international Press scrum and a group of enthusiastic WikiLeaks supporters gathered outside Westminster Magistrates' Court whilst Assange's fate was decided inside.
As we know, he was granted bail, but was sent back to prison because the Crown Prosecution Service objected and lodged their intention to appeal this decision. Bizarrely, they seem to have told a bit of a huge fib to Mark Stephens - Assange's lawyer - by telling him that the Swedish Prosecutor was the party objecting to bail, when it turns out it was the CPP all along!
Two days later their objection was tossed out by a judge at the Crown Court.
In the meanwhile, the American Government continues to behave stereotypically, and is now trying to twist and contort US law to find a plausible excuse for demanding that the bootlicking British Government hand Assange over to them so they can show him first hand how right he was to expose their lies, corruption and iniquities to the public view.

What's the impact of Wikileaks in the way ethics, politics and international policy are done? I guess that the outcomes are yet to be seen, meanwhile a lot of activism backing Assange's initiative is taking place all over the world, and several Wikileaks sprouts are to become the offspring of what freedom of speech and radical transparency will become on the future...

In June 2016, the storm of hacked emails, released by WikiLeaks, hit the US elections. The diffusion and the suspicion that the Democratic National Committee – the governing body of the Democratic Party – had favored the primary candidate Hilary Clinton led to the resignation of its president, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Has Russia been really the deus ex machina of the operation, as stated by the joint report of the CIA, NSA and FBI? Who is Guccifer 2.0, the so-called Romanian hacker who claimed responsibility for the hacking? Did Wikileaks effectively deliver a piece of the White House to Donald Trump, working in only one direction to damage the Democratic Party, or has it lived up to its ideals?

Crowd jubilant as Ecuador grants Julian Assange political asylum - 16.08.2012
A large crowd of supporters of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and US soldier Bradley Manning descended on the Ecuador embassy on 16.08.2012 to wait for news of a decision by the Ecuadorean government on Assange's application for political asylum.
At 1:30pm word came through embassy oficials that the government in Quito had granted asylum to Assange on humanitarian grounds. Despite cheering and applause from the crowd, it was widely accepted that Assange's problems are far from over, and this might just be a pyrrhic victory.

On February 19, 2014, at the Oxford Union, the Sam Adams Associates, a group of retired US officials dedicated to honoring Integrity in Intelligence, gave the 2014 Sam Adams Award to Chelsea Manning (formerly Bradley Manning). This is Chelsea's old friend Aaron Kirkhouse, who received the award, reading out a statement prepared by Chelsea for the occasion.
Pfc. Manning was given a 35-year sentence in August for the largest ever leak of classified documents -- including the Afghan and Iraq war logs, a treasure trove of diplomatic cables, and the classified military files from Guantánamo, on which I worked as a media partner -- to WikiLeaks.

EGYPT: Muslim Brotherhood Looks Beyond Tahrir
CAIRO, Dec 1, 2011 (IPS) - Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood came under fire from various political quarters for its decision to stay out of last week's clashes in and around Cairo's Tahrir Square. But as Egyptians vote in the country's first post-Mubarak parliamentary polls, many local analysts believe the controversial decision may have ended up paying political dividends.
1,000 days in prison without trial: protesters gathered around the world on February 23, 2013 against the ongoing persecution of the accused Wikileaks whistleblower behind exposing war crimes, torture, and other abuses by the US military.
