We visited the Cumbres & Toltec historical railyard in Chama and were hoping to catch the Miky Way over the "coal tipple". But no luck for us that evening. The lights from the town and the general rail yard illumination plus lingering clouds made it very difficult to see the galaxy in the sky. I was amazed at how much light pollution a small town like Chama can throw into the night sky. They are certainly not skimping on street lights and the railyard is doing its part.
That said, it provided ample illumination for the earthly subjects. So I opted to base processing the shot on an earlier version taken during the late blue hour. We did light paint but I ended up using hardly any of those frames.
After the police stopped to inquire what we were doing and told us to be careful, because they were after a machete-wielding guy, we decided it was time to leave the wild west.
Two hours. Just two hours separated me from the awe-inspiring French Glacier at the heart of Torres del Paine National Park. The air crackled with anticipation – not just from the crisp Patagonian wind, but from the booming echoes that reverberated through the French Valley.
Ahead, a plume of snow dust danced in the distance, a silent testament to the power the glaciers wielded. It was a scene both exhilarating and humbling – a constant reminder of the raw, untamed beauty surrounding me.
Towering over it all stood the majestic Cerro Paine Grande. Its icy crown, at a staggering 2,884 meters (9,462 feet) high, pierced the azure sky. Lush beech forests carpeted the valley floor, their vibrant greens a stark contrast to the glacial whites and blues beyond.
The French Valley, however, held a secret. The weather here was notoriously fickle. A thick mist could descend in mere moments, transforming the breathtaking vista into a whiteout, the path ahead disappearing like a dream.
As I pressed on, the mystery of the valley's name deepened.
The First Settlers with a Gallic Flair:
The late 1800s saw a gold rush of a different sort in the Ultima Esperanza province. Not for minerals, mind you, but for wide-open spaces and a fresh start. Europeans like Germans, English, and Spaniards flooded in, staking their claims near the inviting (name-wise, at least) Last Hope Fjord.
But by the time the later settlers showed up, those prime fjord-front lots were about as available as a happy ending in a zombie movie. Left with the scenic leftovers - the big lakes and rugged valleys by the Paine Mountains - they weren't exactly rolling in clover. Among these scrappy souls was a French fellow named Adrian Bader.
Bader wasn't one to be discouraged by a lack of fjord views. He set up camp on the north shore of Nordenskjold Lake, right at the foot of the majestic Cuernos del Paine and the head of a surprisingly lush valley. It wasn't long before everyone around started calling him "The French Man." And guess what? The valley he settled in? Yep, you guessed it - French Valley, Glacier and River! Seemed even settling for leftovers could have a certain je ne sais quoi.
I wonder how they are faring? The homeless./junkie camp has grown below the nest (with some strange stories about a guy wielding a machete), so I'm avoiding that area of the woods again.

Huron Central Railway’s train from Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury trundles past a farm at Bar River, Ont., on the forlorn Webbwood Subdivision. The highland cattle seem more interested in checking out the camera-wielding stranger than the passing freight to the Big Nickel.

This very large curlew wields a remarkable scimitar-like bill, used to extract invertebrates from deep burrows. Typically found in small to mid-sized groups on expansive mudflats. Similar to Eurasian Curlew, but Far Eastern is far more warmly colored, with a light brown (not white) rump and heavily marked underwings, unlike the unmarked white underwings of Eurasian. Calls similar to Eurasian but deeper in tone. (eBird)

We were fortunate to see these endangered curlews a few times around the northern end of Australia. Pictured here with a Terek Sandpiper (orange legs) and a Grey-tailed Tattler (yellow legs), showing how much bigger this bird is to the more common Tattlers. The Terek Sandpiper was a one-off find.

The first time I came to Yogya many years ago I wandered into the shanty town along the Kali Code. Later people told me that had been a dangerous thing to do although I didn't feel uncomfortable at all and the people seemed friendly enough, even sharing some fruit with me. But it was indeed a less than fortunate neighborhood although I saw no lurking knife wielders.
Today I was surprised how colorful things had become. I'm told the houses have been painted and repaired a bit. Apparently, it is said, to attract tourism. Whether that ploy has worked I don't know. But the effect for Rex was quite pretty... And my grey and drab memories became brightly overlaid!
His skin is scar hardened. His eyes now narrowed from facing archers and wielding swords. Hard to believe he is really early 20s but then he is a survivor. He only knows how to fight, he has spent many years away from family and love. All that surrounds him is hatred and bitterness. Such is the life of a battle hardened soldier of any wars. If they survive but badly injured they carry the lifelong pain and suffering for what.......so sad.

A couple of shots from a now distant memory,of a warm Spring,just to remind me of one amazing day on the banks of the Hampshire Avon where ten of these stunning falcons criss-crossed their way up the river,past me,catching Mayflies (a sight in itself,if you have ever witnessed a Mayfly hatch,bank to bank,thousands in number.What Trout fly fishermen call "Duffers fortnight",if you can't catch on Dry fly when this is happening...give up !!!!).Frustrating and fantastic at the same time,wielding a 500mm f4 hand held whilst I missed shot after shot as these pocket rockets flew within feet of me !!! Hopefully I will get a chance next year,and ..maybe...I will be better prepared.

With what strangeness we sometimes occupy the silence.
It seems to us that there are ants in the chest and the anxiety moves into our hands.
However that emptiness wields petals of fire, lips and cathedrals filling the clerestories with joy and light.
That silence, lord of shadow and thought, travels in a flash busy and deep corridors, and uncovers a cinerary of silver laughter on the silver back of the waves.
Also delivers in your other hand the mud that blinded the annihilated room in the demolition of arms and mothers.
Ah, silence, reclined in your universe .I deposit the traveler's indulgence that listens to the pulse of the days, like water bursts over a clepsydra.

Yes indeed just after the shutter click those clouds opened up good and proper, and continued to do so for almost the whole way back home - a very wet 10k on foot. Yes - yes I know Mr Magoo drives a car in the cartoons but I’m not a cartoon and haven’t driven for 30 years, and how the heck does he find his car is what I want to know??? Some sort of metal detector might do it I suppose but a lot can go wrong with that scenario, and how does he know it is his car and not one belonging to some axe wielding whacko whose cheese has slid totally off his cracker? Mind you, I might not be a cartoon but life can be cartoon like at times…..my wife and I were dining out once when some outraged stranger accused me of trying to steal his pudding, kid you not, I accidentally put my hand in his pudding, right in there, up to the wrist almost and somehow I am stealing it - seriously!?! It wasn’t my fault, I had no idea it was there, it shouldn’t have been where it was it really shouldn’t, but stealing it - honestly, can you imagine?? Ooh ooh look, that gooey thing all covered in custard looks delicious, I think I’ll just grab me a handful and hope he doesn’t notice!! An accident and accused of thievery. What could I do - I lamely held up my white stick and pointed at it with a custard covered finger. The cheek of the fellow - I should have sued him for burns!So there you have it, there’s a reason why I don’t drive and have to get wet - and if I want a pudding I’ll buy my own……..

Rio Grande SD40T-2 No. 5411 leads an 84-car Salt Lake City to Helper coal train through Utah's Spanish Fork Canyon approaching Narrows on Oct. 8, 1994. The engineer is holding a system timetable, which he tossed out the window for me to enjoy as a gift. In my humble opinion, Rio Grande guys were and continue to be the BEST.
It's the muti-armed tentacle wielding fighting tree again, this time from a different angle but a tighter crop. Just love the bestial wrath this tree emanates!
It’s not kind. The greed, the wielding of power to hurt and deceive others, survival of the fittest. Beauty is there, but she doesn’t really belong.
Hiking among mountains, hills, waterfalls, and rivers always reminds me of the magic of the world. It may not be quite the same magic as a fire wielding mage in epic fantasy, but it makes it easy to imagine that world of high magic.

A bit of an odd post for me, since it's just a weapon. However, you can expect to see the owner of this legendary hammer rather soon.
The hammer itself is simple, and not meant as much more than a side to the actual MOC. Feel free to glance right past this one.
For those curious, მითოსური is pronounced mit’osuri. It's Georgian for "Mythical."

It is only in looking at it again that I realise that the woman is wielding a tennis racket. It is odd that a painting about Philosophy in the University of Karl Popper should wield a tennis racket. What is it I do not know? Is it a backhanded reference to Popper?
When I originally planned my picture, I had a different idea in mind but when I saw Vin's outfit, it inspired a whole new picture and here we are: a badass magic-wielding rogue you don't want to meet around the corner!
I want to point out the aura effects circling around Vin. It is one of my favorites by The Deadboy: "Evil Spirit Aura."

The idea of a "shadow government," a clandestine network wielding real power behind the scenes, is a recurring theme in conspiracy theories. In the yard on a dying ash tree- emerald ash borer, the stared at each other from opposite sides of the tree.
The larger of two look alikes, the Hairy Woodpecker is a small but powerful bird that forages along trunks and main branches of large trees. It wields a much longer bill than the Downy.
Downy's bills are small , almost thorn-like.

As in Hairy Woodpecker on a very cold day. Even colder temperatures in the forecast. A small Downy Woodpecker pecked at nearby suet.

The giant changes the proportions of our universe. He can become a figure of the artist, an allegory of knowledge, or a metaphor for superhumanity.
A group of workers who thrive on hard work and who flourish when together have stormed this construction site for several moons. These men and women are put to work in a highly acrobatic way to finalize this titanic undertaking and give life to this scrap metal giant. Together, they work with perseverance, authenticity, passion, conviction, stubbornness and resilience. The heart, the apparent focus of emotional turmoil, becomes the allegorical representation of the creative drive. Inspired by the intuitive movement of Les Automatistes, we offer a show that celebrates creativity in its most instinctive and visceral form. A metaphor invoking the power that collectivity can wield. A praise of the greater than self, these giants exist because we create them, because we make them live.

Le cœur, foyer apparent des ébranlements émotionnels, devient la représentation allégorique de la pulsion créative. S’inspirant du mouvement intuitif des Automatiste, nous proposons une œuvre qui célèbre la créativité dans sa forme la plus instinctive et viscérale. Métaphore invoquant la puissance que peut exercer la collectivité. Louange du plus grand que soi, ces géants existent par ce que nous les créons, parce que nous les faisons vivre.
Warrior Angels in their natural form resemble well-built men and woman dressed in the armor typical of ancient heroes, and wielding a spear and type of sword associated with an long-gone empire. They often wear helmets of similarly ancient design, and bear shields emblazoned with holy symbols. A Warrior Angel possesses a pair of great, eagle-like wings. The head of the Angel is constantly surrounded by a nimbus of golden light, which persists even if one wears a helmet. Warrior Angels will often assume human form, appearing as a noble Knight or Dame on a white horse.
Always loved Warrior Angels, their roles so various, their strength unmatched, and so very sexy. I want to be a Warrior Angel when I grow up! LOL
The NWS designating a marginal risk for severe activity across Northern Illinois wielded a temperature of 50 degrees, 30mph winds, and excessive rain. Standing out in it had me reflecting on my life choices to that point until I saw the headlight pop up on the horizon.
