Detail from a pumping station instrument for measuring and recording water flow over time using the Venturi principle.
This is the water meter in the street in front of our house. I thought it looked kind of interesting in light of the setting sun.
Water supplies were nationalised in 1947. In 1973, the Welsh Water Authority took over the Herefordshire Water Board, and in 1989 under privatisation, Welsh Water/Dwr Cymru took over the Welsh Water Authority.
This is the iconic Sewerage & Water Board water meter cover in New Orleans. Artists have used this lovely design on all sorts of pieces, from pot holders to ceramic clocks.

The Daily Shoot #ds479 - Make a photograph that features water in one way or another today.
The weather was supposed to be snow, sleet and hail turning to heavy rain today. I thought for sure my walk home would give me plenty of opportunities to feature water.
Instead, it was cold and dry. The closest I came to any water was this line of water meters in the sidewalk. There were 13!! of them in about 20 feet of space. I guess each apartment gets their own water bill every month.
We found this gem of a beach more than thirty years ago, we have visited several times over the years; there was always a danger of the cliffs disappearing, but the storm of last winter together with normal erosion have taken it's toll on them
Because the New Orleans water meters have become cultural icons since hurricane Katrina, I like to take photos of water meters wherever I go.
This one has a lovely Communist star on it.

These leaves were laid out on the bunker lid to my works water meter. I just liked the way they were naturally placed. I have used some photoshop manipulation to help enhance what I liked about the leaves. It seems like autumn started in the middle of august. I cannot recall so many leaves being shed this early on before what we expect to start near the end of september.
Saw this in the sidewalk in beautiful Rocky Mount, Virginia. I thought there are probably those of you on Flickr who enjoy looking at photos of caps and lids and covers regarding local municipal services, so I stopped a moment and snapped the photo.
These are the little things I do for you — that makes our relationship work.
extraatje; de vulopening van de watertank is voorzien van een microswitch. Tijdens het vullen van de tank zal de verlichting aan gaan zodat de watermeter goed zichtbaar is, ook zonder inschakeling van licht etc.

They left the cap off the water meter on a house opposite the apartment. I wanted to see if I could read the meter from my window.
Not a chance with my consumer grade 75-300mm lens. In the third shot I used a 2X teleconverter. It's easy to see the image quality loss that occurs.
This is the reason for the yellow spots which appeared on the metal plates in front of our houses.
I think the privatisation of the Water Boards was the most unsavoury part of the desire of the previous Conservative government to sell off the publicly owned utilities. Southern Water is not in business to supply people with water, it is in business to make money for its shareholders. Living on my own I benefit from having a water meter but a family with young children pay more by having a meter. Water is a basic commodity which one cannot do without and to deny people access to it because they cannot afford it is, for me, "the unacceptable face of capitalism".
