Recently, it's occurred to me that I wanted to try something a little different and step outside of my comfort zone... just a little. I've always had a love of the sea, and a fascination for waves (and indeed most things in nature which exhibit such complex behaviour), so I thought I'd give it a go. Instead of the classic landscapes, can I turn my hand (or rather eye) to shifting the focus towards waves as the main element in a scene, rather than a mountain, say. Their constant motion, which is typically so difficult to predict, forces a whole new way of looking at a scene. So this is the start of a short series of photographs taken either of waves directly, or where the wave is the key element in a scene. This first set, which I'll upload in relatively quick succession, was all taken in Cornwall, and all on a Mamiya 645 Super and a manual focus 105-210mm F/4.5 lens. The films used are Ektar 100, Portra 160, Portra 400 and Provia 100F.

This is the first of eight in this initial set.

Kyle Franklin in Dracula waving to the crowd as he taxied out last Saturday. That was some great light! If only I could have taken advantage of it while he was flying and still shot from the crowd's perspective. I wonder why almost every airport has the FBOs on the east side of the runway?

The sea meets the coast of Bonaire with force and the plastic detritus can be seen clearly. Within the volcanic surface are thousands of tiny plastic beads. A dramatic coastline with a warning about the environment.

Deep below these waves there is life... I love this dormant peaceful existence. I love spring, but I will miss the snow...

Something about the waves is highly relatable to us. When we are happy, they reflect hope and the promises of the future; when we are sad, they echo an even deeper sadness and relentless melancholy. They speak to us about longing, hopelessness, and the pettiness of our joy and pain in the face of the Universe.

Unfortunately due to time and schedule constraints we were not able to catch the afternoon conditions when a west wind kicked up and smoothed out the surf. There is a strong riptide & undertow here so as always, use due caution.

We walked further down the beach to a spot where some rocks were sitting defiantly in the constant waves. I did have the tripod with me this time, and I tried to take a few pictures as the waves crashed and swirled in between the rocks along the shore.
