They left the cap off the water meter on a house opposite the apartment. I wanted to see if I could read the meter from my window.

Not a chance with my consumer grade 75-300mm lens. In the third shot I used a 2X teleconverter. It's easy to see the image quality loss that occurs.

This is the reason for the yellow spots which appeared on the metal plates in front of our houses.

I think the privatisation of the Water Boards was the most unsavoury part of the desire of the previous Conservative government to sell off the publicly owned utilities. Southern Water is not in business to supply people with water, it is in business to make money for its shareholders. Living on my own I benefit from having a water meter but a family with young children pay more by having a meter. Water is a basic commodity which one cannot do without and to deny people access to it because they cannot afford it is, for me, "the unacceptable face of capitalism".

Ok, so it does not look like much, but it took me most of a whole day to move our water meter off of the floor behind the dryer to the wall above the dryer and install the new vent for the the dryer. Well we put in the drywall on that wall, insulated, and added new shut off valves for the water too.

This thing is a favorite of mine for photography.

Some Chinese apartment builings have water meters like these outside the building. These were near the roadside. The plumbing in some builings leaves alot to be desired.

I live in an apartment complex that claims to base my water bill and sewage bill upon the actual number of gallons of water I use. Nobody can explain to me exactly how they know what my meter reads at any given moment when meter readers never enter my apartment to read it. The meter is just above my washing machine. There appears to be some kind of communication mechanism that supposedly tells them what my usage is, but I have no proof that it works. Am I being paranoid? It comes to a good chunk of change each month so I care. Perhaps I'm just gay for numbers. 5,660,505.8 gallons.

Since the city only charges a few dollars per 1000 gallons of water used, this meter thing is turning out to be a very good deal in the long run.

Even if they raised the rates (which they won't for seven years, by which time I'll be eligible for the senior water rate), it'll still be better than $450.00 flat rate every six months, whether I used no water or emptied Lake Michigan.

Thought this was a great smattering of utility guages, bells, cables, etc.

I was tempted to dig it up and take it home. Well actually I still am...
