We came across this Black-Crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) just off the trail at Circle B Bar Reserve (CBBR) near Lakeland, Florida. Initially, he appeared to be sleeping but then he opened his left eye. It may be that one way birds lose body heat is through their beaks. This guy seems to be keeping his beak warm by tucking it under his feathers. He measures 23-28 inches (58-70 cm) from beak-tip to tail-tip.

the reason why i love winter !! it's cold .. everything freezes .. but just holding my hand can make my hand warm .. even can make my blood HOT
You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them.

August days are hot and the gardens need water from rain or from daily watering. The colors are still lively but rely on lots of water. Thanks for viewing my work. Stay safe and be kind to everyone.

Hackberry Emperor butterfly gathering some residual heat from my SUV's hood.
Somewhat uncommon for the season.
One of the last warm fall days with newly planted mums in eye catching patterns. Monarch butterflies were buzzing around still at this late hour of the season. It was a good day for a walk in the garden.

Happy Fence Friday - a thin wire fence but not a strong fence is needed to contain that old tractor.
The tractor sits lonely having worked hard the past harvest season - now it soaks up the final warm sun of the season.
Snow expected tomorrow!.
Lovely warm sunny day in the middle of autumn, it is a great time to take a nice walk through forest. Just to wander without destination to grab some energy before the sun goes down and grey-black snowless winter takes over. The place is same, but the spirit is gone.

This track title from Thurston Moore seemed just about perfect to describe a morning wandering one of Britains most dramatic mountains all alone. I followed the stream up stopping here and there to take too many photos, fox tracks were the only other signs in the snow, and a dipper flew up and down, welcoming me into it's kingdom! Ice sheathed the stream, as it was still early and the sun was yet to really warm things up!
