Happy Spring!

A gigantic double natural jute hanger for two big happy plants.

Shown here with two 9" diameter pots, ideally the top section will look best with 8-9" and the bottom would look best with a 10-11" pot.

Hanging from a custom made 6" steel "S" hook, it will rust slightly if used outdoors where it will get rained on. (I recommend spraying the jute with Scotchguard or Vectra furniture spray if using outside to reduce weathering)

Six rows of heavy knotting- swirly, twisting half-knot sinnets, with 12 spring green wood beads, and green jute accents at the top, middle & bottom.

This one took about three hours to make.

The 2017 event marks the 90th anniversary of the first festival and the 105th anniversary of Japan's tree gift

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration in Washington, D.C. commemorating the March 27, 1912 gift of Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City Japan to the city of Washington

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is known as the Nation’s Greatest Springtime Celebration!

National Park Service NPS predicted peak bloom March 19th thru 22nd 2017

Photos were taken while the cherry blossom trees were in the sixth of six stages of blooming called Peak Bloom which happened on March 25th 2017

* Approximately half of the Yoshino blossoms were lost due to a late frost that occurred March 14-16, 2017

Puffy white and peak bloom are defined as when 70% of the surviving blossoms reach those stages

Average peak bloom date is April 4th

Extraordinary warm or cool temperatures have resulted in peak bloom as early as March 15 (1990) and as late as April 18 (1958)

Origins of the cherry trees in DC:

Viscountess Chinda was the wife of the Japanese ambassador. She and Mrs. Taft planted the first two cherry trees at the Tidal Basin March 27th 1912

The ceremony of planting these trees grew into the National Cherry Blossom Festival

This special part of history is celebrated through many events and is also commemorated with a large, bronze plaque at the site of the first planting

Also of importance is Dr. David Fairchild, a prominent botanist who planted the first cherry trees in D.C.

WASHINGTON DC history

Washington, D.C. formally the District of Columbia is the capital of the United States of America since July 16, 1790

The state of Maryland donated land to create what is now known as Washington, D.C.

Virginia had also donated land which was returned to Virgina in 1846

Washington, D.C. is not in a state but there is a movement for statehood which would have the name of the 51st state as New Columbia

The United States of America declared independance from Great Britain in 1776

Japanese Ambassador Kenichiro Sasae said at a press conference on March 02, 2017 "I don't need to say, 'Make this cherry blossom festival great again,' because it's already great."

The Canadian Tulip Festival / Festival Canadien des Tulipes in Ottawa the capital city of Canada

The Canadian Tulip Festival began after the Second World War, when Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs as a token of friendship in 1945.

Canada had provided asylum for the Dutch royal family during the war and played a strong role in the Netherlands’ liberation. While the royal family sought refuge in Ottawa, Princess Juliana gave birth to Princess Margriet on January 19th 1943 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The Canadian government temporarily declared the room “Dutch soil,” to ensure that the Princess would remain in line for the throne.

The Netherlands continues to give Ottawa 20,000 tulip bulbs every year.

Ottawa’s first Canadian Tulip Festival took place in May 1953 and opened with an inauguration ceremony at Parliament Hill.

The Canadian Tulip Festival has grown into the largest annual display of tulips in North America.

The Canadian Tulip Festival is also a celebration of the return of spring, with over a million tulips in 50 varieties blooming in public spaces across the National Capital Region.

This special part of history is celebrated through many events and is also commemorated with a large, bronze plaque at the site of the first planting

Also of importance is Dr. David Fairchild, a prominent botanist who planted the first cherry trees in D.C.
