University of Delaware Weed Science Program has been part of a multi-state project examining reduced tillage for organic corn and soybean production. Discussed during this field tour is our results and our experiences with this production system. Information is pertinent to both organic farmers as well as those incorporating cover crops in conventional systems for weed control.

The 2009 National Tree Day was held at Rosherville Reserve in Mosman on Sunday 2 August with about 50 people taking part.

The tree planting area was on the southern side of the reserve up from the children’s playground in the vicinity of previous years' National Tree Days. The trees were provided by Mosman Council along with a free BBQ for all participants.

Schools Tree Day was held at the same location on Friday 31 July with approximately 100 students from year 1 and 2 at Middle Harbour Public School and Beauty Point Public School participating.

In total approximately 600 indigenous trees, shrubs and groundcovers were planted over the two tree planting days.

Prior to the planting days the area was subject to weed control using contract bush regenerators and the area was covered in mulch. There will be follow-up weed control and plant watering to help restore the site to natural bushland.

On July 17, 2012, West Regional Conservationist Astor Boozer and Washington State Conservationist Roylene Rides at the Door visited the Puget Sound area of Washington State to tour three Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) projects utilizing the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), Organic Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Partnership (PSSRP) EQIP funding.

All three sites are part of a larger Union River/Hood Canal Restoration area consisting of several hundred acres of land, including riparian forest, shrub/scrub and forested wetlands, salt marsh, and near shore habitat. Activities for habitat improvement as part of the EQIP and WRP contracts included dike removal for estuary restoration, tree planting and post plant weed control in a floodplain, fish passage barrier replacement and channel re-meander, along with addressing resource concerns on a local organic farm. Collectively these projects will improve habitat for numerous aquatic and terrestrial species including five species of Puget Sound salmon, three of which are populations listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

As the world looks toward a sustainable organic future, rich in healthy alternatives for people, so does the scientific community seek the necessary answers for ensuring Australia's eco systems can provide us such a vision. It is now well known that the pursuit of profit at any cost and irresponsible actions have caused the dramatic decline and degradation of our natural environments across the globe, and there is a desperate need for change before it is too late.

Whilst some, lost in the past still imagine this to be fallacy, others see the truth and choose to play an active role in reaching for a sustainable future. CGP Media's philosophy and aim has always been about pursuing such goals and aiding in the ethical, cultural and environmental cause with 2008 set to be another big year in conservation production.

Cliff Guy, owner and director of CGP Media is well known for his leadership in the field of adventure and environmental media production, with series such as Australian Adventure, The Camping Show and Gemseeking Australia in ongoing production. To add to the list, CGP Media has recently been engaged by a Stakeholder Group administered by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, to help with the assault and control of one of Australia's most noxious weeds, Lantana camara.

Cliff Guy quote: " This invasive weed has taken over large areas of our natural bushland causing mass devastation, but thanks to the determined efforts of researchers and field workers, and the development of the new 'Splatter Gun', there is hope of returning our suffering eco systems back to a natural state."

The first of the filming for this project has taken place in the thickly forested country of Kyogle, Northern New South Wales, where Cliff and robust cameraman Bryan Duffy took to the wilds to capture the Splatter Gun in action. With weed control being one of Australia's most pressing issues to save the native environments, The Splatter Gun has been developed to deliver a targeted herbicide mix directly to invasive weeds, with little if any overspray or effect on the native vegetation. It is currently being viewed as the most effective weapon ever designed for weed control.

Cliff Guy's choice of cameras for the job were the JVC 101E's.

Cliff quote: "heading into what many see as an alien environment, you need to be well equipped, but travelling light. JVC HDV cameras on Manfrotto Tripods provide the perfect choice for many of our wilderness expeditions, as they offer all the key elements for producing superior quality results, with compact size, strength and lighter weight portability for long days traversing rugged terrain"

Lantana forms an almost impenetrable wall in all manner of countryside, disabling other native plants from growing, so this was never to be an easy expedition for CGP Media, but never the less, stage 1 filming of this production is now complete, thanks again to a dedicated team and the assistance of JVC technology.

The use of coir pallet or coir pillows is an excellent technique for establishing marginal vegetation around lakes edges and on all watercourse banks. The pallets are a cost-effective, organic protection that is a suitable alternative to hard revetments in many applications. Coir Pallets provide a suitable method of introducing marginal habitat to artificially lined lakes, rivers and canals.

Benefits of using Coir pallets:

•Stream/River bank protection

•Storm water channels

•Protection from wind erosion and Wetland environments

•Mulching, antiweed, vegetative water channels

Northern Ireland Railways, Metropolitan Vickers (Metrovick), 104 Class Locomotive No.105, with the Irish Rail Weed Control Train at Portrush, June 1992.

The weevils (Curculionidae), is active worldwide 40000-60000 species, about 1,200 species have been described in central Europe. Worldwide, about one in every five known species of beetle and every 30th Species in this group. So that the weevil is probably the most diverse family of all living things. Some species of this family cause damage in agriculture, including the Getreiderüssler that occurred in ancient Egypt. Recently, some species were also successfully used for biological weed control. The result is by far most species, however, a hidden life, are a few millimeters long, and to discover only targeted observation.

The Center for Regenerative Agriculture at the University of Missouri recently hosted U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Robert Bonnie (right) on a tour of Big River Grain and Cattle, LLC, owned and operated by Daniel and Jeff Bonacker of Cedar Hill, Mo. As one of approximately 140 grant projects being funded by the USDA’s Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities, the University of Missouri hopes to assist state producers in adopting a wide range of climate-smart practices to create more resilient crop and livestock systems over the course of five years, as well as develop and expand markets for the resulting commodities.
