The Best of Cablegate: Instances Where Public Discourse Benefited from the Leaks by Rainey Reitman

Description of event

"Since its release of about 2000 diplomatic cables (as of January 7th, 2011), Wikileaks has been subject to extraordinary pressures, seemingly at the behest of the US government. Amazon and EveryDNS have denied Wikileaks internet service and Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, and Bank of America have been prevented supporters from donating money to Wikileaks. This is despite the fact that Wikileaks has not even been charged with a crime.
Unfortunately, the situation has gotten even worse. The press has been spreading lies about Wikileaks. Mainstream media outlets do not appear to be doing even the most rudimentary fact-checking. The most blatant of these lies is the idea that Wikileaks has “indiscriminately dumped 250,000 cables on the internet”. This is flat-out false.
A few news organizations, including NPR and InformationWeek, have corrected this mistake, and NPR has even offered an apology. By contrast, most news organizations ranging from the AP to the Wall Street Journal continue to print this falsehood.
We call upon all news organizations to correct previous articles and statements, to issue apologies to their readers, and to take steps to prevent this mistake from occurring in any future articles and shows.
We will be protesting outside the TransAmerica pyramid, across from a San Francisco office of the New York Times, on Saturday, January 15th, at 4pm. On that day, we will be joining in protesting against the repression of Wikileaks with many others around the world, including Washington, DC, and several cities in Canada and Australia.
To counter the New York Times’s censorship of reality, we plan to publish the released cables on the walls of their building. In addition, participants will be provided cable printouts and markers and encouraged to throw down their artistic abilities by adding a graphic representation of their favorite cable to the Cablegate Coloring Book.

Wikileaks revealed that John Key told the media he had an invitation to the White House when he didn't. Facing embarrassment he begged the US Embassy for an invite.
Wadah Khanfar the 44 year old Director General of the Al Jazeera Network has been forced to stepped down as the head of the organization, after Wikileaks released a diplomatic cable showing he collaborated with the U.S. government. The cable stated Khanfar had agreed to remove detrimental images from the network’s online slideshow. Contrary to Al Jazeera’s reputation that Khanfar had built, taking the single channel news to a multi-national network that countered the US newsgathering hegemony, the cable implied Khanfar had systematically worked closely with the US intelligence. The images removed from the online slideshow depicted injured women and children resulting from US military actions. Khanfar’s replacement is Sheikh Ahmad bin Jassim bin Mohammad Al Thani, a member of the Qatari royal family, seen as a move by the establishment to control the growing Network’s power.

Whistle blower Bradley Manning & Wikileaks supporters rallied at the United States Marine Corps officer recruiting center yesterday in Berkeley California in solidarity with several rallies nationwide and at Ft. Meade Maryland where the young soldier is the subject of a hearing that could have all his charges dismissed based on unlawful pretrial punishment he received at the Quantico Marine Brig facility for nearly 10 months after his arrest.
At the November 27, 2012 hearing the Quantico base commander Col. Daniel Choike revealed in testimony that the military barred or delayed independent analyses of PFC Bradley Manning’s abusive confinement, claiming that Bradley’s defense could “exploit” such a review in the press, and instead sought reviews that would confirm and justify the military’s handling of the young private.
Col. Choike also revealed, near the day’s end, that he didn’t believe from the start that Bradley should have been kept at Quantico. The Marine brig, which had recently been in transition from a post-trial to a pre-trial confinement facility, was meant for short-term detention. Government lawyers told Col. Choike early on that they expected Bradley’s trial to last nearly two years, and Col. Choike told his superiors that he didn’t think Quantico was adequately resourced to hold Bradley for that long, and that Bradley shouldn’t be held there for more than 90 days at most. The military ignored Col. Choike’s qualms, clearly to Bradley’s detriment.
The Berkeley rally was followed by an action that took Shattuck street for several minutes and protesters faced off with police at Shattuck and Addison until a dispersal order was given. No arrests were made.
The hearing is scheduled to last until Sunday and Manning's court martial is set to start on February 4th of 2013.
Crowd jubilant as Ecuador grants Julian Assange political asylum - 16.08.2012
A large crowd of supporters of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and US soldier Bradley Manning descended on the Ecuador embassy on 16.08.2012 to wait for news of a decision by the Ecuadorean government on Assange's application for political asylum.
At 1:30pm word came through embassy oficials that the government in Quito had granted asylum to Assange on humanitarian grounds. Despite cheering and applause from the crowd, it was widely accepted that Assange's problems are far from over, and this might just be a pyrrhic victory.

Public meeting in support of WikiLeaks and Julian Assange - London, 07/02/2011
As WikiLeaks' editor-in-chief Julian Assange fights against legal attempts this week by the Swedish prosecutor to have him extradited to Sweden from where there is a very real fear by many that he will be illegally 'rendered' to the United States where there have been many open, public calls by politicians and pundits for him to be executed or even just murdered on the street without trial, there was a public meeting in support of Assange and WikiLeaks organised by the Stop The War Coalition.
In front of a packed audience of 300 enthusiastic supporters in London's Conway Hall, the speakers were peace activist Jemima Khan, convenor of Stop The War Lindsey German , president of Stop The War Tony Benn and veteran peace activist and historian Tariq Ali, all of whom had attended Assange's first trial day at Belmarsh Magistrate's Court. Assange's legal proceedings have been moved to Belmarsh specifically to make it much more difficult and inconvenient for his supporters to gather and protest.

Julian Assange's supporters at Ecuador Embassy. London, 21.06.2012
Wikileaks press spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson and personal friend and surety bond-provider Sarah Saunders made staements this afternoon outside the Ecuador embassy in Hans Crescent to explain that Julian Assange is well and in good spirits as he remains inside the embassy awaiting news of his application for political asylum.
A group of supporters from the Bradley Manning campaign group Friends of Bradley Manning (UK) also arrived to begin a vigil in support of Assange. Members of hacktivist group Anonymous also attended.

WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange's bail hearing, 14.12.2010
I know this is definitely old news as Assange is now out on bail and is holed up in the countryside on mansion-arrest with an electronic tag, but I still wanted to post my own personal record of the day, as a large, international Press scrum and a group of enthusiastic WikiLeaks supporters gathered outside Westminster Magistrates' Court whilst Assange's fate was decided inside.
As we know, he was granted bail, but was sent back to prison because the Crown Prosecution Service objected and lodged their intention to appeal this decision. Bizarrely, they seem to have told a bit of a huge fib to Mark Stephens - Assange's lawyer - by telling him that the Swedish Prosecutor was the party objecting to bail, when it turns out it was the CPP all along!
Two days later their objection was tossed out by a judge at the Crown Court.
In the meanwhile, the American Government continues to behave stereotypically, and is now trying to twist and contort US law to find a plausible excuse for demanding that the bootlicking British Government hand Assange over to them so they can show him first hand how right he was to expose their lies, corruption and iniquities to the public view.

Fort Meade, Maryland, Saturday afternoon June 1, 2013. Human rights activists from the Bradley Manning Support Group, Veterans For Peace, Code Pink and many other groups marched east on Rt. 175 ("Desolation Row") from Reece Gate to Llwewllynn Avenue for a rally and "Speak Out" in support of Army Private Bradley Manning, whose court martial for releasing classified material to Wikileaks was to commence on June 3. Speakers included Eathan McCord, Dan Choi, Sarah Shourd, Ann Wright and Daniel Ellsberg. My crowd size guesstimate is around 750. Interactions between the absurdly numerous and over-armed police and the activists were generally respectful and peaceful.
On Thursday June 19, 2014, I photographed this campaigner holding a placard put together by the campaigning group Justice for Assange - based on slogans used for the Olympic Games in London in 2012 - at a vigil to mark the 2nd anniversary of Julian Assange, WikiLeaks' founder and editor-in-chief, entering the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to seek political asylum, fearing that he would end up being extradited to the US from Sweden, where he is accused of sexual offences (claims which he denies). His asylum claim was accepted on August 16, 2012.
WikiLeaks' work, exposing US crimes through documents released by Bradley (now Chelsea) Manning, has, of course, been enormously influential, and I am pleased to have worked with WikiLeaks as a media partner on the release of the classified military files from Guantánamo in April 2011.

Something very different from the usual posting. Just thought you might like to know. Or even if you don't want to know, maybe you should ...
If you have heard of Diego Garcia, do you know it's history? The Chagos islands were part of Mauritius until 1965 and in the years that followed the people living there were expelled forcibly to make the way clear to build an American military base called Diego Garcia.
The story of the people from Chagos is a very sad one ... and it was presented by John Pilger in an award winning documentary made in 2004 called Stealing a Nation. That 56 minute documentary can be seen on the net and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in history, mauritius, or social justice
I found it here:
and here:
www.blatantworld.com/documentary/stealing_a_nation_uk_tre...
The Chagossians have fought for both the right to return to the islands and compensation through the courts. Mauritius still claims sovereignty over the area. But the American and British position seems to be that the islands will only be returned when they are no longer required for American security purposes.
Last year the area around the islands was declared a marine reserve by the UK and US governments, thus becoming the largest marine reserve in the world. Wikileaks has now confirmed that the UK and USA made this reserve to ensure that the Chagossians would not be able to return to their homes.

By coincidence these leaks have come at the same time as a visit from Princess Anne. She has not met with a warm welcome.

Today, the 3rd November 2010 has been declared by the Government of Mauritius “a special day of commemoration of the deportation of the Chagossian community” in recognition of the latter’s endurance. This was decided by the Cabinet on 29th October 2010.

"We call on you to stop the crackdown on WikiLeaks and its partners immediately. We urge you to respect democratic principles and laws of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. If Wikileaks and the journalists it works with have violated any laws they should be pursued in the courts with due process. They should not be subjected to an extra-judicial campaign of intimidation.

A small group of protesters stood outside of the Raleigh State Capitol demanding that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange be freed.
White House doesn't like Wikileaks.
What Bullshit!
There wouldn't be a problem if the USA wasn't all up in the business of people around the world, infiltrating, spying, interfering, intervening, stopping people from making their lives better.
The USA is the world's greatest aggressor.
The USA is the world's greatest oppressor.
News stories like this are confirmation.
Wikilieaks is a good thing. It shows what horrible activities the gov't is up to.
If the government wants to avoid this, it should STOP committing and enabling the commission of crimes!
