Die Halde Haniel in Bottrop (an der Grenze zu Oberhausen-Königshardt) ist mit 159 m Höhe (184,9 m über Normalnull) eine der höchsten Halden des Ruhrgebiets. Der auf der Halde Haniel abgeladene Abraum aus dem Steinkohle-Bergbau stammt aus den Schichten des Karbon und enthält daher teilweise fossile Abdrücke von Pflanzen aus jenem Zeitalter.
Auf dem Plateau der südlichen Spirale wurde 1992 das Gipfelkreuz aufgestellt, das anlässlich des Besuches von Papst Johannes Paul II. am 2. Mai 1987 von Auszubildenden des Bergwerkes aus Spurlatten angefertigt und durch Bischof Franz Hengsbach am Karfreitag desselben Jahres gesegnet wurde. Es ist Teil eines Kreuzwegs mit 15 Stationen,
Neben dem Holzkreuz – in einer Höhe von 126 Metern – befindet sich ein im Vollkreis angelegtes Amphitheater mit 800 Plätzen, die Bergarena. Hier finden regelmäßig Kultur- und Theaterveranstaltungen statt, unter anderem wurden die Stücke Jedermann (1999), Ein Sommernachtstraum (2001), Die Dreigroschenoper (2002) und Cabaret (2003) aufgeführt. Anlässlich des Kulturhauptstadtjahres „Ruhr.2010“ fand hier eine Neuinszenierung von Giuseppe Verdis Oper Aida unter der künstlerischen Leitung des Bottroper Regisseurs Thomas Grandoch statt.
2002 wurde die Installation Totems vom baskischen Maler und Bildhauer Agustín Ibarrola aus über einhundert Eisenbahnschwellen geschaffen. Die Arbeit verbindet die „scheinbaren Gegensätze von Industrieraum und Natur“ (Aussage des Künstlers).
Durch die Stilllegung und Renaturierung der Halde konnten sich viele Tier- und Pflanzenarten auf dem brachfliegenden Gebiet ansiedeln. Am Fuß der Halde findet sich ein dichter Laubwald, der auch in der umgebenden Region typisch ist. Darin findet man neben Brombeeren und unterschiedlichen Farnen auch Bereiche mit Wildrosen, die sich mit zunehmender Höhe mit Nadelhölzern mischen. Die höchsten Ebenen der Halde werden von Gras und vereinzelten Pionierpflanzen wie Kamillen bewachsen.
Neben der Flora hat sich eine bemerkenswerte Faunengemeinschaft gebildet. Dazu gehören neben unterschiedlichen Hautflüglern auch Turmfalken, Erdkröten, Zauneidechsen und Wildkaninchen. Einige der dort anzutreffenden Tierarten sind in Nordrhein-Westfalen mittlerweile in ihren Beständen gefährdet.

Single take (NOT a composite). Adjusting for proper exposure of the Moon resulted in an overexposed airliner (that was flying at 40,000ft and still lit up by the sun).
The OO-CFG, the Da42 from Ostend Air College (Belgium). This gorgeous aircraft is a multi-engine piston aeroplane which student pilots use in the final part of their training. Only a few flights to go on this beauty before reaching my CPL (commercial pilot license).

This chapel was made famous by the Da Vinci Code film. Up until the film and book appeared the chapel had around 20,000 visitors per year; this shot up to around 180,000 after the film.
Rosslyn Chapel, properly named the Collegiate Church of St Matthew, was originally a Roman Catholic church founded in the village of Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland, in the mid-fifteenth century. Construction on the chapel began under William Sinclair in 1456, a noble family descended from Norman knights.

Photograph taken inside the chapel grounds by my wife. It didn’t allow dogs in, so I stayed outside for the 90 minutes with Patches whilst Tracey went in. There wasn’t any suitable opportunities to take a photograph outside of the grounds… high walls etc around the chapel.

My submission for the FlickrFriday theme topic Minimum. My interpretation of Minimum is the lowest amount of something that serves the purpose of its being. On the surface, this image is about the minimum amount of candlelight that creates the atmosphere. Then it is the minimum amount of ambient light from neon signs filtering through the plastic covers of this makeshift roadside dining place. It is also about the minimum amount of social distancing we have to have to safely live our lives during this pandemic.

How to know ? We'll have to look inside this hat, try and read lhe label which I can image stuck onto this woven material, precisely where it touches the top of the head. I imagine it to be yellowish, like my dustbin or the inside of an egge, but I can read nothing but the obsessive search for a sign of authenticity wich Ralph has already given me in speaking of « Piece of Visual Intelligence ».
