Fog resulted in spider webs covered with droplets

An early morning web with a touch of dew

Mitzpe Hadar, Israel

2.10.14.. loved the colours of this web on littlest F's swing.. it felt properly cold this morning though!

One morning last week I noticed 3 works of art in my yard... Spiderwebs!

I'm not crazy about spiders but I do love to admire their work! There's no denying that what they do is simply amazing!!!

For those who watched 1960s US cartoons, this lyric will be a reminder...

Spiderman, Spiderman,

Does whatever a spider can

Spins a web, any size,

Catches thieves just like flies

Look Out!

Here comes the Spiderman.

Lots of webs in the garden at the moment, but precious few spiders. They're probably all behind me...

I was fascinated by this orb weaver web's unique, dragonfly-shaped stabilimentum. I've read a few explanations for these conspicuous structures found in some orb weaver webs -- that they make the web more visible to birds, so that birds don't accidentally fly through the web and destroy it; that the stabilimentum silk reflects UV light and attracts prey; or that the structure simply helps hide the spider by disguising its outline. In any case, the structure of this one was interesting.

Happy Webnesday!

This was taken the day after a big rainstorm hit Fort Collins. 3-5 inches of rain per hour for a few hours. The next day brought lots of early morning fog, a rarity in this area.

I guess needs viewing large! Happy Web Wednesday ;0)

FYI. In case you are wondering how an image can have so many views and little or no faves, it's because I changed my permission options once. I lost all my faves on 20 shots, and partial faves on a few others. Flickr glitch I guess.

I saw this little guy working his magic with an intricate web last night. When I checked today, he was gone. I'll look tonight to see if he returns!
