Over the weekend I made a pair of modeling key lights for ~$35 a piece (thx home depot).
This is my first time playing with four lights at the same time. As you can tell from the picture, I clearly know what I'm doing. ;)
For those of you interested in building your own always-on modeling studio lights, here are a few words on how I build mine:
Do it yourself modeling key lights
Light fixture and lamps:
BE CAREFUL, light fixtures come with bare wires and require an electrician to install. They do not come ready to plug straight into the wall. I am an electrical engineer and know how to hook these up. Please do NOT do this yourself if you don't know what you are doing because you can get hurt and end up in the hospital.
For the light fixture, I bought the Lithonia Lighting, 2 lamps, T8 electronic ballast for ~$17 at Home Depot. Similar to this one but the two lamp model.
For the lamps, you need two T8 Fluorescent lamps per light fixture. Buy the T8 lamps instead of T12, here's why: T8 are more energy efficient, better color rendering, longer lasting, faster start time, no flickering and are cooler than T12. As far as color temperature, it is up to you to decide what kind of effect you want. I chose the 6500K daylight lamp, which is extreme white and is generally used in studios. Home Depot usually has the lights on display so you can see the different colors each of them produce before you buy.
Stand:
Since you have no assistants, you need a way to hold the light vertically. This is where you need to be a little creative. My solution to this was pretty cheap. I bought the cheapest floor lamp available at home depot ($11). I chose a floor lamp because they usually have sturdy stands, which is what I am looking for to keep my light fixture in place. Also they do not take much space, and that's great for small studios. Install only the pole to the base and now you have your stand ready.
Here's the tricky part, how to install the fixture to the stand. You may laugh at my solution but it works fine. You need a hose clamp, an L-clamp, a screw and a pair of wire ties. Place the L-clamp inside the hose clamp and tighten up as hard as you can to the pole. Then place the light fixture on top of the L-clamp, and screw it in to keep it from moving around. Then use the wire ties to secure both ends of the fixture to the stand.
That's it. The above was the best solution I could come up with that day. If you find another way to hook things up (better, sturdier stand, less money), please do leave a comment so we can all learn from you.

This early Smith & Wesson rimfire revolver is engraved, "Capt. S.F. Willard presented by the Scranton Guards." Capt. Willard died at Antietam 9/17/1862 (see flic.kr/p/MdTM4J). The revolver carries serial number 3346 on the butt and has patent dates of 4/3/1856, 7/3/1859 and 12/18/1860 on the revolver drum. This revolver was the first successful fully self-contained cartridge revolver available in the world. Smith & Wesson secured patents for the revolver to prevent other manufacturers from producing a cartridge revolver - giving the young company a very lucrative business."

Finch West Station
Finch West Station is a remarkable collaboration between London-based artist Bruce McLean and architects Will Alsop and Richard Stevens. Alsop, who passed away in 2018 was a renowned English architect who also designed Pioneer Village Station, and the iconic Sharp Centre at OCAD, also known as the Table Top. From the luscious yellow tiling on the platform walls, red hexagonal tiles in the corridors, zebra-striped flooring and exterior and the tinted windows, this exuberant display of colour and line is meant to cheer us up. The concrete columns underground reference 6000 year old Minorcan pillars that would have supported the roofs of underground houses. Follow the signs for Buses and exit the station. Outside, notice the elevated substation facility on the second floor which overhangs the main entrance, and is highlighted by a glowing red grille at the north end of the seemingly bar-coded subway building.
On the side of the station, we see the large sculptural concrete forms supporting the building: these reference Greek caryatids, sculpted female figures serving as architectural supports taking the place of a column, most famously used at the Acropolis in Athens. Walk around to the bus bay. Once again we see strong sculptural columns this time supporting the canopy which spreads out above like a palm tree. If you’re finding it hard to tell where exactly the architecture stops and the art begins, that is by design. As artist Bruce McLean explains: “The sculptures are intended to be part of the structure and fabric of the building and should in a way be invisible.”
Bruce McLean, is a Scottish sculptor, painter and performance artist. He was Head of Graduate Painting at The Slade School of Fine Art London, and has exhibited at the Tate Gallery, The Modern Art Gallery in Vienna and Museum of Modern Art in Oxford.

On the nights when I can't sleep, I cast my nets to see what the universe and my heart people have to say.
My heart people are always amazed at how I know things just like that, even though they don't tell me anything and sometimes even have no contact with me for weeks or months.

In den Nächten, in denen ich nicht schlafen kann, werfe ich meine Netze aus, um zu sehen was das Universum und meine Herzmenschen zu sagen haben.
Meine Herzmenschen wundern sich immer wieder, wie ich Dinge einfach so weiss, obwohl sie mir nichts sagen und sogar manchmal über Wochen oder Monate keinen Kontakt mit mir haben.
Ich sage Ihnen dann immer wieder mit Freude das ich sie fühle und ja auch das ist manchmal kein Zuckerschlecken. Ganz viele sind sich nicht bewusst, dass das, was sie aussenden auf irgendeine Art auch beim Gegenüber ankommt. Das Universum findet immer einen weg.
Ich möchte euch mal zeigen, wie so ein Channeling wärend eines Seelenprozess sich anhört und dies ist nur ein Ausschnitt von einer Nacht manche Prozesse dauern Jahre, wenn nicht Jahrzehnte das ist kein Rennen es ist ein Marathon, deswegen ist es auch wichtig, dass man sich gut um sich selbst kümmert und sich zwischen durch auch Zeit für sich selbst nimmt.

Untitled by Moises Frank: At this point talking to black squares on zoom became a normal part of my everyday cycle. Rinse and repeat, program after program. However, this group opened a window of fresh air. A rather unlikely amalgamation of people from different walks gathered to explore public art and specifically mural making. As the weeks progressed, I would soon be able to connect familiar voices to new smiles turning their cameras on for the session.
I was tuning in from my small but cozy apartment on Weston Road. We discussed in great depth the fundamentals of colour, composition and murals we thought were whack whilst drinking tea and listening to some chill lofi music. When the time came to start designing this mural we had lengthy debates on how to represent something without it being too obvious or too tacky.
We found ourselves contemplating a laundromat. Sort of an odd place to represent diversity, however the more we conceptualized the more meaning started to unfold. I thought about the laundromat in my building. A truly communal space. A space where you would meet neighbours you didn’t know you had.
I thought about the laundromat my mom went to and ended up working at in Rexdale. I thought about the people that went there, the different cultures, the different scents, different fabrics, different stories intersecting in this common place to clean; to carry and to care for these articles that in some way are an outer representation of something internal. We may have dressed differently or used different soap, but this was a uniquely human task. Everybody needs to wash their underwear.
The following weeks we shared stories of clothes and materials that were personal and meaningful to us and brainstormed different ways to represent our collection. We imagined a clothesline that held and united our diverse fabrics and patterned clothing as symbolic flags waving proudly together.
It’s deeply satisfying to reflect on the small black squares becoming a small window into someone's home and deeper yet a small window into someone's being. I am honoured to share space and manifest ideas into spray painted murals.

Something tells me you're not unlocking this door with the key of imagination. After the recent success of other Flickr contacts at posting their shots from the Studios, I decided to try my hand at a Tower of Terror shot for today.
I spent a lot of time back in this area on our recent trip. Part of it may have been me scraping off the rust, but I wasn't pleased with most of these shots. I don't think I made the most of the UWA, and I wish I had done some things differently. I like this shot alright, but I feel it doesn't bring anything new to the table (plus there's all sorts of odd unintentional distortion in it).
This shot is a two exposure HDR merged in Photoshop CS3 with the layers masked back on top of the HDR, and some more stuff done to it. No tone mapping was performed. Much time was spent making the saturation correct in the Tower.

Saw that quote on a T-Shirt and thought it was hilarious.
This is an image from last winter shot near N Canal St and W Kinzie St. I went out with several Flickr friends and had a great time - even if it was freezing.
There are a lot of great shots to find here, whether it be the Chicago and Northwestern Rail Bridge, the L Trains, or the riverwalk.

Corinthian columns and capitals of the former bank building at King and Bay in Toronto. Built in 1912 by architect Carrere and Hastings of New York and Eustace Bird of Toronto. The building was demolished in 1966.

The white marble marvel is composed of a stepped stage backed by an arrangement of grand Corinthian columns, archways and ornate panels.
The Greek Theatre is made out of salvaged pieces of the former Bank of Toronto building on the Southwest corner of King and Bay streets, which stood where Mies Van Der Rohe’s TD Centre now stands. Constructed in 1913 and demolished in 1965 the neoclassical building was designed by the New York City architectural firm Carrere and Hastings, who designed the New York Public Library, and Toronto based Eustace G. Bird. Inspired by the historical Paris Stock Market—Palais Brongniart— the Bank of Toronto was a grand building; the plinth/base of the colonnade alone was taller than the people walking past it.
But this isn’t just a reconstruction - it is a complete reimagination! The elements were rearranged, shortened and adapted into a new structure designed by renowned Canadian architect Ron Thom in the 1980s. Unlike other artifacts at the park, this theatre is not just a folly, it is an actual working stage with productions throughout the year. And it’s the perfect place to get your wedding photos or that perfect Guild Park selfie!

The Awakening
A moment of quiet reflection, Mother Earth sleeps, regaining her strength. Lately, replenishing her energies has become more difficult; her circulatory system has been plagued with thick clots, blocking the flow of nutrients and impeding her from cleansing toxins from her system. The creatures that depend on her are starting to feel the illness themselves.
The oceans, her lungs, produce most of the oxygen consumed on Mother Earth, and along with the forests, her waters are essential in sustaining mammal life. A whale swims across her lungs, but there are signs of contamination, and this giant ocean mammal must be wary of its course. The oceans have become the bearers of plastics and pollution. With pH levels changing and oceans becoming more acidic, even coral reefs are disappearing. An estimated 4,000 fish species, and about 25 percent of marine life depend on coral reefs, not to mention that an estimated 500 million people earn their livelihoods from the ecosystems sustained by coral reefs. Without immediate and prioritized climate action, the impact humans will have on the oceans will create profound imbalances.
The health of our oceans is dependent on our ability to break our addiction to consumerism. Markets establish factories in developing countries, with less regulation and cheaper labour, child labour. In the era of “me, myself and I”, of social media likes and influencers, disposable fashion goes unquestioned. The global textile industry discharges tens of thousands of tons of toxic dye into Mother Earth’s waters. Cutting, dyeing and finishing textile processes contribute to the release of microplastics, and the main source of primary microplastics is synthetic clothing, which now account for 35 percent of microplastics in the ocean.
(First person) Mother, we pray with you. You grace us with your beauty, and we stray from your love. We walk through troubled times, and tread heavily about, stomping on your bones, fracturing and bruising you. Forgetting our brothers and sisters. And yet, still you hold us, remember us, feed us. Your beauty and wisdom determined to awaken us. We pray for healing of the lands, waters and air, and are reminded that we are one with you and all of your living creatures. Inhale, exhale.
(First person) And as we breathe our prayer, we get caught in the thickness of yellow grey clouds. Smog and viruses; air contamination and illness.
As our ancient but fragile ecosystem is affected, we wear these masks. As air pollution increases, our behaviour is impacted. Air pollution is known to penetrate deep into our lungs and cardiovascular system, causing diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections. Air contamination continues to rise, impacting economies and quality of life. It is estimated that nine out of 10 people breathe air containing high levels of pollutants, and this dirty air is responsible for about seven million deaths globally per year. Climate change is expected to have a substantial effect on the burden of infectious diseases, including making conditions more favourable to their spread to new territories due to warmer climates, including Lyme disease, malaria and dengue.
(First person) Mother, we are surrounded by industry, outdated transportation modes, coal power plants and fuel usage, increasing floods and droughts, food insecurity and growing need for mass migrations – human and animal alike. For now, we shall wear these masks, and work towards a shift to renewable energies can lead us to clean airs once more.
In the distance, cries from the forests are muzzled by the ripping thunder of chainsaws. The old growth in Western Canada, the Amazon rainforest to the south; trees and their ancient wisdom are being cut down at massive rates. Animals lose their homes, protection against flooding and soil erosion is lost; local environmental racism hits hard. Nearby, a Deer Spirit stands in the tar sands, warning fellow animals to be cautious of toxic dangers that are seeping into the soils and waters, causing rare cancers and displacing communities. But extraction continues in order to satisfy our fossil fuel addiction, and profit goes up, and the intangible stock market grows.
The warning signs are here. Scientists have spoken for decades. Who will listen? Who will be brave enough to consider future generations in a time that only honours short term gains? Climate change has arrived, and it is up to us to be the protagonists in creating a sustainable future.

About the Artist
I would not have expected to see this painting in Lithuania, but instead at a gallery in Seville or Madrid. The artist's biography, which appears below, might explain why this very Spanish image was produced in northern Europe. However, be warned that Google did the translation, so the text is pretty fractured.
The Trinitarian church in Kamieniec Podolski gave an impulse to initiate the Trinitarian painter , Johann Prechtl (in the convent of Joseph of St. Theresa, 1737-1799).
Probably the earliest among those was known for the order of Friars Minor "Observants" (Bernardines) in Dubin, a small town located near Beresteczko.
Prechtl did not finish the decoration of the church, probably a moravian artist, Joseph Plitz, after the fire of the monastery.
The paintings for the Trintianian Church of the Holy Trinity in Beresteczko, where the Prechtl settles down, were in the second half of the 18th century. These were the polychromes on the walls of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.
The interior of the three - nave Church of the Holy Trinity in Brahiłów, finances by Farnciszek Saleza Potocki and completed in 1778, included the illusionistic paintings by Johann Prechtl, which constitutes one of the finest works if art in eastern parts of Poland.
In the years 1776-1778 he created a large series of the polychromes covering the temple and its chapels (The well-known scenes The Adoration of the Shepherd, The Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, The Ransoming of the Slaves from the Pogans by John of Malta and Felix of Valois and The Healing of a Sick by Saint Cajetan).
The polychrome in the church in Iwanków (Andruszówka region, Zhytomyr) ha also been attributed to the convent artist by J. Kowalczyk.
The entire church was painted al. Fresco including five illusionistic altars. On the only surviving photographic image of the temple, which is enclosed in a quadrature.
However, nothing is known about the murals in the Dominican Church, Podolia, which was turned into the Czacki family's palace in Boremel ( Equal region).
Prechtl supposedly created painting decoration al. Fresco and paintings for the Kamieniec Podolski Cathedral as well as the archival documents, the Trinitarian church.
According to the archival documents, the Trinitarian church of St Michael the Archangel and the Conversion of St. Paul in Lutsk was "all painted inside of the colors and images", which were partially destroyed, especially in the chapels, during the march of Napoleon's army in 1812.
In the view of the archives, we can be suppose to be Prechtl's paintings in the two-storey side altars. After the dissolution of the order in 1845, the paintings depicting St. John of Nepomuk were moved from the Trinitarian church to the Lutsk Cathedral.
From the altars created by the Trinitarian artist one pianting survived. Meant for the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Antokol, Vilnius (moved to Dailes Muziejus, now in the Museum of the Lithuanian Art in Vilnius), and the Baptist of the Conception of the Order of the Trinitarians, after 1770).

About Beatified Michael of All Saints
Saint Michael de Sanctis (Catalan: Miquel dels Sants) (29 September 1591 – 10 April 1625), sometimes called Michael of the Saints,[1] was a Discalced Trinitarian born in Vic, a city of Catalonia, Spain.
Born Michael Argemir, at the age of twelve, Michael de Sanctis came to Barcelona and asked to be received into the monastery of the Trinitarians there. After a three-year novitiate, he took his vows at that order's monastery of St. Lambert at Zaragoza in 1607. After meeting a Discalced Trinitarian one day, he felt drawn to that congregation's more austere lifestyle and, after much deliberation and the permission of his superior, he entered the congregation of the Discalced Trinitarians at Madrid as a novice. He then took his vows at Alcalá, became a priest, and was twice elected superior of the monastery at Valladolid, where he died.
During his life, Michael de Sanctis led a life of prayer and mortification. He was devout towards the Holy Eucharist, and is said to have been experienced ecstasies several times during Consecration.
Michael De Sanctis was beatified by Pope Pius VI on 24 May 1779 and later canonizedby Pope Pius IX on 8 June 1862. His feast day is celebrated on 10 April. In images, he is usually depicted kneeling before an altar where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed.
The municipality of Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec, Canada, is named in his honor.[2]
This is my obsessive way of keeping my son's bento lunch accessories organized and within reach when I'm packing lunch in the morning. The plastic boxes on the microwave (from a Japanese dollar store) hold less-used things, while the wooden under-cabinet shelf with drawers holds the most frequently used accessories. The wall shelf with drawers is from Ikea's FÖRHÖJA line -- the wood drawers hold more than the glass drawer option (which were pointed in the back and didn't fully utilize available space). Part of the Hitchman Street development in Fenton, this shop and adjacent terraces date back to 1890.
Built by William Meath Baker as an addition to his Victoria Square development (to the left). Hitchman Street was named after William Meath Baker's aunt (his father's sister) whose married name was Hitchman.
Praise should be given for the amount of ornamentation incorporated into the design with particular attention to the panels above the windows and around the pediment and gables.
The factory in the background is James Kent (Ceramic Materials) Limited which was formerly W. Baker and Co., although William apparently took no part in the family pottery business.
The main road to the foreground is Victoria Road leading towards Hanley, whilst Hitchman Street runs off towards the far chimney.

Note the streetcar tracks on both Larabee and Chicago, and the presence of a Milwaukee Road passenger train. Also, there are freight sidings entering the building off Larabee; in my time this was still active freight trackage but these sidings had been removed and that corner of the building converted to a glassed-in entrance lobby.

A female red-tailed hawk sits on the breakwall in Port Colborne early in the morning. Two female hawks were put on the breakwall to protect the local tern colony from herring and ring-billed gulls. The Port Colborne and District Conservation Club hired a local falconer to help protect the colony, which they look after.

This early Smith & Wesson rimfire revolver is engraved, "Capt. S.F. Willard presented by the Scranton Guards." Capt. Willard died at Antietam 9/17/1862 (see flic.kr/p/MdTM4J). The revolver carries serial number 3346 on the butt and has patent dates of 4/3/1856, 7/3/1859 and 12/18/1860 on the revolver drum. According to www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_..., "In 1856 Smith & Wesson formed their second partnership to produce a small revolver designed to fire the Rimfire cartridge they patented in August of 1854. This revolver was the first successful fully self-contained cartridge revolver available in the world. Smith & Wesson secured patents for the revolver to prevent other manufacturers from producing a cartridge revolver - giving the young company a very lucrative business."

Hello, I am John Kuna. I have designed and painted 24 murals in the Islington neighborhood. It was a privilege and a unique opportunity for one artist to be entrusted with such a large body of work. So I always felt that it was my responsibility to ensure that while the entire project had a sense of continuity, the individual works should be as varied as possible. I almost wanted the murals to look as if they were painted by different artists. Each design started with a basic theme. It was usually a slice of local history. Whether it was epic or common, it was up to me to make it interesting.
In the case of this mural, the idea was to commemorate the site of the original Methodist church. The manse of the church, or minister’s residence, still had its foundations within the building on which the mural was to be painted. I therefore thought it might be interesting to design the piece as if the walls of the current building were stripped away, revealing a cross section view of the manse interior as it appeared in the 1880s. Now, this sort of cutaway design is not exactly new in mural art. I therefore wanted the mural to communicate something more and I decided that the piece could also demonstrate, almost anatomically, how a Victorian house was constructed and how it functioned. So I researched every historic landmark home in Toronto as well as building practises of the time. Then I made the painting to scale. That is to say a 2x4 floorboard will actually measure 2x4 inches in the mural.
To provide a story within the artwork, a scene was chosen in which the Reverend Richard Bowles and his wife hosted the ladies of the Manse Committee which regularly gathered at the residence to supervise its upkeep. The Reverend is shown having tea with the Committee Chair while his wife prepares custard in the kitchen. Meanwhile the other Committee members are conducting a white-gloved inspection of the premises. While working on this piece, perhaps the greatest compliment to my painting skills was when someone would occasionally interrupt my work in a panic to ask what “happened to the wall”, because as they walked by, they actually believed, only if for a few seconds, that the wall had indeed collapsed and I was a mason working to fix it. Out of all the Islington murals, this is still the piece I receive the most compliments on.

Last year Vitaliy P and This charming broad began to post a series of awesome daytime long exposures. Even cooler, instead of buying an ND filter, they rolled their own using welding glass! You can check out the photos they've taken with it here and here.
So when I wanted to take some daytime long exposures with my Rolleicord the other week, I went to Lowes and picked up a piece of welding glass for $1.98 USD (link).
This was shade 10 welding glass, which is supposed to be the equivalent of about 12 stops, but the photos I took came out underexposed so I'm guessing the one I have is more like 13 - 15 stops. A good excuse to take more photos and find out... I'm glad this one came out underexposed though.
I have a couple of pictures of my Rolleicord / welding glass rig in the comments below.
UPDATE: The underexposure was due to me not accounting for reciprocity failure, not the welding glass shade # being inaccurate.
We went out with some Flickr friends and had a great time shooting Chicago.
I hadn't ever been to this part of the city before, but it's a great location for river and L-Train shots.
I made this with a Canon 7d and 15-85 using a Vanguard Tripod.
