The key to Wetheringsett church, Suffolk. Back in 2002 you had to ask a tiny old woman in a pink cottage to borrow it, if you wanted to look around the church - now (I am told) it is open all day. Good for visitors, less disruptive for the old lady, but sad for those of us that like to see and use big old keys!

Splendid place. So peaceful and yet it is a stones throw from the nightmare that is the dreaded evil A140.

Had to do this one as I wanted a picture of the grave with the skeleton holding an arrow! which I first saw on Simon Knotts magnificent Suffolkchurches site.

This church has a big opening on the face of the tower, I think it was once a door for a really tall person! maybe.

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no studio name that was posted on Thursday the 18th. June 1914; the location of posting is unfortunately not legible.

The card was posted to:

Miss L. Baker,

The Rectory,

Wetheringsett,

Near Stowmarket,

Suffolk.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Dear L,

Just a Post Card to you as

I think it is my turn to write.

This is a photo of the Rectory.

I went for a ride on Tuesday

nearly to Yardley, then Connie

went as far as Stoke.

Hope you are well as it leaves

me the same,

Hope to hear from you soon,

With love from Emily.

I don't know when I shall be

coming".

There are clues in the message as to the very approximate location of the rectory in the photograph; if anyone recognises it, please leave a note.

The Bai Lang Rebellion

So what else happened on the day that Emily posted the card?

Well, on the 18th. June 1914, the rebel bandit leader Bai Lang, the "White Wolf" of China, was reported to have massacred over 10,000 inhabitants in the town of Taochau south of Lanzhou one day after escaping federal soldiers. This was according to a telegraph report from local missionaries that was sent to the Chinese government.

The Collapse of a Railway Bridge in Scotland

Also on that day, a railway bridge collapsed at Carrbridge in Scotland following a torrential thunderstorm that killed five people.

E. G. Marshall

The 18th. June 1914 also marked the birth in Owatonna, Minnesota of E. G. Marshall, American actor, best known for his role as 'Juror Number 4' in the film 12 Angry Men.

He also appeared in the television medical dramas The Defenders and The Bold Ones: The New Doctors.

Marshall died in 1998.

Swaffham Bulbeck Man Dead.

The sad tidings have reach Swaffham Bulbeck of the death Lance-Corpl. Henry George Butler, of the North Staffords, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Butler, of this village. He joined the Army in October, 1914, and rejoined his old regiment on the memorable August Bank Holiday of 1914. On two occasions he has been home on leave. About seven weeks ago he was severely wounded in the head, and was taken base hospital at Boulogne.

After a critical operation, some hopes were entertained of his recovery. His brother, Charles Butler, visited him at the hospital, and, although speechless, the wounded man recognised his brother, and made signs for him to take a flashlight which he had carried on the battlefield, and which had been pierced by a bullet. It is gratifying to the bereaved parents and others to hear how splendidly the work of the hospital is carried on, and how devotedly the doctors and nurses work for the alleviation of the suffering and the wounded.

Lance-Corpl. Butler passed away on the 25th June, and was buried in the cemetery near the hospital, where many of our brave soldiers have been laid to rest, having so nobly given their lives for their country.
