This is the classic view of Yosemite Valley from the Tunnel View parking lot, with the sheer Granite wall of El Capitan is on the left with Half Dome in the distance, and Cathedral Rocks and Bridal Veil Falls are on the right. This image was made at sunset in late autumn and shows a lenticular cloud forming over the Sierra Nevada indicating a gathering storm that broke the next afternoon.
It was taken very close to where Ansel Adams made his iconic image "Clearing Winter Storm" in 1940. It was, and is, very humbling to follow in those footsteps.
As one trained in the earth sciences, seeing Yosemite Valley for the first time is like going to a high religious service in honor of Gaia. One is simply overawed by the experience and left speechless and a little numb to see the bones of the earth hewn so clearly. Places like this seem remote from the rest of the world yet fill me with reverence for the sublime beauty of our small and fragile planet.
