Week 15 - Food porn (Local dish)
Almost every restaurant in The Hill claim to have invented Toasted Ravioli
Having looked forward so much to this SOOC week I ended up with only a few hours yesterday to take my shot. I was lucky enough in the end to have several shots from which to choose. I finally returned to this one - a land/seascape shot of the area where I live.
Basically, this is the view (weather dependent, of course) that greets me on the train home from work each evening. On the right is Killiney beach which looks out over Killiney Bay - the adopted home of a small pod of 3 dolphins. Occasionally I spot the dolphins from the train as they frolic about in the bay. On the left in the distance is Bray Head in the shadow of which is the town of Bray where I live. To the right of this you can see the Little Sugarloaf and Big Sugarloaf mountains. These are the gateway to the Wicklow Mountains - one of the most scenic areas in Ireland.
From the several shots on my short list, I chose this one because it is absolutely SOOC with no need of any pre- or post editing as the camera really did capture what I was seeing at the time with the naked eye and I believe that no software or processing could improve on this view that I am privileged to have on my doorstep.
Week: 33
Circumference: 41.5" - either measuring before dinner makes a difference or baby has shifted a bit.
Belly Button: Technically still there. If I lean back it is basically flush with the rest of my belly.
Enjoying: Slower days this week since the mere mention of snow keeps Seattlites at home. Knowing baby could realistically be here in less than a month. Naps. Mostly because they give the muscles above my belly a break from gravity.
Feeling: Tired more easily. A bit more back pain than usual this week. Denser.
Movement: Very definite awake times. More subdued as space gets tight but lots of elbows and knees and such to watch and feel.
Sleep: Tried staying up later and it definitely helped me sleep through the night (with a couple potty breaks, of course). This means I get up later, too. Which, honestly, is my preference in the winter anyway.
Food: Drinking lots of water and I want it COLD. Some days I'm really hungry others I'm not. Cutting back on portion sizes and increasing the amount of times I eat. Cooked at home a lot this week. Even made some food for the freezer for after the baby.
Anticipating: Seeing friends & family at the baby shower this weekend.
I had a perfect picture planned for this weeks ago. My plan was to go to a field with a little girl or boy and capture some great pictures of them holding a bunch of very colorful balloons. Well, Mother Nature had other ideas. We were hit with a few inches of snow during our "Spring Break". My husband, kids and I all built this snowman and I do have to say it is the best snowman we've ever made. We had a balloon in the house that I attached to his stick arm for balloon week. Definitely thinking outside the box on this one :)
What people do on Friday.
The best three shots each week, shot from the HIP, on a Friday. Inspired by John Brack’s “Collins St., 5pm” - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collins_St.,_5_pm the rules are simple;
•Do not use the view finder or LCD screen when taking aim; ‘shoot from the hip’
•Do not review, delete etc. until home.
•Only post photos taken on a Friday.
Though not a rule, unofficially this is a project about/featuring people; perhaps occasionally an animal. It is after all about the day, Friday and our relationship with the end of the (western), working week.
Week 41
This week I decided to try something a little different. I took something I had written and attempted to make it into a photo... I was fairly pleased with it, let me know what you think!
"My pillow is too hot, I should flip it over. The neighbors next door are fighting again. This time I guess he forgot to take out the garbage. I can hear almost every word through the paper thin walls, "I told you right before I left specifically because it's too heavy for me..." Blah blah blah. It's already 2AM, I'm so tired but for some reason I can't close my eyes. The main street outside my apartment window isn't busy but every so often a car roars by just loud enough to bug me. Oh, there goes a truck now. I can even hear planes flying and trains blowing their horns every few hours. The silence between the disturbances make them seem more significant than they really are.
My eyes have adjusted so well to the moonlight squeezing through my blinds it could be daylight, I wouldn't even know. I have always had trouble sleeping at night, and probably always will. When I was little I would walk out of my room an hour after my mom had put me to sleep and complain that I wasn't tired. My mom would then ask me if I had tried closing my eyes and I would think back, only recalling studying how the moonlight touched everything in my room and think that I must not have tried closing my eyes and return to my room without another word.
So I tried this now, closing my eyes. It's never really worked before so I don't know why it would now, but I'm desperate. The shouting from my neighbors pierced my silence, almost causing me to wince. I thought about them, the cars, about work and life. I noticed my eyes were open yet again and I shut them instantly. After rolling over multiple times to get comfortable I decided to turn on the radio to keep me from thinking about life and to possibly keep a constant noise and maybe even drown out everything else.
I begrudgingly left my warm sheets to cross the room to the radio. The cool air hit me like a brick and it took all of my strength to not return to my blankets. My feet screamed on the cold carpet and I dragged myself to the window just to make certain it was closed. It was. I then turned to my alarm clock which I had strategically placed on the opposite side of the room so that in the morning I was forced to get out of bed to stop the angry beeping. The clock was already set to my favorite station and some smooth guitar chords started swimming through my head. I turned down the volume so it was just loud enough to keep the cars and couple at bay.
I crossed the room again to my bed which had become cold in my absence. The rough voice of a man with a broken heart joined the guitar, adding a new color to the music. I thought about him, what was real in his story and what was fiction. Do we all exaggerate? Just a little bit, I'm sure. We, as people, like things to sound good..."
Thank you!
The big news of the week is that Olive has started sleeping 12-13 hours a night. While we're super excited that we now know she's capable of it, we'd love to see a little more consistency. Ah well, one day.
Her little personality continues to blossom. She's become very silly this week. She loves to tilt her head to the side and grin wildly. It's ridiculously cute. She also loves when daddy hangs her upside down and bounces her crazily on his knee. She has been much more confident in her voice this week. We took her to Target one night and she sat in the cart and babbled loudly. Luckily everyone around us thought she was adorable and not annoying (or at least that's what they said).
The biggest change this week is how well she's mastered finger foods. She loves to pick up steamed bits of apple and sweet potato and eat them. She's definitely starting to chew her food which means we give her a lot more table food. She still loves to eat and can put away a ton of food now. Her current favorites are apple sauce and pumpkin that Ryan flavors with brown sugar, maple syrup, nutmeg and cinnamon. Our girl eats well!

Week 40 - 14-21 October 2015
Shot of the Gold Coast at night from the hotel room at some ungodly hour of the morning. What a sight? More next week.
The aquascape has been through a massive algae attack, but a 3 day blackout and the removing of some leaves seemed to solve the problem. Now it's running low-light (2x18 W, 6 hours a day) for a couple of weeks, and i also raised the amount of fertilizers. We'll see what happens...

This week's challenge was to shoot an image SOOC. I'm used to doing a minor tweak or two to most of my shots. If I had my druthers, I would have done a slight crop to eliminate the dark corner in the lower right.. But I would not have made any other changes.
This was one of the best Ferris wheels - the light patterns were just awesome and I found a shorter exposure allowed me to capture more interesting light patterns.
Week 33/52 ~EP Project 52 ~ "Anticipation"
"Anticipation" ~ def: visualization of a future event or state
As it turns out, this has definitely been a week of much anticipation and anxiety for us. My son in law was waiting for news on a job that will ultimately relocate him, my daughter and grandkids to Georgia. Wednesday they received the news that it was a go. I sit here still today with such mixed feelings and emotions. I am entirely happy for them since it will provide such a better opportunity, but saddened that they will be that much farther from us. Because even though they didn't live around the corner from us, they were only 3 1/2 hours away as opposed to 8 hours now. But, I cannot help but feel excitement and anticipation for them in their new venture.
Don and I got up this morning to watch the sunrise. I decided just last night that I really wanted this shot for this week, don't know exactly why. Symbolic maybe to a new sunrise (beginnings) for my daughter and her family. But here it is.....a beautiful morning on Daytona Beach I share with you all..........with a hug.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!

This week i sewed some more nice pillows for kids. The embroidery design is called "loulou girls and big boys" made by kunterbunt-design. I love the little knight with his hobby horse :)
Yes, a fifty two week project. I will finish it, I promise. This was taken on the first week of January, so it counts, right? :D
I swear I just love my manual mode, I usually would NEVER use it, I was always afraid of screwing up, I now think I have really improved, what do you say?
week of February 12th, 2011
This week has been crazy busy, but it's opening night for my the musical I am in at our school. :)
I went to the Christmas market in Essen with Tim's mother and her partner. We visited the Primark and I bought way too much stuff. It was so much fun! :) Look at all those Christmas lights, it was SO pretty!
Since last Polaroid Week I got a new position at my work which doesn't give me as much desk time therefore less time to get up take a walk the the sole purpose of taking photos. So with this past week being rather busy and/or poor weather and the fact I didn't realize it was Polaroid week until Wednesday...I managed to get some instant shooting in on the Friday! And having ten sheets of Type 72 (the unopened box of Type 55 is being used this summer) I went out and got five shots, not bad for ten year expired instant film, but one fogged on the one side I learned, you have to make sure your 545 back is nice and snug when shooting it with an Intrepid camera.

I swear that in the last week or so, Olive turned two. All of the sudden she's climbing the tallest slide at the playground and going down it all on her own. She didn't cry at drop off either day this week. She hugged Ryan's leg, said goodbye and was off. That was huge!
Her school brought in Children's Theatre of Charlotte to perform Balloonacy this week. Since she wasn't going to be in school the day it was performed, the three of us took off early from gymnastics to see it. She sat in my lap, still as a church mouse during the entire 40 minute performance. Occasionally, she would point or turn back to me to make a comment about what she was seeing but other than that, she didn't stir. I was amazed and so proud of her behavior. It was fun to see her understand and follow along with the play. I know Ryan got excited for all the plays and movies in their future.
Our friends Greg and Katya sent a sweet care package to her this week and to my surprise, she spent as much time carefully unwrapping everything as she did playing with the goodies inside. She hasn't seen a wrapped present since her birthday and it was fun to see her totally get the concept. Made me really excited for the holidays!
I keep telling Ryan that "what's this" must be the 20 month version of a 3-year-old's "why." It's all we hear, all day long. Sometimes she genuinely doesn't know what something is but sometimes it feels like she's quizzing us. "What's this?" she'll ask as she musses her hair. "Your hair," we'll tell her and she'll nod at us with a slight smile.
The biggest way I know she's truly growing up is that we can now successfully rationalize with her. She's still rear facing in her car seat and lately it's become a big battle. She doesn't want to be in her car seat and she wants to see what's in front of her. She wants to see us and she wants to be able to communicate with us more easily while in the car. It's frustrating for all of us but it's especially frustrating while in a parking lot with a toddler that is too old and too strong to simply bend into place.
Lately I've talked her through why she needs to get into her car seat. We'll discuss how we're hungry and what we want to eat. I'll explain that we can't get to an activity or see our friends until we get in the car. Maybe it shouldn't but it amazes me to see her think through her options, visualize something that isn't in front of her or immediate and still make a rational decision. We've been able to successfully have this conversation even when I've allowed her to get completely worked up.
John Bulette and Gillian Weeks came to YMCA Silver Beach to celebrate their wedding weekend with us! For many guests, this was their first experience on the beautiful Eastern Shore. The weekend was great, the food was delicious and the memories will last forever.
For the very first time, the Abode of Divine Mother rejoiced an entire week as the whole ashram filled with so many sweet offspring. Wherever you looked, there were babies, toddlers, courageous pregnant women and amazingly open-minded parents and kids from all over the world who came (some for the first time) to spend their holidays together in an unusual and, for many, a very new environment. A daily schedule was created to be appropriate for parents, school-age and kindergarten kids. Activities such as puja, yajna, Bhagavad Gita games, Mother Earth meditation, bhajan singing, dancing, sharing, free time and games showed that spirituality on the bhakti path is not something boring, but brings fun, joy and learning too. The stone for a new era has been laid and is now waiting to be built upon! Jai Gurudev

The date thing in my camera is off by a day....
It’s the beginning of November and it’s quite chilly out. A cold rain began to drizzle as trick-or-treating was ending, knocking a lot of the color of the trees. Seasons in Charlotte tend to end abruptly or maybe that’s how it is everywhere when you don’t want to let go of the mild temperatures and blue skies of spring and fall.
The three of us have colds that refused to die when the month did. The time just changed and the nights seem so long and the sun so fleeting. Today I’m thinking about the calendar I’m about to write out. Olive brings an excitement to the change of seasons that wasn’t there before and also a busyness that can quickly turn to obligation.
It seems like every November Olive goes through a stormy period and then by December she’s back to being more even tempered and cooperative. I wonder if she can sense the busyness of the season, too.
We had a wonderful Halloween. We were so lucky to have my parents come up and trick-or-treat with us. Olive has been asking all month, “Is it Halloween time? Is it Halloween?” When she woke up on the 31st and we exclaimed “Happy Halloween!” she said, “It’s light out. It’s not Halloween yet.”
She had a fun day at school and then ran errands with me after. We didn’t even attempt a nap. Instead, we carved all our “icky gooey” pumpkins and welcomed my mom and dad when they arrived. We had a quick dinner of chocolate chip waffles and fruit and then got Olive into her costume. She brought her baby “Carolina” who was also dressed as a pumpkin and loaded herself, her baby and her treat bag into the wagon.
She charged up the driveways of the first few houses and then told us that we could stand by the curb because she could do it by herself. A few houses had scary decorations but she was just curious about them and rarely got nervous. After traveling about 75% of our neighborhood, she requested to go home. She said she was ready to sit by the fire, look through her candy and drink hot cocoa.
Once we got home, she crunched through four or five lollipops before we told her that it was enough candy for one night. We watched the Curious George Halloween special that I Tivoed for her and then she was off to bed.
It was a fun, easy night. A few days later she helped Mimi and I take down all the Halloween decorations and told us that she was sad it was over. She asked a few times in the days after why it couldn’t be Halloween again. We assured her there would be a lot more fun and a lot more decorations in the months coming up.
I suspect she will think that the time between Valentine’s Day and Easter will be quite dull.
