Something Happens Here

Dufferin Station

There are thirty-one large pixelated images integrated into the architecture of Dufferin Station; you'll find several on each of the Eastbound and Westbound platforms and many more upstairs in the concourse. The large coloured images, composed of 24,000 tiles, have been created from photographs of the area, and so highly pixelated as to be virtually unrecognizable. Each image tells a story of something that happened here, or nearby. Clues to these stories are embedded within the pixelated images in the form of over one hundred metal tiles that the artists refer to as “Memorial Pixels”. These memorial pixels display text or images of events and places in and around the station – a spilled coffee cup, a biplane, a reference to a furniture store, a broken comb, a story about Mogadishu. The texts are derived from poems, interviews and other writings about the experiences of local community members. There are enough of these little clues that even someone who passes through this station on their daily commute has the opportunity to keep discovering new aspects of this work.

The artists, Karen Shanski and Eduardo Aquino of design firm spmb, describe the project as “a collection of images of the human experiences, environments, and urbanscapes from the neighbourhood, bringing a sense of place to the interior of the station and creating a distinctive experience for TTC customers”. The whole is a kind of interior landscape which celebrates the community life of Bloordale Village above ground.

By the water’s edge (Garage Door)

136 Milton St.

Here you see a single car garage door transformed into a shimmering lake surrounded by rocky shores and tall pine trees. The sky above is pale blue with billowing white clouds. In the distance, the land rises up covered in evergreens and you can see it reflected in the ripples of the water. In the foreground you can see the rocky shore as if you could step onto it, right where the pink and green moss is growing on the rock face. You can almost feel a soft breeze while looking out across the water.

This mural was inspired by the family who lives in the house, their love for the outdoors and their frequent trips to the lake, and Julii McMillan’s personal connection to water. Water has a calming effect. It is nourishing. We all share a need for it. Water is life. Julii wanted to create a mural that felt like a window into nature, to inspire the family and their neighbours to take a deep breath upon seeing it. When we come close to a body of water our breath often changes, it grows slow and long and deep. Julii hopes to evoke this feeling in the viewer while opening up space to just be.

Describing her experience, Julii reflected that, “Working on this project, as an artist and as a facilitator was deeply enriching. Being witness to a neighbourhood taking a stand, seeing art as a tool for demonstration, seeing my fellow artists volunteering their time and skills for a good cause, and feeling the support that came from all around was invaluable. Action is powerful and inspiring. Seeing adults setting this example for their children, for each other, still brings a smile to my face. This event changed us all and showed us what is possible when we come together. This experience brings to mind one of my favorite quotes by Anais Nin, ‘A friend represents a world in us, a world not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born’’. This project gave birth to a new part of myself and I hope in experiencing the murals first hand you too have been changed for the better, to be the change you want to see in the world.”

Butterfly’s Paradise (Garage Door)

97 Wesley St.

This vibrant mural was painted on the single door garage of a townhouse. This whimsical scene depicts a black swallowtail butterfly in a garden of wildflowers. A cool coloured background can be seen with a tie-dye feel painted with greens, turquoises and blues that blend into each other softly and smoothly. Several stems, leaves, and white flowers of the Queen Anne’s Lace plant are layered on top of each other to create depth. In the foreground, a large 3 foot squared butterfly is planting itself on a budding flower. Highlights of green and blue make the butterfly stand out and compliment the background.

Julia Prajza is a Muralist, Lettering Artist & Designer in Toronto. With her multidisciplinary practice, she creates big and bold statement pieces with ornate details, vibrant colours, and a whimsical feel. Emerging into the public and community-engaged art world, Julia wants to bring more joy and positivity into our everyday lives. She is grateful to have co-founded the Neighbourhood Love Collective in order to explore the power of art and its ability to cultivate human connection and improve our mental health.

Fun fact: Black swallowtail butterflies can be found throughout Ontario and southern Canada all the way to northern Mexico. These elegant winged creatures and their caterpillar selves are big fans of plants in the carrot family, which include dill, fennel, parsley, carrots, celery, and Queen Anne's Lace. These butterflies are also swift flyers with short life cycles that total an average of 41-72 days.

Ossington Particles

Ossington Station

Beneath the ground near Ossington Station lies the vestiges of Garrison Creek which drained the watershed north of St. Clair Avenue into Lake Ontario at Toronto Harbour. Like its neighbour Taddle Creek, it is now buried, and lost to time and urban development. Although these buried creeks still have ways to make themselves known through wet basements, tilting buildings and city signage.

The “particles” on the station walls trace the outline of the creek as they guide us toward the platform exits, now guiding the flow of people, not water.

Approximately 800 acrylic tiles in the black and red colours of Ossington Station mark the lines of the watershed and tell the story of the natural and human history of this site. But the story is uncertain, traced in dotted lines, like fragments of a puzzle, an outline of what once was. Between benches and on staircase landings rise vertical segments like trees or prehistoric plants. At the Westbound Platform exit what looks like a red pinecone is outlined on the wall, and a small forest occupies the Eastbound Platform exit. These particles pay tribute to the site's history, and the natural layers that have been displaced by the city through which we now travel.

Organic forms are important to artist Scott Eunson, and a recurring theme in his work. He is one of the creators of the plant-shaped bike posts you may have seen around Toronto. Scott is a designer, architect and artist working in Toronto.

Flight of the Passenger Pigeon

Hello I am Susan Blight. Let us start with Omiimii. Mimico takes its name from the Anishinaabe word for “place of abundant pigeons'' as at one time, omiimii was the most abundant bird on the planet and the mouth of Mimico Creek was a migratory stopover. The passenger pigeon flew in huge flocks that could be several miles wide and could reach a length of forty miles; estimates say omiimiiwag were flying past Etobicoke at a rate of 300 million per hour and there are reports of a single flock taking three days to pass over. Imagine that.

Omiimii provided food and were an important part of the ecosystem of the land now known as Etobicoke, Wadobekong, “where the Alders grow”. The green alder also called mountain alder and the speckled alder are Indigenous to Ontario. Alders produce nitrogen bacterium, the symbiotic relationship the Alder has to nitrogen fixing bacteria releases one of the most important nutrients for plant life, for human life. Alders improve the soil as they grow, and they flourish in new forests after a forest fire and have an influence on everything around them. Imagine that.

Omiimii was also a social bird and delicate in that they only lay one egg at a time. The passenger pigeon suffered terribly under colonization; not just hunted for food but as live targets and treated horribly like having their eyelids sewn shut to be used as live decoys to hunt other pigeons. The railroads facilitated this treatment of the passenger pigeon as they were shipped by the millions on trains bound for cities along the Atlantic coast. Omiimii is now extinct.

The last known passenger pigeon died in 1914 at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Writing in 1837, Anna Brownell Jameson described the landscape of the Etobicoke and Mimico Creek watersheds as mysterious spaces “where foot of man hath never penetrated”. We know that she was wrong as Indigenous presence on these lands and waters has an imprint and continues to imprint upon the land in abundant and generative ways. Our long-standing relations to omiimii, to wadoop, to our non-human relatives continue and is a commitment to the beauty of this world even in the face of ongoing destruction and devastation.

Lesya Urainka Monument by Mykailo Chereshniovsky, High Park: This statue at the east of Colborne Lodge Drive honours celebrated Ukrainian poet and playwright, Lesya Ukrainka. It was erected in the fall of 1975, the International Year of the Woman.

Lesya Ukrainka was born in Ukraine in 1871 at a time when Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire. She began to write poetry in her native language at an early age. Publishing in Ukrainian was prohibited so the young Larysa Petrivna Kosach-Kvitka adopted the pseudonym of Lesya Ukrainka. Her work is often focused on the demand for human rights and national freedom, which made the use of a pseudonym doubly important to protect her safety. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 42.

She is portrayed holding flowers, her clothes draped in a classical style. Engraved on the plinth is the quote "Whoever liberates themselves shall be free. Whoever is liberated by others captive shall remain". The sculptor, Mykailo Chereshniovsky, was born in Ukraine and emigrated to New York after the Second World War. He began as a wood carver before working in bronze and completed several busts and monuments for the Ukrainian community across North America.

From Here to Now

Bayview Station

Throughout Bayview station you’ll find twenty-four pieces. Start exploring and look for black swirls on the floors and walls. At first you might not recognize what they are, but keep moving, when you view these works from the right perspective you’ll have that A-Ha moment! You’ll often see a block of colour near the black illustration, shift your perspective until it starts to look like a square to view the piece from the right angle. Keep your eye out for a needle and spool, a tea cup, a cut apple, slices of lemon, a salt shaker. There are more treasures in store up the stairs.

The visual distortion, known as anamorphosis, shifts with the viewer’s position. The image seems distorted when seen from a frontal position but when viewed from one side or from an angle it resumes normal proportions. For a real treat view the images through the lens of your smartphone: they’ll appear as if in augmented reality – a ladder leaning against the wall, a stepladder, a pocket watch floating in the air, a dog waiting at the top of the stairs for its owner to come home.

The work heightens our awareness about movement and travel through these pedestrian spaces and infuses our experience with a sense of play. The pieces are made from waterjet-cut glazed ceramic tiles laid in the walls and floors, and based on free-hand black line drawings. The artist, Panya Clark Espinal, is a Toronto-based multi-media installation artist who has produced many public art commissions. Her pixelated interpretation of the famous Jack Pine painting by Tom Thomson is installed at Barberry Place, just a block from this station.

The Pollinators

1148 Weston Rd.

This mural, which wraps the three outside walls of this building and one wall of the neighbouring building to the West, was designed and painted by me, in 2017 with funding from the Mount Dennis BIA. If you are on the corner you should be in front of the entrance to the café Supercoffee. In the top left corner of the mural are some coffee blossoms and leaves and along the whole top of the building is a city skyline at sunset, with the actual windows of the building appearing as the windows of the buildings in the painting. Along the bottom you will see a grassy garden environment with a background in warm colours featuring various native flowers. Each flower, starting with lavender, raspberry and squash at the front, was chosen because it is a plant that we use for food or medicine, and one that we would have a much harder time getting without the help of pollinators.

Pollinators, if you don’t know, are any animals that spread pollen from one flower to another, thus helping that plant reproduce more widely. Pollination by this method is responsible for most of the reproduction of flowering plants, and while lots of animals pollinate, by far the most efficient are bees.

As you walk around to the long wall, the info panel between the windows can tell you which plant and bee species are featured on the wall. On the outside facing Eglinton you can easily see the honey bee on a coffee blossom next to a carpenter bee on a purple stalk of sage. Since I painted this, what was once the back parking lot has become an enclosed patio so to see that half of the mural, travel through Supercoffee to their outside seating area or peek in from outside. Up above the patio on the wall facing west you’ll see more coffee blossoms and the mason bee in flight, while down below you’ll find the bumblebee on some echinacea. On the patio wall facing north you’ll see a green sweat bee in flight and in the foreground a leafcutter bee on some flowering alfalfa.

Toronto is home to an astonishing diversity of bees, with over 360 species of bees in 6 different families - and there are only 7 families of bees on Earth! I wanted this mural to pay respect to the human diversity of the Mount Dennis community through the metaphor of the city’s diverse bee population, while also hopefully drawing a connection between things we love like coffee, berries, and herbs and the pollinators who make those parts of our daily life possible.

We are All Animals, 130 Bloor Street West: We arrive at the forecourt of this condominium to find a family of coyotes waiting outside the entrance. A pup, huddled under its mother, looks toward the street and the park beyond. The other coyotes face away from the park, and toward the building’s entrance: do they want to come in?

But these coyotes are not entirely natural. Their triangulated forms bridge the natural and digital worlds. Do you see the large LED screen near the entrance to the building? This part of the work also focuses on the relationship between the natural and the digital. Powered by gaming software, the digital landscape changes subtly with the seasons. This digital representation of the natural environment sits in conversation with the environment of High Park just steps away across the street. Take a seat on the brass bench, maybe pause to consider the co-existence of ecology, environmentalism and the technology we have created. This bench is inscribed with the name of this work “we are all animals”.

The creators, Public Studio, is the collective art practice of filmmaker Elle Flanders and architect Tamira Sawatzky. The artists are concerned with the personal, social, and political implications of landscape. Public Studio’s multidisciplinary practice often engages themes of political dissent, war and militarization, and ecology and urbanization, through the activation of site. Watch the video in the gallery to hear the artists describe the work.

Spring

Further down south, spring has arrived and a brown bear comes out of hibernation, searching for food and water. Ecosystems abound, and as the bear paws around, she is surrounded by networks of underground mycorrhizae, who live in symbiosis with plants, insects, and bacteria. These under-soil mycorrhizae help to provide phosphorus and nitrogen to their soil-plant friends. And every once in a while, these mycorrhizae reproduce and send up fruiting bodies that produce spores, or as we know them, mushrooms, truffles and chanterelles.

Fresh water gives life to surrounding fauna, and with help from the sun, growth is restored. These ecosystems are a source of energy, a glowing nucleus pulsating life into centuries old forests. In these woodlands, a magical owl watches over the cycles of life that have sustained themselves since before humans arrived. Forests that thrived, where once prehistoric animals roamed, and where hybrid dinosaur creatures capture our imaginations. They come to remind us that the fossil fuels we excavate today - oil, gas and coal, come from these ancient forests, plants, algae and plankton. As we consume these decaying organic remains that are over millions of years old, we release carbon dioxide into our airs and consequently cause man made exponential global warming.

As spirits of these ancient plants are released into the skies, they take the form of carbon dioxide and populate the air like vagabonds far from their underground home. Upon their journey drifting through northern skies, they too are witness to the surreal beauty of Aurora Borealis. Northern lights - a sign that solar winds have paid us a visit and altered electrons and protons in Mother Earth’s atmosphere. A reminder that our tiny earthly ecosystems are interconnected with far away giant stars and energies.

Down below, an elder shares the ways of times past when humans lived in harmony with nature, when we lived from earth, with earth, and we would make sure to replenish and respect all living beings. We treated Mother Nature for the grand spirit that she is, abundant, inspiring, magical, and strong. Humans were not above nature but part of her great and wise ecosystems.

The big blue moon overhears these tales and whispers her song down to the waters, making the tides dance to her melody, as the fisherman paddles through the currents and is guided by her nightly sky map. She sings to the fox and the farmer, and all of the villagers below, telling them when to plant their crops in harmony with her lunar cycles, reminding them to cultivate sustainable lands and to respect the wisdom of ancient seeds. The farmer listens intently, casting her eyes up thanking the moon for its song, and grateful for her crop. The farmer’s friend, a Praying Mantis, known as a master predator of arthropods, sits guarding her crop of corn. Corn is a staple food and cultural symbol of Indigenous Peoples across the Americas for over 10,000 years. After Indigenous peoples taught European settlers to grow the indigenous grain, it was introduced around the world. Considered a sacred plant, Maize shapes daily meals, and influences spiritual, physical and economic systems.

Tallawah by Kareen Weir: In response to the Women Paint’s theme “Naturally Resilient,” I reflected on how surviving the Covid-19 pandemic has been a sign of our resilience. The world changed overnight, and here we are over a year later grappling with the shift as a global society. I have found in times like these that we need comforting reminders that though challenging and trying times may come, we will get through.

My mural's message reads: “TALLAWAH.” Tallawah is a Jamaican Patwah word that means to be strong, fearless, strong-willed, and not to be underestimated. Jamaicans often use the phrase “We likkle but, we tallawah,” which means that we may be small but we are strong and can do or achieve anything.

The rendering is a cross section beneath the surface of the earth to show the intricate intertwining of roots that form the letters of this Patwah adjective. The variance in the size of the roots in contrast to the tiny sprouts of renewed life emphasize all that is possible for us; to both stand strong and start anew. I drew my inspiration from my history. The mural utilizes Patwah language (Creole) spoken on the street amongst the Jamaican Diaspora as context for the artwork. The language reflects my birthplace’s past struggles with slavery and its ancestry from the mother continent Africa, as well as the European colonization. It has come to represent our people and culture. Its survival means that the spirits of those who spoke it must've been just as resilient. It serves as a message to the diaspora, the GTA and beyond that we are still here.

It is a proud moment to see Patwah represented, to show that there is a strong Afro-Caribbean presence in our arts community. It's another step in: increasing the language's visibility in these spaces, as well as educating, raising awareness on and preserving what's been inherited and left by our ancestors. I wanted to pass on this positive reminder to the public as it has been passed onto me, and to use a language born out of resilience to be a sign and expression of hope. Keep moving forward. Continue to root for yourself. Pat yourself on the back for how far you've come. Be grateful that we’re still present and push forward in graceful strength to the future.

aughan Metropolitan Centre Station

If you’re standing in the centre of this station you’re in the right place to view this work. Look up at the ceiling, and you might start to feel like you are inside a fly's eye, or as artist and architect Paul Raff describes it “an inside-out mirror ball”. This collaboration between Paul Raff Studio and the station's architects, Grimshaw Architects, is designed to allow sunlight to enter the station during all daylight hours.

The reflective dome is punctured at intervals to allow light into the open space, while the mirrored ceiling maximizes the opportunities for this light to be shared around the interior space. At the same time, the convex mirrors offer a delightful diversion if we look up to see ourselves and others reflected in the ceiling. As Raff says, “Architecture is what separates us from the natural world. Due to the oblong shape of the building (it’s actually shaped like a contact lens) we had a chance to develop an articulation and extension of the natural world.”

Using the Flickr API from XForms, as explained in the Introduction to XForms.

While my husband was perusing the online Campmor catalog, he came across these Hot Deals! in eyewear. He said, "They're just $2.97 from $45. Why don't you order a whole bunch of pairs?"

And I said, "Who are you, and what did you do with my tightwad husband?!" And then I ordered six pairs.* You can, too.

(For 365 Days. This is Day 106.)

*I'm only wearing five.

This is a test shot.

I don't find the practicality in spending +$200 for a ring light/flash.

So in my quest for great catchlight, I went to the discount store and picked up a circline lighting unit ($5) like this one. I then picked up a lightbulb adaptor ($3) to screw onto the circline. I padded two of the brackets with white gaffers tape and found a heavy duty extension cord. All I had to do was remove the lens hood and shoot through one of the three gaps. Voila - new ring light.

And all it took was about nine bucks & some ingenuity.

Weston: Then and Now Mural

1901 Weston Road

"Weston: Then and Now" is a three-wall mural series. The mural was designed by artists Jim Bravo, Niel Yee, Rowena Kizito and Bryan Bermudez.

The murals depict the same intersection on Weston Road on each wall at different periods of time. The first wall depicts school children in the 1920’s, the second focusing on depiction of older children in the mid-20th century and the last wall in the series showing young adults of the present day.

Home (Bell Box)

Royal York Rd., north of Hornell St. (west side)

The mural in front of you is a large box painted with fields of green grass and blue skies with passing clouds. There is a pink fence and a small white house with smoke coming out of its chimney, 3 pink ponies running in the fields, a white dog with black spots, and ducks swimming in the pond.

Natalie Very B., the artist behind this piece, is a Polish-Canadian illustrator, muralist, educator, and art therapist in training. Natalie used to only exclusively depict strong, feminist women in her murals. However this opportunity to collaborate with Neighbourhood Love allowed her to think as well as paint, literally, “outside the box”. With this piece she learned how to expand her colour palette and work with natural, yet still whimsical, landscapes. She truly hopes that this artwork brings a bit of sunshine to the Etobicoke area and all of its residents.

This piece promotes love for the neighbourhood and celebrates all communities living together in peace. She hopes that it brightens the days of those who pass by and make them feel at home. During the process, Natalie really appreciated all the people who took the time to stop by and cheer her on. They said that it meant so much to them to have such joyful artwork in their neighbourhood. Many expressed gratitude for this piece that helps to spread good vibes and love through colour and positivity.

Lawrence Underpass Mural

Lawrence Ave underpass (at Weston GO/UP Express Station)

Underneath the railway is a colourful mural on both sides that incorporates flora, fauna and a modern touch with the use of graffiti font.

Artists Alex Bacon (Alexander Lazich) and Que Rockford (Quentin Rockford) have incorporated local flowers and wildlife against an abstract background. The artists use spray paint to give the animals and flowers a soft feel which contrasts with the hard lines and sharp edges of the graffiti-style writing.

Quentin is Anishinaabe and Odawa: the artist’s indigenous background influences his style of painting and ultimately the mural itself. Quentin fashions the images of animals in the style of native art.

The artists have incorporated natural features of the Humber River and Weston, such as great blue herons, saw-whet owl, blue jays, salmon and local flora such as the red trillium.

The mural is a celebration of Rockford’s family and heritage. If you look closely you will see an image of the artist’s great-great grandmother incorporated into the mural’s vibrancy.

Croft St. at College St.

On both sides of tiny Croft Street are several murals. This particular mural is by Elicser Elliot, a Canadian born artist and a legendary figure in Toronto’s street art community. His work can be found across the city as well as Africa and the Caribbean. His work is known for its organic shapes and layered textures which build to form the figures in his work. His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum and he is also responsible for the iconic “Hug Me” tree on Queen Street West at Soho Street. What I love about this piece is the raw emotion and the message reminding us to “protect our energy”.

Freestyled and performance captured by award-winning professional Belly Dancer Mary Winpenny.

In dance, floorwork refers to movements performed on the floor.

Developed in Cairo 1920s, modern Egyptian Belly Dance or "Raqs Sharqi" has roots in Egyptian folkloric dances with some influence from western dance genres. In Egyptian style, the movements tend to be more internalized and smaller than other styles of belly dance. Egyptian Raqs include some ballet and ballroom dance influences, such as in footwork (for example the use of arabesque) and in stance and arm positions, although adapted to an oriental style.

Originally performed to "Yearning" by Raul Ferrando. Tempo = 74.00 BPM

Tempting though it was, I didn't buy this. I already have more swimsuits than I can use and there's no more space in my wardrobe!

A swimsuit like this will look great with a loose white skirt and sandals for the walk down to the beach. Spread out a towel, slip off the skirt and get to work on the tan. Actually that's the only reason I don't do this! I tan too quickly and too obviously.

Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre Ikeda Tower and Garden

6 Garamond Court

Look up! The Sid and Marie Ikeda Tower was erected in 1998 when the JCCC moved to its current location at 6 Garamond Court. It acts as a welcoming beacon to the community and has become one of the JCCC’s signature architectural features. It was designed, in the style of a Japanese andon lantern, by Bruce Kuwabara of KPMB Architects.

As you walk under the tower and closer to the JCCC’s main entrance, on either side of the walkway you find the Ijusha Garden, named in honour of the post-war new immigrant community. This traditional Japanese landscape garden was officially opened in June 1999 by Prince and Princess Hitachi-no-Miya of Japan. It was designed by landscape architect Scott Yonezo Fujita, who first trained in Japan and then received his Canadian credentials at the Ryerson Institute of Technology.

Shin-ijusha is the Japanese word for Japanese immigrants who arrived in Canada after WWII. Fujita-san, through his design and building of this garden, sought to bring the established pre-war Japanese Canadians and the Shin-ijusha communities together to celebrate their common heritage. About 70 children from four different Japanese language schools of Ijusha families volunteered to plant boxwoods in the garden.

On both sides of the garden, you will see Japanese flowering cherry trees. Stepping onto the central sidewalk is like strolling through a landscape in Japan. The garden evokes images of the mountains and seas of Japan. Pine trees shaped like bonsai as aged, large rocks, raked gravel and other trees and bushes are strategically placed after much consideration to create that impression. Textures of hard and soft, large trees and small shrubs, subtle colours in varying shades of green, strong lines and shapes contrasting with more diffuse backgrounds– these elements are all carefully chosen and placed to create a natural harmony. Drawing from traditional Japanese garden elements, there are bamboo fences and a large stone lantern. As the garden is a living installation, it is always evolving and requires constant maintenance. Left to nature, the plants would overgrow and lose their form, weeds would take over and the tranquillity, balance and harmony of the garden would be lost. Today, the Toronto Japanese Garden Club and volunteers tend the gardens.

The Love Locks

7 Tank House Lane

The 9-metre long installation spells out the word “love” before a red brick backdrop, inviting visitors to latch on a token of their emotions. The installation is made of steel and local reclaimed lumber, which keeps in line with the Distillery’s industrial-chic vibe. Hundreds of locks already hang from metal mesh inside the bold capital letters and an adjacent heart.

Love me, love me

Say that you love me

Fool me, fool me

Go on and fool me

Love me, love me

Pretend that you love me

Leave me, leave me

Just say that you need me

So I cry and I beg for you to...

Welcome to Mount Dennis

1156 Weston Rd.

This mural was painted in 2014 by lead artist Emanuel Ciobanica with the help of four local youth whose names are given under the window to the right side of the mural’s center. It was funded by Street Art Toronto and replaced an older mural that had started to fall apart.

The mural depicts trees in summer surrounded by blossoming flowers in all colours, with water cutting through the middle of the scene. The water was intended to symbolize growth and reference the nearby Humber River. Among the lilypads is a frog if you look closely.

Several children are playing throughout the mural. Two are climbing among the branches of the tree on the far left, while two sit on the bridge over the water in the center of the mural. On the right side of the water there is a girl hanging upside down from a tree and another standing holding a rabbit. These children were intended to represent the diversity of the Weston-Mount Dennis community and also a symbol of its future.

The colourful flowers and deep greens of the foliage keep this corner looking bright even in winter. I really like how the actual trees in front of the mural and the painted trees behind seem to become one scene and because the real tree branches block different parts of the mural, you end up having to step around the trees to see the different parts of the mural and that allows for all these little discoveries of the details that you might not appreciate as much if you took in the whole mural at once.

Paragon Dance Animations - CiCi STAMPER SHUFFLE DANCE VOL 2

Available exclusively at Uber Event May 25 2022

VLOG #031

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Product Description

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

In Volume 1, Shuffle Queen CiCi Stamper shares her social media famous style of shuffling/cutting shapes that combines pirouettes, heels floorwork and acrobatic tricks. There are many shuffle queens on social media, but none brings it to a new level like CiCi.

Volume 2, is a more club friendly focused on footwork without the floorwork and acrobatics.

Shuffle dance is a footwork dance developed in the UK during the late 1980s and early 90s in Melbourne Australia, which known as Melbourne Shuffle. It is originally danced to Hardstyle music when the genre popularity was at the peak in Melbourne.

Melbourne shuffle trend subsided mid-2009 and the dance moves later resurface into a new style of shuffling called "Cutting Shapes". Nowadays the new shuffle dance moves work well with any electronic dance music from Electro House, House Music, Melbourne Bounce, even the Old School Eurodance and etc.

Ice World

The pristine lands of Arctic ice unfold onto a magical landscape. Deep inside of an ice cave, different shades of blue reflect melting walls. A frozen cave that rains northern waters. Warmth has carved out a hollow space, and as we follow this tunnel of frozen rain drops, we reach an opening at the foot of a giant glacier. Light and a vast snow-covered land opens before us.

Whispers of Nature's ancestors living in symbiosis with ancient ecosystems. The Inuit have lived here for millennia, with a deep understanding that humans are an integral part of all living creatures and ecosystems; their survival based upon a profound and intimate relationship held with the environment. Wood, bone, antlers and claws used as hooks to catch Arctic Char; hunting for fish has always been an important source of food.

Other creatures also inhabit these lands of ice and snow. The arctic is home to the largest bears in the world, polar bears, the arctic’s top predators. And in these harsh cold lands, a polar bear cub has two and a half years to learn from its mother how to survive. As our planet warms and ice caps melt, polar bear populations are increasingly at risk and are directly impacted by climate change. They now face a challenging road ahead of them to secure their survival.

Melting ice caps are not only affecting the survival of those above land, they are also causing major challenges to sea creatures underwater, such as the Narwhal, a unique tusked whale whose survival is endangered. For thousands of years, these creatures have been a staple of the Inuit community and have played a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems. Arctic oil and gas exploration is increasing as ice caps melt, and as oil and gas industries lobby for continued and increased exploration, and as humans continue to consume more oil and gas, offshore arctic drilling will increasingly disrupt this pristine land. Seismic testing and underwater explosions are known to disrupt communication and orientation for those undersea. It is our fossil fuel dependency that is changing lives and vast ecosystems in deep blue waters, even when we do not see them.

Up ahead transport ships and trade routes also form part of our modern-day landscape in the Arctic. With warming temperatures and disappearing ice caps, Arctic ship traffic is expected to increase, as industries eye new trade routes. In time, as more ships make their way through the Northwest Passage and the Northern Sea route, greenhouse and methane gas emissions will also continue to increase. These once untouched lands are rapidly transforming, but time and hope remain for us to make more sustainable choices.

Battersby’s March

Hello, I am Philip Cote. This writing is a counter narrative to John Kuna’s Mural entitled “Battersby's March” (War of 1812). Why is it necessary that there be such an important Indigenous reflection? The history of this country Canada rests on a single settler narrative and lens that marginalizes Indigenous contributions since the earliest documentations of European arrival and it is at this point we begin to see the importance of why Indigenous people were vanished from written colonial histories and narratives.

The War of 1812 was a battle set between two colonizing forces, the British and the Americans, both from the same origins in England. A division started by these earlier conflicts in the American Revolution and the Niagara Treaty of 1764. This is the beginning of the American Revolution of 1776 and how it was influenced by the Niagara Treaty of 1764 giving rights to Indigenous peoples and by doing so gave a place for the rights to Indians for protection of their home lands. Within all of these conflicts Indigenous people were at the heart of it as they were allies on either side to the British and to Americans. Much of what was going on during the expansion of the colonies was indeed about the Indian. For the Americans, the Indigenous people stood in the way of complete ownership of lands west of the thirteen colonies and if they were to form a new country they needed access to all the Indigenous lands and access to all of its natural resources to build this “new” country.

Indigenous alliances were formed over the many conflicts with the American colonies in which small wars happened. Peace was made each time and more land was taken and again conflict would happen, and peace would be made again. It was a pattern and vicious circle that repeated itself over and over until there were those few who would remember that would rise up to become leaders. Throughout this time in settler history the relations between indigenous people and those early settlers from the frontier days gave reasons to create leagues to protect Indigenous lands collectively. There is a list of significant indigenous leaders that are important to note throughout this important time period in Canadian history and there is no mention of any of them in Kuna’s Mural. This was a colonial production and a complete eraser of Indigenous contributions at important points in history. Ignoring these facts in history is the starting point of systemic racism where there should be a space put aside and told of these major Indigenous figures in the War of 1812 and the Indigenous leaders. Within Tecumseh’s alliance is where we can begin to see the evidence of the importance of why these leaders deserve a mention in our shared histories. Chief Corn Planter, Pontiac, Blue Jacket, Chief Little Turtle, Chief Roundhead of the Wendat and Odawa Chief Naywash, Odawa Chief Giiminiiijaagan Odawa Chief Mookomaanish Awaasizii (Brown Bullhead) and of course Tecumseh. All these leaders proved themselves long before the war of 1812 in battles such as Brownstown, Monguagon, Fort Meigs, Detroit and not to mention the thousands of warriors who followed those indigenous leaders into battle.

On 13 August 1812 General Isaac Brock arrived at Amherstburg and the famous meeting took place between him and Shawnee leader Tecumseh. Brock's aide, Captain John Glegg, described Tecumseh "with bright eyes beaming cheerfulness, energy and decision."

Brock's bold decision to attack Detroit was opposed by all his advisors but deeply impressed Tecumseh, who was said to declare of Brock, "This is a man!" keep in mind these are the few words that were shared in Brocks Memoires and at no other time does he mention Tecumseh as an ally or give credit to his reputation as a battle commander or even that he stopped the Americans at our border.

The War of 1812 was won because of the Indigenous alliance and their reputation of successful battles. Prior to the War of 1812 there were battles won by Indigenous warriors between American soldiers and militia men who had seen and fought with those warriors in battles who could attest to and leave a lasting memory of their skills on the battlefield.

Even here in Toronto the War of 1812 came to our doorstep and the Indigenous allies defended the people at Fort York and were courageous in the efforts. There is a story that speaks of these thirteen warriors: a mix of nations; the Mississauga, Chippewa, Ojibway, Odawa, and the Haudenosaunee who stood their ground when American troops landed on the north shore of Lake Ontario. There was a fierce battle as the Americans came ashore but Indigenous warriors kept them off until the settlers were safe and cleared from the Fort. There was a memorial (now removed) at Fort York dedicated to those thirteen warriors. And also, I’ve heard there were thirteen trees planted on the Lakeshore to honour these brave warriors and their deeds. The trees would be over 200 years old now. These are just a few words here that barely begin to tell the story of our contributions throughout this country's history.
