I've been wanting to do a selective color shot for a while, so the Ohio Foothills challenge for the month "Red" gave me the opportunity to do it.
When I went to Scioto Trail State Park, I originally had planned to photograph one of the rusty red painted bridges reflecting in the water. However, Caldwell Lake was still mostly frozen. My search for red was not in vain, as I noticed this red sign. The red didn't really stand out very well in the color version since the sign was in the shade. I think selective color helped tremendously.
This sign, warning that my hotel contains chemicals, cancer causing, wasn't on the front of the building, but on one random entrance in the back of the building...I'd think if you have to post such a sign wouldn't it be smart to require it to be posted at least at the main entrance?

These signs are at pretty much every beach in Hawaii. They really don't want you swimming in the ocean there.

Shot with my "Do It Yourself" Gakkenflex TLR Camera. Fuji Superia 200.
The Gakkenflex 35mm TLR is a plastic kit camera that is included in issue #25 of "Otona no kagaku magazine", published by Gakken. The name "Gakkenflex" is molded into the front of the camera.
Documentation included with the kit indicates that the fixed f-stop is f/11 and the single shutter speed is 1/125. The camera uses standard 35mm film cassettes and exposes a 24mm x 36mm frame in portrait orientation. The lens is a single element plastic meniscus lens. Focusing of the taking and viewing lenses is synchronized by external gears, in the same way as the geared lens Ricohflex.

La città contemporanea è un cantiere in continuo allestimento: il ventre della metropoli viene svuotato e riempito di cemento, attraversato da treni, gli edifici non più funzionali finiscono con l’essere ben presto demoliti mentre gli scheletri di ferro dei palazzi in costruzione dominano il paesaggio delle periferie.
Lavori continuamente in corso, che sembra non debbano avere mai fine, perché per ogni cantiere che chiude ce ne sono altri due pronti ad essere aperti, proprio lì accanto.
E così l’immagine brulicante e continuamente in fieri di una metropoli diventa metafora del processo creativo, della ricerca della Forma e della sua continua metamorfosi ed evoluzione.
Spesso lacerante e problematico, in altri casi giocoso e spensierato, il processo che dovrebbe portare alla conquista del tanto agognato “Stile” e della dimensione espressiva più congeniale non conduce ad un approdo definitivo.
Come una città che punta ad ampliarsi nei quartieri moderni ma al contempo a preservare il suo cuore antico, anche l’artista scava tra reminescenze e suggestioni, si fa “poeta”, “colui che crea”, ma anche demolitore di luoghi comuni e portatore di rivoluzioni.
Difficile dunque trovare un equilibrio tra forze centrifughe: è un cammino che dura anche una vita intera, un cantiere sempre aperto.
Spesso lungo questo cammino, che pur bisogna percorrere da soli, si incontrano compagni di viaggio, si condividono paesaggi e mete. Questa mostra ci accompagna lungo le strade percorse da Dario Molinaro, Jonathan Pappolla e Raffaele Siniscalco: tre percorsi paralleli che prendono il via, per tutti e tre, nel 1985 e che, in barba alla geometria tradizionale, sono destinati ad intersecarsi.
Eclettica la scelta dei soggetti operata da Dario Molinaro, artista onnivoro per il quale mondi reali e mondi immaginari sono ugualmente degni di essere rappresentati, spesso sovrapposti. Non ci sono limiti per questa irriverente ricerca che scardina dall’interno l’immaginario dell’uomo medio, un mondo fatto di cartoon e belle donne, di pubblicità e favole ascoltate da piccoli. La parola, con tutto il suo bagaglio evocativo, spesso enigmatico, accompagna costantemente l’immagine e genera effetti stranianti, paradossali.
Jonathan Pappolla apre le porte ad una dimensione distorta ed allucinata: la figura femminile, tradizionalmente emblema del Bello artistico, subisce un processo di trasfigurazione assumendo tratti di mostruosità, mentre il mostro per eccellenza, il drago, e “l’altro”, l’alieno, vengono immortalati in atteggiamenti e gesti tipicamente umani. La scelta di cromie acide ed innaturali – che non si trovano in natura – ci scaraventa, nostro malgrado, in una inquietante dimensione surreale.
La mostra propone una breve escursione attraverso i paesaggi poetici tracciati da Raffaele Siniscalco: dimensioni oniriche e metafisiche, immagini dominate dal colore o perse nella soluzione del bianco/nero, mondi in cui rifugiarsi o dai quali rifuggire, strade lungo le quali incontrare gli strambi personaggi usciti dalla mente dell’artista e, se si guarda bene, l’artista stesso.
