I believe if a survey is carried among Christians about what is our most intimate or favourite attribute of our heavenly Father then the majority would choose His comforting nature.

Few months before I came to Canada in late 1999 I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour; I was 16 at the time. Of course as an immigrant from Iraq to Canada I went through what you call “cultural shock”: nothing seemed familiar to me and few things made much sense. One of the hardest things was feeling lonely and completely out of place. Even though I came to Canada with my family and I have my grandmother, uncles, aunts and their families here I still felt something major was missing. That’s when I started talking to God and He seemed to fill this emptiness in my heart and life perfectly. He not only has been my best friend ever since then, but also my only comforter. That’s why I would like to share this wonderful song with you, which has comforted and encouraged me so often. I hope you like it:

Comforter -- Cece Winans

www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcfBMdLbkNM

Faithful friend and father

I've called you through the years.

You've been great physician when sickness lingered near.

Through distressing moments your name is new and sweet

You've become comforter to me.

You are comforter that's who you are to me.

Comforter a name that fits so perfectly.

Peace that passes all understanding

Comforter is who you are to me.

To the grieving family who weeps for loved ones gone.

The pain of separation consumes another home.

On the waves of sorrow

You walk with perfect ease

Comforter is who the whole world needs.

You are comforter that's who you are to me.

Comforter a name that fits so perfectly.

Peace that passes all understanding

Comforter is who you are to me.

Peace giver, Life changer

Joy giver, Peace river

Way maker, Life changer

Peace giver, Joy giver

Not only in times of trials and pain is God presence is needed. Sometimes we just need to feel His love, care and presence. I remember about two years ago I had a dear friend who had asked me to buy her some gifts for Christmas and so I wrote down the list of things she wanted for Christmas and decided to go to the mall. I prayed asking the Holy Spirit to please be my shopping companion because I didn’t like to go shopping or the mall by myself. I spent a couple of hours shopping and it was one of the most intimate times I had with God. I just could feel His presence all around me…I felt like I was walking in a bubble full of God’s presence! Of course, the shopping went perfect, and He even helped me finding the things she wanted, be patient, and enjoy the trip! It was such a comforting feeling to know that even in the “trivial” things of life, such as shopping, we have a companion that will always be there not only for us but also within us.

Another Christian song of mine that deals with God’s care and comfort is this one (sorry, I can’t find an online audio of it):

Someone Who Cares

When the world seems cold and your friends seem few

There is someone who cares for you

When you've tears in your eyes your heart bleeds inside

There is someone who cares for you

Someone to care someone to share all your troubles like no other can do

He'll come down from the skies and brush the tears from your eyes

You're his child and he cares for you

When your disappointments come and you feel so blue

There is someone who cares for you

When you need a friend a friend till the end

There is someone who's a friend to you

I will leave you with those verses:

“Even though I walk

through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.”

(Psalm 23:4)

“I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;

I will guide him and restore comfort to him.”

(Isaiah 57:18)

“As a mother comforts her child,

so will I comfort you;

and you will be comforted over Jerusalem."

(Isaiah 66:13)

”O my Comforter in sorrow,

my heart is faint within me.”

(Jeremiah 8:18)

"Therefore, this is what the LORD

says: 'I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem,' declares the LORD Almighty.

"Proclaim further: This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and choose Jerusalem.' "

(Zechariah 1:16-17)

”Blessed are those who mourn,

for they will be comforted.”

(Matthew 5:4)

"If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

(John 14:15-17)

The God of All Comfort

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

(2 Corinthians 1:3-5)

“For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, 7and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him.”

(2 Corinthians 7:6-7)

“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.”

(Philippians 2:1-2)

I want you to think about someone right now. Not your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife... Think of someone who is like a brother, sister, uncle, aunt or even your parents - mum or dad. or a friend or a MATE of yours. It has to be someone that ticks the following boxes...

- You LOVE and TREASURE them

- You VALUE and RESPECT them

- You would PROTECT them and put yourself in the way of harm for them.

For me, right now...it's my great grandma who looked after me when I was only a toddler... Been thinking about her lately. She's from my mother's side, my grandmother's aunt. She never married and as long as I know has always been single.

So...imagine that person that you're thinking about comes to you saying: "I'm going through something right now. I love you and I need your support" and your response to that is "I love EVERYONE. Everyone matters to me. I'm here to support everyone that needs my help. You are important to me like everyone is" . How do you think they are going to feel? Do you think they are going to feel loved and treasured? Do you think they are going to feel valued and respected? Do you think they will feel protected?

If I said that to my grandma, which, by the way, would have never happened ...I think she'd not only be disappointed but she'd actually be hurt. Grandma died when I was 8 or 9 years old. She was 71. I wish I could talk to her now that I am an adult. I never had the chance to talk to her as an adult. There are a few things I would want to ask her.

Logically, with reasoning at an INTELLECTUAL LEVEL, we can all agree that obviously and without any doubt ALL LIVES MATTER.... But on an EMOTIONAL LEVEL, when a BLACK man (regardless of what kind of human being he was) dies because he was killed by a cop on a video that was shot from a phone on the street, AT THAT MOMENT (when it was all over the media)...I think it is safe to say that BLACK LIVES MATTER.

Chances are...well actually...it's HIGHLY LIKELY that I am MUCH MORE CONSERVATIVE than you...and yet I am saying BLACK LIVES MATTER.

I waited for a bit before posting anything about this. I didn't want to jump to the LOGICAL and OBVIOUS conclusions. I think people have different experiences which need to be respected.

If you're going through something hard in your life right now. I got something for you. I don't normally share CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) which is a sub-genre of rock music... I'm more into hymns and "well-established" songs but I enjoyed this song because of the piano and the build up to the chorus. It was originally written by Sinach - a Nigerian singer - a BLACK woman. From what I understand it has become quite "established" now given the fact that it has been performed by multiple artists and churches. This is my favourite version of the song, it's by Leeland, and it's called "Waymaker". See link below. Enjoy!

Marpha and surrounding area is know nation wide for its apples, pears and apricots. In the 196o's an agricultural project was set up to introduce new types of produce into the region. My guide book briefly talks of Passang Khambache Sherpa and David Snellgrove establishing one small orchard, but my guide explained that JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) was the main thrust to the irrigation projects of the region. Regardless the area is abounding in fruit, and produce. The local farmers take full advantage of the land by using the remaining space the orchards to grow maize and other vegetables. The region is also home to several distilleries which make a rather potent type of apple, pear, or apricote brandy. The community has become rather well off from the project and employ many people from the surrounding areas. There is even a popular song about Marpha and its lovely apples. A success!

Porters making the long walk back to Beni with their guests' loads while their guests conveniently take a jeep back to Jomson from which point they will fly back to Kathmandu.

These porters are likely recruited off the streets of Kathmandu and may have no experience in the high alpine. Quite likely they are just eager to get any job possible and as such are willing to do extremely difficult work, in an extremely dangerous environment. More often than not these brave men and women are under equipped, uninsured and paid in the range of $3-$4 a day while carrying the loads of three, possible more, clients. Clients who paid thousands of dollars for the "trip of a life time".

The path through the hot spring town of Tatopani. This town has benefited quite well from the trekking industry as it is a stop over on many different routes. Many hotels have lavished up their services and most employ kitchen staff trained in Kathmandu. We had arrived just at the beginning of Dashian so all of the children had returned home from their boarding schools in Pokhara and Kathmandu. The village was full of clean and well groomed children. It was actually a bit of a shock.

For us it was a very welcome stop after several days of hard trekking and no rest. We spent an extra day relaxing and soaking in the hot spring. It was great! But it also killed any ambitions of continuing on to Ghorapani for the Poon Hill view. As far as we were concerned the trip had finished here.

Working with children from the Clinton Middle School on two occasions artist Justin Berry tries to find out exactly how much we can learn about a work of art simply by looking at it and opening our eyes. To initiate the project he took children from the school on a field trip to some of the many contemporary art galleries present in their own neighborhood of Chelsea. Looking at shows by artists such as Yayoi Kusama they saw the way that simple elements could provoke powerful reactions in the appropriate context. Based on drawings they made Berry generated a virtual exhibit for his Waymaker Gallery project, using the same software used to produce movies such as Shrek and Toy Story.

Coming back a semester later to work with a new batch of students, Berry asked the children to imagine what they saw as appropriate narratives to describe the show. Giving them books to fill with their stories and videotaping some of their accounts, Berry will combine the text and video on the website of his gallery to display a show where the works are presented not with narratives that explain the images, but with the narratives that the images have inspired.

Justin Berry has created The Waymaker Gallery as a vehicle for reimagining what is possible. The Waymaker Gallery is an imaginary art space that is not bound by the laws of physics or budgetary concerns. A container reshapes whatever it contains; this is true for both art and a glass of water. The Waymaker Gallery is a venue that conforms to the art it exhibits rather than the other way around, adapting to the artist's practice rather than forcing the artist to adapt. Over time the gallery is reshaped even as it is reimagined.

Say the word fatwā and all kinds of people, especially non-Muslims, get stirred up into a tizzy. The most likely reason for that is the failure of Western culture to understand what a fatwā is.

By way of simple explanation, a fatwā is a ruling on Islamic law. In Sunni Islamic belief all fatwā are non-binding.

In Shia Islam the binding nature of a fatwā is largely dependent upon an individual’s relationship with the issuer.

In fact, if a statement does not address something new, it not a fatwā at all. It is sampling a ruling. To add to the confusion, some Muslims consider a fatwā to mean “giving permission” to do something.

Muslims are known to go “fatwā shopping,” from one sheikh to another until they find one who grants them the permission they were looking for.

Part of the problem is that some fatwā are infamous. For instance, the Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwā for kill Salman Rushdie for writing “The Satanic Verses.” In other words, he gave his permission to do it.

Osama bin Laden issued a fatwā that said that Muslims should kill civilians and military personnel from the allied countries in Iraq until the US withdrew its support of Israel and withdrew its forces from Muslim countries.

Now that you know that the fatwā system is absurd, let’s look at something that appeared in the news just a few days ago. It was reported that Iraqi Ayatollah Al Hassani Al Baghdadi had issued a “fatwā” against Iraqi Christians: “Conversion to Islam or death.”

The overriding agenda of Islamic extremists is to kill “the little Satan” (Israel) and bring “the big Satan” (the US) to its knees, on the way to establishing a one world Islamic Caliphate with its capital in Jerusalem. But we should most definitely not be frightened by or scared of the ranting of these Sons of Evil.

We need to be keenly aware of what these men say and do, but our focus should be on the Lord God, the Almighty, the Creator, the Waymaker, the one for whom Israel is the apple of His eye.

Stay faithful. Stay watchful and prayerful. Lean on the everlasting arms of God, and pray for Israel to do the same. He will never, ever allow His people to be destroyed. They may suffer the humiliation and intimidation of rhetoric and rockets, but Israel will endure by the grace of God. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122:6)
