Literal street photography.

Explored 3/16/16

We were confused by the various arrows on the signposts and walked in circles for a while. The younger ones never seemed to run out of energy though!

At a street corner in the Karmeliterviertel, which is a part of Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district of Vienna

60 000 Jews lived in Leopoldstadt before 1938, which was almost half of the district's whole population, today it's only 3 000. But at least the Karmeliterviertel is still (or again) a centre of Jewish Life.

The tawny owl is nocturnal so it is often heard calling at night, but much less often seen. They can be seen in the daytime but generally only if inadvertently disturbed from its roost site which is in woodland up against a tree trunk or among ivy. They eat small mammals and rodents, small birds, frogs, fish, insects and worms.

Cotehele Mill, which draws its water from the Morden Stream in the Tamar Valley (and was formerly known as Morden Mill), is part of the Cotehele Estate, which is owned by the National Trust. The Grade II-listed working mill, which produces wholemeal flour, dates back to the 18th century, though it was remodelled in the 19th century. There is believed to have been a watermill here since medieval times. In the 1860s the tenants, a family named Langsford, extended the mill by adding a sawmill on one side and a bakery on the other. A second water wheel was added to power the sawmill. The buildings surrounding the mill were used as stables, cowsheds, a hayloft and a ‘cherry house’ for storing cherries. The last of these buildings was added in the 1890s and they are now set up as a selection of estate and craft workshops.

On our dog walks, this is one of my happy places. We managed to get there this morning for our one exercise outing of the day (although this was taken a few weeks ago). I'm so glad I managed to get some eggs in a little shop on the way, first time in two and a half weeks! Being a family of veggies it's been a little worrying not to be able to get certain things. Stay safe and keep your distance x

----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)

16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)

Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

A typometer is a ruler which is usually divided in typographic points or ciceros on one of its sides and in centimeters or millimeters on the other, which was traditionally used in the graphic arts to inspect the measures of typographic materials. The most developed typometers could also measure the type size of a particular typeface, the leading of a text, the width of paragraph rules and other features of a printed text. This way, designers could study and reproduce the layout of a document.

One of the domains where the typometer was most widely used was the editorial offices of newspapers and magazines, where it was used along with other tools such as tracing paper and linen testers to define the layout of the pages of the publications, until the 1980s.

Typometers were initially made of wood or metal (in later times, of transparent plastic or acetate), and were produced in diverse shapes and sizes. Some of them presented several scales that were used to measure the properties of the text. Each scale corresponded with a type size or with a leading unit, if line blocks were divided by blank spaces. However, typometers could not be used to measure certain computer-generated type sizes, that could be set in fractions of points.

Due to the technological advancements in desktop publishing, that allow for a greater precision when setting the type size of texts, typometers have disappeared from most graphic design related professions. It keeps being used, even today, by traditional printers who still employ type metal. Source Wikipedia.

on the Berkeley campus, which is beautifully landscaped!

Just play with the light dissolve in the darkness in these flower & leaves images, which aim to create unique atmosphere and beauty, just like the spirit or fairy dancing in the dark. Hope you can feel that.

The idea was there, isolate a scots pine against the mountain, along the loch, but not quite like this. I had tramped off again from my workshop party who were based at the Beinn Eighe carpark at the bottom of the loch Maree. After about mile and half it was clear I was not going to get the POV down by the loch side I was after, so the next best thing to do was to head up the adjacent mountain side to see if I could get some foreground interest. I just had to find a clearing, as the mountain side was as cluttered as the loch side. After walking a bit further a likely spot came into view, so a climbed up through the bracken and swampy fell side and found my subjects. Ok it’s not one scots pine but five, clinging for life on a rocky mound above the swampy ground. Which one will claim the space, which one will survive, which will win? Every photo tells a story.

Trying to catch up my delay ... (which has become very big) ... but I need to post a new photo from time to time ...

Thank you in advance for all your faves and comments. I might answer several WEEKS/MONTHS later. And I might post several photos in the meantime.

To the left, to the right or into the tree? Best viewed large.

I watched this female Eastern Downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) circle around the River birch tree from bottom to this large fork. The tree sits just outside a window so I was able to shoot from inside. It took her about 10 minutes to traverse the 10 vertical feet (~3 meters) to this perch.

Continuing with the rediscovered memory card from last summer. I have been using iPhoto to process this and the previous two shots. I never really bothered with iPhoto before now but it is actually quite useful for doing quick edits. I'm quite impressed with it overall.

Bautzen is known for its mustard (Bautzener Senf), and for its prisons ("Gelbes Elend"), which were also used to stow away political enemies under Nazi, Russian and GDR regimes.

The forests around the Makarora area are simply spectacular. Beautiful deep green colours with clean streams of fast waters braking the otherwise uninterrupted silence.

It took me a good couple of hours to get this shot right. I had to take it from a suspended bridge which wasn't very stable. But it was definitely worth it.

Scopwick Beck, which runs through the village of Scopwick, North Kesteven, Lincolnshire.

Scopwick is small village and civil parish in the district of North Kesteven, situated 6 miles south from Lincoln. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 815. The parish includes Kirkby Green, a hamlet to the east of Scopwick. The village main road runs parallel to a narrow stream.

The village cemetery includes a War Graves site for airmen from RAF Coleby Grange and RAF Digby (originally RAF Scopwick), and includes that of the young Second World War poet and aviator John Gillespie Magee.

Part of the brick tower of Scopwick Tower Mill, which was built in 1827 and fell into disuse around 1912, remains standing.

It should be no suprise that the air quality here is mostly quite bad.

A "weed" which I prefer to call "wildflower" this lovely lilac Oxalis debilis grew in one of my potted plants, out of nowhere, like they all do ;) !

Masterpiece of Francesco Borromini.

The Church is also known as San Carlino owing to its small proportions

The oval entablature to the dome has a 'crown' of foliage and frames a view of deep set interlocking coffering of octagons, crosses and hexagons which diminish in size the higher they rise. Light floods in from windows in the lower dome that are hidden by the oval opening and from windows in the side of the lantern. In a hierarchical structuring of light, the illuminated lantern with its symbol of the Holy Trinity is the most brightly lit, the coffering of the dome is thrown into sharp and deep relief and light gradually filters downwards to the darker lower body of the church.

A little earlier in the trip the train had passed over part of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway route of 1825 which was opened exactly 200 years ago on the 27th September. Celebrations have been held over the weekend including a recreation of the first train over the route.

This section of the line however is a relative newcomer having opened in 1847 as far as Frosterley, eventually reaching Stanhope in 1862.

according to the Chronicle its construction was prophesied by #Mahinda himself, when #KingTissa erected a tall stone pillar on the place for future building.

The legendary hero #Duthagamani in fulfilment of the prophesy decided to build a Great Thupa

he wanted something bigger and better for his greatest work.

Another frame of this scene which I truly thought I'd never see.

Back when I was younger the Conway Scenic Railroad was a strictly seasonal operetion and would largely shut down during the winter months. In recent years however it has become a year round operation running trains to Conway all winter long and for the first time this winter running trains through Crawford Notch in the snow. Not wanting to miss out on the chance for some snowy winter shots along the old Mountain Sub I made the trip up on the long President's Day weekend to try for some snowy images.

Alas the Saturday trip featured just CSRR 255 solo with five cars meaning the return trip which is the better chase photographically would be long hood forward which just didn't interest me. Regardless, I did make the trip up through the Notch for a few signature shots such as this as she emerges from the deep rock cut at the Gateway at about MP 84.5 (as measured from Portland) on the old Maine Central Mountain Subdivision and comes up alongside Route 302 which had stayed at the bottom of the valley before climbing steeply. When they reach 1900 ft elevation at the summit of the line at Crawford Notch depot just a half mile ahead they will have climbed some 1400 ft in the 25 miles since leaving North Conway on a grade of up to 2.2%.

This unit is right at home here having been built in November 1966 for the Maine Central Railroad as part of an order of 13 of the model which were the first batch of second generation diesel locomotives purchased by the road. She came to Conway Scenic in 2022 and still wears her Vermont Rail System red paint from her nearly two decade second career as Clarendon & Pittsford 203 after having being sold by MEC successor Guilford Transportation in the early 1990s.
