GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 8 July 2017, a 9.8-mile linear walk from Alexandra Palace to Kings Cross, via Highgate, Finsbury Park, Woodberry Wetlands, Canonbury and the Regents Canal, in London. Hertford Union Canal, Old Ford, Tower Hamlets, London. This is a short canal of about 1.5km, joining the Regents Canal to the River Lee Navigation. Here I am looking back towards the lock.

Beatty Memorial Fountain (to Admiral of the Fleet David Richard Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty), Trafalgar Square, Westminster, London SW1 (<(part of a Grade II* listing). By William McMillan, 1948.

 

GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 12 November 2016, a 7.4-mile point-to-point walk to look at various artworks, statues and memorials in parts of the London Borough of Lambeth and City of Westminster in London, including Lambeth, Westminster, Belgravia and Hyde Park. John T led the walk, which was attended by 13 people in total (and a dog). Someries Castle, Hyde, Bedfordshire. All that remains of this site are the gatehouse (incorportaing a chapel and lodge) - the rest is earthworks and the whole site is a scheduled ancient monument (not a listed building). The name of it comes from William de Somery (of Dudley), whose residence stood here in the 13th century, but the building could not have been described as a "castle". It is one of the earliest brick buildings in England.

 

GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 14 April 2018. This was a 9.8-mile circular walk in and around the villages and hamlets of Breachwood Green, Colemans Green, Darleyhall and Wandon End in Hertfordshire; Someries and Chiltern Green in Bedfordshire; and Peter's Green, Perry Green and Bendish, back in Hertfordshire. Planets (Antony Gormley, 2002), forecourt of the British Library, St Pancras, Camden, London. This artwork is a series of eight (8) igneous rocks that originate from northern Sweden or Norway, 350 to 1,000 million years ago. Each has a human figure carved into it.

 

GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 13 April 2019, an 8.3-mile point-to-point walk from St Pancras Station to Paddington Station via Somers Town, Fitzrovia, Marylebone, Mayfair, Hyde Park, Marble Arch and Paddington, which was attended by 37(!) people. The Orbit Tower aka the ArcelorMittal Orbit, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London E20. It is a 114.5 metre (376 feet) tall sculpture and observation tower. It is the UK's tallest tower, and includes the world's tallest and longest tunnel slide.

Cock Lane, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. The end of the walk. We went to the Red Lion pub afterwards, but I photographed that last year.

Lion sculpture at Woburn Safari Park, Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire. We just followed the public rights of way around the park. A queue of traffic can be seen to the right of the photo - it was pretty busy!

Suffragette Fellowship Memorial, Christchurch Gardens, Victoria Street, Westminster, London SW1H. By Edwin Russell, 1970.

Five Knolls, a group of round barrows erected for the burial of the dead in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age. The site was also used as gallows in Anglo-Saxon times. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Statue of General Don José de San Martín (1778-1850), founder of the Argentine independence, he also gave freedom to Chile and Peru. This statue is in Belgrave Square, Belgravia, Westminster, London SW1X. The sculpture is under a street light, so as the sun was fading, this came out with a nice glow!

Moor Park, Moor Park Golf Club, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire (Grade I). The house is now the club house for the golf club. I was not able to get a full view of the building from the footpath, so took several photos from several angles. The hill and trees were always in the way.

St Nicholas Church, Barton-le-Clay, Bedfordshire (Grade I). The railings and lamppost here are also Grade II listed.

St Giles' Church, Upper Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire (Grade II*). This church is now redundant and due to be converted to housing. It is usually closed but was open on this day for the Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust's Hike & Bike event, which we knew nothing about until we got here, so that was rather fortunate!

Ashridge House, which houses Ashridge Executive Education (formerly Ashridge Management College and Ashridge Business School), Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire (Grade I). The building was originally a country house dating to 1808–25, when it was rebuilt in the Gothic style on the site of a monastery of 1283 that became a royal residence following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 and then a private house. It became It became Ashridge Business School in 1959 (see history.

Suffolk House, Stevenage, Hertfordshire (not listed).

 

GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 12 March 2016, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Roy L led this 7.9-mile walk, attended by 17 people, though four of us (including me) gave mini-talks on some of the local history. For me, it was an opportunity to photograph more of the local listed buildings.
