The National Park of Peneda-Gerês is the only Portuguese national park.

It is located in the northeast of the province of Minho, extending until the province of Trás-os-Montes, from the lands of Serra da Peneda to the Serra do Gerês being cut by two major rivers, the Cávado and Lima.

Bordering Galicia has a total area of about 70 300 h2, is considered by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.

A rare and stunning natural beauty, ecological and ethnographic value on the wide variety of fauna (roe deer, wild horses, wolves, birds of prey) and flora (pine, yew, chestnut, oak and various medicinal plants), do one of the National Park the greatest natural attractions of Portugal,

The mountain trails, pilgrimage paths and trails of the Roman road linking the cities of Braga and Astorga, known as Geira are special reference for lovers of hiking.

Os trilhos de montanha, os caminhos de peregrinação e os trechos da estrada romana que ligava as cidades deBraga a Astorga, conhecida como Geira, são referência especial para os caminhantes amantes na natureza.

Seljalandsfoss, South Iceland

Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall in Iceland. It was a waypoint during the first leg of The Amazing Race 6. Seljalandsfoss is situated in between Selfoss and Skógafoss at the road crossing of Route 1 (the Ring Road) with the track going into Þórsmörk. This waterfall of the river Seljalandsá drops 60 metres (200 ft) over the cliffs of the former coastline. It is possible to go behind the waterfall.

A. When it's a Mountain Mile and a Fenland Furlong.

The distance of the Coast to Coast Walk challenge is often disputed. Indeed, it is stated to be 190 miles at the start at St. Bees yet at the finish at Robin Hood's Bay a plaque gives the distance as 192 miles. Now, even flood and neap tides don't make that much difference. Worse still is that recent measurements over the ground, and using GPS waypoint distances, calculate it as more like 220 miles!

The problem is that the route is up hill and down dale. In the Fens you could plan a journey all round Will's mother's and back, measure the distance on a map and be pretty sure that's how far you had to travel. You can see for miles and miles in the Fens and trust things.

Up in those hills, though, you can't trust the weather let alone their deceitful maps. They will tell you Jack & Jill fetch a pail of water,

one mile away,

but Jill'll swear that well's a mile and a quarter.

The image shows a single piece of paper, measuring something like 19cm wide in a and c yet more like 22 in b and d.

This image of my travels in the city was created from the tracks and waypoints from a GPS device which I carried around Greater Mumbai and Vasai-Virar from 2005-2007. The background is a satellite image freely available from Landsat 7 Global Mosaic WMS from the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab. The layers were generated by QGIS, a free and open source client for geographic information systems (GIS).
