WORD UP!, the poetry slam for high school students who are enrolled in schools—or home schooled—in Jefferson County, celebrates its eighth anniversary this year.

Word UP! is a poetry slam for Jefferson County high school students (grades 9-12) sponsored by the Birmingham Public Library and Real Life Poets. Participants write and perform an original work inspired by the theme "SPEAK OUT". The participants in WORD UP! will be the winners from each school's contest. Each school is responsible for holding its own contest.
