A grand late medieval church in a quiet village not far from the A140. The Perpendicular windows and the walls of glass of the clerestory fill it full of light.

Simpson tomb in the St. Mary Magdalene church in Debenham, Suffolk.

This is the tomb of John Simpson (died 1697), erected by his friend reverend John Sheppard of Wetheringsett. He was an apothecary who bequeathed farms and land in Debenham and Framlingham, the income from which provided 42 wheaten loaves every Sunday for the poor also coats of light grey cloth for 8 poor men and gowns for 6 poor women on Christmas Day each year.

Nice misericord. This is the underside of the seat. Misericord, from the Latin 'misericordus', meaning mercy-giver, because during long periods of standing the singers could lean back on them and feel rested.

The key to Wetheringsett church, Suffolk. Back in 2002 you had to ask a tiny old woman in a pink cottage to borrow it, if you wanted to look around the church - now (I am told) it is open all day. Good for visitors, less disruptive for the old lady, but sad for those of us that like to see and use big old keys!

Splendid place. So peaceful and yet it is a stones throw from the nightmare that is the dreaded evil A140.

Had to do this one as I wanted a picture of the grave with the skeleton holding an arrow! which I first saw on Simon Knotts magnificent Suffolkchurches site.

This church has a big opening on the face of the tower, I think it was once a door for a really tall person! maybe.

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no studio name that was posted on Thursday the 18th. June 1914; the location of posting is unfortunately not legible.

The card was posted to:

Miss L. Baker,

The Rectory,

Wetheringsett,

Near Stowmarket,

Suffolk.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Dear L,

Just a Post Card to you as

I think it is my turn to write.

This is a photo of the Rectory.

I went for a ride on Tuesday

nearly to Yardley, then Connie

went as far as Stoke.

Hope you are well as it leaves

me the same,

Hope to hear from you soon,

With love from Emily.

I don't know when I shall be

coming".

There are clues in the message as to the very approximate location of the rectory in the photograph; if anyone recognises it, please leave a note.

The Bai Lang Rebellion

So what else happened on the day that Emily posted the card?

Well, on the 18th. June 1914, the rebel bandit leader Bai Lang, the "White Wolf" of China, was reported to have massacred over 10,000 inhabitants in the town of Taochau south of Lanzhou one day after escaping federal soldiers. This was according to a telegraph report from local missionaries that was sent to the Chinese government.

The Collapse of a Railway Bridge in Scotland

Also on that day, a railway bridge collapsed at Carrbridge in Scotland following a torrential thunderstorm that killed five people.

E. G. Marshall

The 18th. June 1914 also marked the birth in Owatonna, Minnesota of E. G. Marshall, American actor, best known for his role as 'Juror Number 4' in the film 12 Angry Men.

He also appeared in the television medical dramas The Defenders and The Bold Ones: The New Doctors.

Marshall died in 1998.
