Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

Situated in North Yorkshire, the 18th century designed landscape of Studley Royal water garden and pleasure grounds, including the ruins of Fountains Abbey, is one harmonious whole of buildings, gardens and landscapes. This landscape of exceptional merit and beauty represents over 800 years of human ambition, design and achievement.

Studley Royal Park is one of the few great 18th century gardens to survive substantially in its original form, and is one of the most spectacular water gardens in England. The landscape garden is an outstanding example of the development of the ‘English’ garden style throughout the 18th century, which influenced the rest of Europe. With the integration of the River Skell into the water gardens and the use of ‘borrowed’ vistas from the surrounding countryside, the design and layout of the gardens is determined by the form of the natural landscape, rather than being imposed upon it. The garden contains canals, ponds, cascades, lawns and hedges, with elegant garden buildings, gateways and statues. The Aislabies’ vision survives substantially in its original form, most famously in the spectacular view of the ruins of Fountains Abbey itself.

Fountains Abbey ruins is not only a key eye catcher in the garden scheme, but is of outstanding importance in its own right, being one of the few Cistercian houses to survive from the 12th century and providing an unrivalled picture of a great religious house in all its parts.

The remainder of the estate is no less significant. At the west end of the estate is the transitional Elizabethan/Jacobean Fountains Hall, partially built from reclaimed abbey stone. With its distinctive Elizabethan façade enhanced by a formal garden with shaped hedges, it is an outstanding example of its period.

Located in the extensive deer park is St Mary’s Church, a masterpiece of High Victorian Gothic architecture, designed by William Burges in 1871 and considered to be one of his finest works.

Criterion (i): Studley Royal Park including the ruins of Fountains Abbey owes its originality and striking beauty to the fact that a humanised landscape was created around the largest medieval ruins in the United Kingdom. The use of these features, combined with the planning of the water garden itself, is a true masterpiece of human creative genius.

Criterion (iv): Combining the remains of the richest abbey in England, the Jacobean Fountains Hall, and Burges’s miniature neo-Gothic masterpiece of St Mary’s, with the water gardens and deer park into one harmonious whole, Studley Royal Park including the ruins of Fountains Abbey illustrates the power of medieval monasticism and the taste and wealth of the European upper classes in the 18th century.

This church in Reine seemed to be mirroring the mountains behind.

The broken phone booth

Ringing in my ears

It's not for me

No one knows who I am

I do not call

Nor be called

I do not answer

Nor be answered

My incoming calls were never outgoing

I am secret

I am hidden

(Spotted this phone booth. Is it just me, or is this thing probably haunted?)

The Fiat 500 is an inexpensive and practical small car. Launch in 1957, it was designed by Dante Giacosa.

It is a symbol of the Italian car, like the Volkswagen Beetle in Germany. Its very small size allows to drive in any narrow way, in cities or campaigns.

Production of the 500 ended in 1975, after Fiat sell close to 4 million units throughout the world.

London Bridge, London, England, UK

One of the most recognisable buildings in central London is the Shard, a pyramidal 72-storey skyscraper which was completed in 2013 and is, at the time of writing, the tallest building in the United Kingdom. The Shard is situated on the south bank of the river Thames, in the old City of Southwark, and has a balancing effect on the London skyline – the majority of the high-rise buildings being in the City of London on the north bank. On this winter morning, the weather was in transition, too. After the ice came the fire; after the fire came the rain.

This was taken hand held on the Ferry Boat. I had to run to catch the last ferry. I could have done so much better with more time and a tripod. But I'm still pleased with how it turned out.

Another attempt at photographing a freezing soap bubble. Killing time before the Super Bowl. Near zero today so conditions were good for this kind of thing. The plant is ice covered but I have no idea what type of plant it is. It took a couple of tries but the soap bubble stuck finally without breaking. The blue color cast was achieved by using a color balance around 2700.

I've lived in Albany for 13 years, about 2 miles from the capitol, and I only just went there for the first time today. Better late than never!

The West Staircase, known by its nickname the "Million Dollar Staircase" is one of the architectural highlights of the building. I will definitely be going back to shoot it from some more angles, since I only had 45 minutes to do so this time (city parking do be like that sometimes).

Part of this year's harvest.

With a reversing ring adapter and a SMC Takumar 50mm, wide open f1.4. On full-frame.

This is the first time I've tried a reversing ring and I wasn't expecting such a fast fall off to blur...but this is something fun to play with.

- Candlelit Light Painting Still Life-

Another Still life study with soft macro at candle's light, in the style of the antique painters of Middle Ages.

Shot in darkness and painted by highlighting portions of the composition moving a handheld candle.

Mini bonsai golden and red apples and two big apples.

(Natura morta alla maniera dei pittori dell'antichità).

I'd just like to add, that I don't use any filters, neither on lenses nor in post-production: it's my exigency to reach the "essence", the pure realistic & artistic effect via the sole use of my display, the footage setting preparation and shooting ability. In any case I like to experiment with natural lighting and photography until I reach something that may be interesting to me.

For the friends of my Gallery #PURENN : this is what my eyes saw in conditions of darkness +dim candleslight and I am happy I can now show the purest realistic result to you too! The magic of Nature with no special artificial effects either than the Nature itself which is the most beautiful and truest special effect :-)

Cube Houses - Kijk Kubus - Maisons Cubiques

Architect: Piet Blom - 1984

The Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) in Rotterdam are one of the city’s most iconic attractions. Designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom, this residential development stands apart as its homes are literally cubes, tilted over by 45 degrees.

Maybe an ant's perspective on this Sunday Morning. But maybe not!

Slightly re-processed from the first version (original flic.kr/p/2m27Fj1). It's closer to the raw photo than one might guess - the color is from the prism-like effect when sunlight hit our front door just right, and was landing on our cat's face. This is cropped to create a composition with the multicolored whiskers.

The base of the pyramid is 109m by 121 m wide. The two seated figures give us an idea of just how tall Djoser’s pyramid is. Constructed approximately 3000 ago, it was a remarkable feat of engineering, ingenuity and mathematic genius.

Sicilian Adventures - The stunning 300BC Graeco-Roman amphitheatre of Taormina. A magnificent mountaintop setting with breathtaking views in every direction. Exciting glimpses of the castle and church of Castelmola nested even higher up in the mountain crags. Lush views downwards of the Ionian Sea with clear views of the Italian mainland. And magical views outwards to Mount Etna draped in cloud.

BTW Taormina is the setting for the HBO TV Series The White Lotus!

A new adventure for me to shoot on my iPhone, outdoors away from my studio, and especially to shoot landscapes and buildings rather than people.
