Exploratory python webapp setup in 10m
Sometimes I just want to explore an idea quickly without the kitchen sink. I need something python based (base libraries) without having to hack .httaccess files, download apache and configure it. This rules out django even webpy.
Testing my idea won't be the final implementation. I want to be able to quickly create a prototype. This is what matters most - being able to quickly test the idea myself, then redeploy to appengine, django or another web stack.
Bottle allows me to do this.
You can read more about the Bottle framework here. Previously I've used webpy but setting this up requires (for me) apache then configuring .htaccess and apache config files.
Not now.
Running the app - note all thats needed:
- installing via sudo python setup.py install
- place the bottle.py and your code (test.py) in a dir
- run python test.py
No external webserver, mapping of directory paths etc.

I don’t really consider photos taken over pints of Guinness in Red Star to be pro-level shooting, but I thought these came out well and captured a nice moment in time.
More to the point I am shocked at how clean they look considering that they were shot at ISO 6400. I know that some folks looks down on the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 as being neither the cheep starter prime or the fancy L-series f/1.2 but honestly it has produced some great pictures for me.
Of course, after these shots were taken, several of the liquid variety of shots were also taken and things sort of went downhill from there. But, like I said, I liked how they turned out.
It was a little too mellow of a night at Red Star for my fiduciary tastes but it gave us room to grab a booth and carry-on largely unmolested by a rowdy crowd. All told, it was a nice night out with friends, even if Luca somehow ended up in Liz’s scarf and later passed out into a bear-like slumber on my couch. Clearly, a good time was had by all.
For those who fancy a little data about how the shots were done, they were shot at the aforementioned ISO 6400 on a Canon 5D MKII with the also aforementioned Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. They were processed from RAW in Aperture then put through Nik’s Color Efex Pro 4 and Nik’s Dfine anti-noise software. This was one of the rare times when Dfine didn’t automatically select the areas to de-noise but they cleaned up nicely with a little manual massaging.

I share an office with two individuals from South Korea so we thought it would be fun during the 2012 olympics to track each countries medal count. We started off simply updating the numbers on our dry-erase board. I thought it would be more fun to develop a web tool that would update without me needing to edit the html page each time a new medal was earned. Using an API generated by the London 2012 Olympics website, I was able to parse a JSON data feed to dynamically load the medal counts in real time, automatically.

MIT has an exhibit called Metropath(ologies) and this webapp called Personas is a single part of it. It builds a profile about you based on internet searches and visualises it in a sort of a DNA Form.
