Postcard view of the Montgomery Ward catalog warehouse, which opened in 1908 webapps.cityofchicago.org/landmarksweb/web/landmarkdetail... This giant building still graces the corner of Chicago & Larabee, although it is now converted to condos.
Note the streetcar tracks on both Larabee and Chicago, and the presence of a Milwaukee Road passenger train. Also, there are freight sidings entering the building off Larabee; in my time this was still active freight trackage but these sidings had been removed and that corner of the building converted to a glassed-in entrance lobby.

This early Smith & Wesson rimfire revolver is engraved, "Capt. S.F. Willard presented by the Scranton Guards." Capt. Willard died at Antietam 9/17/1862 (see flic.kr/p/MdTM4J). The revolver carries serial number 3346 on the butt and has patent dates of 4/3/1856, 7/3/1859 and 12/18/1860 on the revolver drum. According to www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_..., "In 1856 Smith & Wesson formed their second partnership to produce a small revolver designed to fire the Rimfire cartridge they patented in August of 1854. This revolver was the first successful fully self-contained cartridge revolver available in the world. Smith & Wesson secured patents for the revolver to prevent other manufacturers from producing a cartridge revolver - giving the young company a very lucrative business."

Hello, I am John Kuna. I have designed and painted 24 murals in the Islington neighborhood. It was a privilege and a unique opportunity for one artist to be entrusted with such a large body of work. So I always felt that it was my responsibility to ensure that while the entire project had a sense of continuity, the individual works should be as varied as possible. I almost wanted the murals to look as if they were painted by different artists. Each design started with a basic theme. It was usually a slice of local history. Whether it was epic or common, it was up to me to make it interesting.
In the case of this mural, the idea was to commemorate the site of the original Methodist church. The manse of the church, or minister’s residence, still had its foundations within the building on which the mural was to be painted. I therefore thought it might be interesting to design the piece as if the walls of the current building were stripped away, revealing a cross section view of the manse interior as it appeared in the 1880s. Now, this sort of cutaway design is not exactly new in mural art. I therefore wanted the mural to communicate something more and I decided that the piece could also demonstrate, almost anatomically, how a Victorian house was constructed and how it functioned. So I researched every historic landmark home in Toronto as well as building practises of the time. Then I made the painting to scale. That is to say a 2x4 floorboard will actually measure 2x4 inches in the mural.
To provide a story within the artwork, a scene was chosen in which the Reverend Richard Bowles and his wife hosted the ladies of the Manse Committee which regularly gathered at the residence to supervise its upkeep. The Reverend is shown having tea with the Committee Chair while his wife prepares custard in the kitchen. Meanwhile the other Committee members are conducting a white-gloved inspection of the premises. While working on this piece, perhaps the greatest compliment to my painting skills was when someone would occasionally interrupt my work in a panic to ask what “happened to the wall”, because as they walked by, they actually believed, only if for a few seconds, that the wall had indeed collapsed and I was a mason working to fix it. Out of all the Islington murals, this is still the piece I receive the most compliments on.

You will meet people who won't understand you, who won't understand why you are the way you are. They will have the feeling that they have to judge you and talk about you behind your back.
They don't know that everything comes to you at a higher level.
For those of you who ask the right questions, the universe will answer and send you people and situations so that you can experience what it means to be you.
Don't be angry with them because you know why they are doing it. Remember when people can't understand something they will categorize it they will try to put you in a box but you have never fit into a box because you know and have learned that life is constantly changing. So let them create their own karma.
Some will hate you for your gifts and hurt you, we know you tolerate a lot because you realize that they are only hurting you out of their own woundedness of soul.
However, never forget that you have it in your hands what you want to allow and what not.
Always be aware that the brighter your light is, the greater the shadows you will face.
We remind you that if they could only see for 5 minutes what you see and have ever seen. Feel what you feel and have ever felt be sure some of them would have collapsed under the weight but you are stronger you have done things that no one else has done because you are doing your shadow work and we see you we are with you.
You will see wath the destiny has in store for them and if they will be honored to walk a part of their path in your shoes.
We see and know what your journey has cost you and yes we know it was all for you because you said YES to what was and is to come.
It fills us with joy and proudness how you embrace each process as you go with the flow of life and sway with the waves of the tides.
You create and hold the space of possibilities.
Because you my love are the guardian and keeper of Mighty Portals.
Be certain you are not alone we have sent you your soul mates some have already reached you and others will answer the call of their soul. Bismillah

In this series of pictures I want to give you all something the feeling of freedom of letting go of daydreaming the feeling of the higher self that is world-spanning.
Do you know the feeling of being completely detached from everything? The feeling of just letting go you just let go of everything you let it go no matter if it is a thought or a situation you let go of the old you let go of the old you spread your wings and finally start to fly.
Do you feel it?
Do you feel the air that fills your lungs and gives your wings lift?
I am taking you on a journey through time and we are sending an important message in both the past and the future so hold on tight because it is going to be turbulent.
My message to my past self and my future self:
Life is a marathon so don't give it your all right from the start keep your pace you will still need energy towards the end when life goes uphill pull it through grab the uphill and keep the focus looking forward and yes you will overtake people you will leave people behind but you don't have to worry about them they will go their own way. Believe in yourself! And when you realize that your lungs are burning your body is heavy and you want to give up pull it through!!!
Because I believe in you and I have done so since I existed in so many reincarnations in which I accompanied you and was at your side . . .
So many lifetimes we have been through together to arrive here and now I know you feel it you can see your past lives you can feel them and accept them . . everything is happening now you are the one in all the multiverses the one who will change everything and yes it will take everything from you and you will make it you will climb every obstacle you will change all the bad into good because you are the born alchemist . . you will be the one who sees everything from a different point of view yes many will not understand you do not let this discourage you stand up for yourself you know your ancestors stand united behind you you will always see the light and you will be the light you will be a bright light to so many people in their darkest days you will give them the strength and courage to walk your soul path . . .

A female red-tailed hawk sits on the breakwall in Port Colborne early in the morning. Two female hawks were put on the breakwall to protect the local tern colony from herring and ring-billed gulls. The Port Colborne and District Conservation Club hired a local falconer to help protect the colony, which they look after.

I hadn't ever been to this part of the city before, but it's a great location for river and L-Train shots.
I made this with a Canon 7d and 15-85 using a Vanguard Tripod.

Last year Vitaliy P and This charming broad began to post a series of awesome daytime long exposures. Even cooler, instead of buying an ND filter, they rolled their own using welding glass! You can check out the photos they've taken with it here and here.
So when I wanted to take some daytime long exposures with my Rolleicord the other week, I went to Lowes and picked up a piece of welding glass for $1.98 USD (link).
This was shade 10 welding glass, which is supposed to be the equivalent of about 12 stops, but the photos I took came out underexposed so I'm guessing the one I have is more like 13 - 15 stops. A good excuse to take more photos and find out... I'm glad this one came out underexposed though.
I have a couple of pictures of my Rolleicord / welding glass rig in the comments below.
UPDATE: The underexposure was due to me not accounting for reciprocity failure, not the welding glass shade # being inaccurate.
Hiding the eyes makes you invisible, cause you can't see. Being invisible makes you invincible!
The whitish haze above her head is not a poor Photoshop exercise but a huge white demon across the road hiding in the bokeh of the background: Green girl against white zombie!

One thing about the Willis Tower, it is pretty much visible anywhere downtown Chicago. I still can't get used to calling it "Willis Tower". It will always be the "Sears Tower" to me.

Last night I needed to go pick up some new mascara, so I stopped into Dillard's as Estee Lauder was having a "free gift" promotion. I've pretty much used their makeup almost exclusively since I've been I guess around 16. I have extremely sensitive skin, and I don't have problems with their products creating havoc on my face. For the last six months or so, I've been straying to other brands, and my pores went on strike - trying to recreate ages 13-15.
I was looking for a new foundation (Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup SPF 10 in "bone"), and the woman put it on me with this foundation brush. Now, maybe I'm the last woman in the world who hasn't used one of these, but I was hooked. Completely and utterly hooked. The makeup looked airbrushed on - but was a much lighter application than when I put it on with my fingertips.
So yes, I got suckered into buying a $30 makeup brush last night... but I love it. My skin is actually horrifically broken out right now, and you can't tell at all (no blurring this shot out). The little lines around my eyes - hidden.
This may well be the best $30 I've ever spent.

Glaube an dich! Und wenn du merkst das deine Lunge brennt dein Körper schwer wird und du am liebsten aufgeben möchtest zieh es durch!!!
Den ich glaube an dich und das habe ich schon getan seit ich existiere in so vielen Reinkarnationen in denen ich dich begleitet habe und an deiner Seite war . . .
So viele Leben haben wir gemeinsam gemeistert um im hier und heute an zu kommen ich weiss du spürst es du kannst deine vergangen Leben sehen du kannst sie spüren und nimmst sie an. . . alles geschieht jetzt du bist die Eine in all den Multiversen die Eine die alles verändern wird und ja es wird dir alles abverlangen und du wirst es schaffen du wirst jedes Hindernis erklimmen du wirst all das schlechte in gutes verwandeln den du bist die geborene Alchemistin. . . du wirst die eine sein die alles aus einem anderen Blickwinkel siehst ja viele werden dich nicht verstehen lass dich davon nicht entmutigen Steh für dich ein den du weisst deine Ahnen stehen geschlossen hinter dir du wirst immer das Licht sehen und du wirst das Licht sein du wirst so vielen Menschen in ihren dunkelsten Tagen ein helles licht sein wirst ihnen die Kraft und den Mut geben Ihren Seelenweg zu gehen . . .
Ich sage dir du hast den eisernen willen alles zu schaffen was du dir erträumst also Glaube an dich vertraue deinem Höheren selbst . . . tu was du liebst folge deinem Herzen und habe das tiefe vertraue in dich selbst in deine Stärke und in dein grosses Herz . . .
Den das was dich ausmacht ist das was die Menschen die dir in deinem Leben begegnen Lieben du Zeigst ihnen etwas das Sie nicht kennen du Zeigst Ihnen ihr eigenes inneres ich zeigst ihnen wie es sein könnte und ja manche werden schreiend davon laufen manche werden dich hassen manche werden dir schlimme Dinge an tun und du wirst daran Wachsen durch jede Erfahrung durch jede Verletzung wirst du reifen bis du eines Tages zurück blickst und das gesamt Bild siehst . . .
Denn ganz egal wo du gerade bist deine Vergangenheit hat dich für das gestärkt was gerade kommt und was noch kommen mag. . . .

On the evening of August 17th, I was headed out the front door to take photos of the moon. To my surprise this sweet little tree frog was clinging to the glass on our storm door! I was able to place it gently in a clear box and create a temporary habitat, so that we could enjoy observing it for a short time and take some photos. I even caught some bugs for it, which it readily ate. The frog is called a Gray Tree Frog (Hyla versicolor) and very seldom leaves the trees it lives in, usually only to mate, but this is not their breeding time. I read that they may be attracted to porch lights, where they can easily find insects. It was released with no harm done. (Size of this frog is only 1 5/16th inches long and 3/4 inches wide (measured with legs folded).

Apparently, this is called a "single leaf bascule bridge". Regardless of what it's called, it looks rickety.
According to Wikipedia:
At the time of its opening in 1908 it was the world's longest and heaviest bascule bridge. Previous bridges on the same site included the first bridge to cross the Chicago River, Chicago's first railroad bridge, and one of first all-steel bridges in the United States.
Apparently, it's been unused since 2000 when the newspaper moved all of its printing off site. Fortunately, this was made a historical marker in 2007 so you don't have to hurry to got get a picture.
This is actually 5 HDR images stitched together using CS4. Original HDR images were made using a Canon 7d and 15-85 with a Vanguard Tripod.

The prototype of T 5 unified tram series was developed and produced by the tram builder ČKD Tatra in Prague and styled by František Kardaus who self-built a scale model including a detailed interior for approval committees. The model nicknamed the "greenhouse" and the manufacturer used it also for building two KT4 prototypes for the GDR. Six entries of T 5 were entered into the Industrial Property Office database:

The prototype of four axle, twin-section articulated tramcar with corrugated sides, rectangular headlamps and patented mechanism for forced cornering of the articulated cabinet. Styled by František Kardaus, developed and produced custom to order of the German Democratic Republic by the tram builder ČKD Tatra in Prague. The industrial design was filed on July 10, 1973, registered and made public under number 7998 on October 29, 1976 by the Czechoslovak Industrial Property Office : isdv.upv.cz/webapp/resdb.print_detail.det?pspis=PVZ/7998&...
Two prototypes were tested in Prague, then exported to Potsdam and regularly operated until 1989. The exporter Pragoinvest delivered 1042 trams KT4 and KT4t to 12 cities in the GDR from 1974 to 1990. In addition, 686 of these trams were exported to the USSR and Yugoslavia.
This early Smith & Wesson rimfire revolver is engraved, "Capt. S.F. Willard presented by the Scranton Guards." Capt. Willard died at Antietam 9/17/1862 (see flic.kr/p/MdTM4J). The revolver carries serial number 3346 on the butt and has patent dates of 4/3/1856, 7/3/1859 and 12/18/1860 on the revolver drum. According to www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_..., "In 1856 Smith & Wesson formed their second partnership to produce a small revolver designed to fire the Rimfire cartridge they patented in August of 1854. This revolver was the first successful fully self-contained cartridge revolver available in the world. Smith & Wesson secured patents for the revolver to prevent other manufacturers from producing a cartridge revolver - giving the young company a very lucrative business."
