„... Vor 80 Jahren ist in diesen Straßen so viel Blut vergossen worden. Dieses Rot hat den Weg hin zur Befreiung gefärbt. Für mich ist der 8. Mai ein Tag der Befreiung. Und nicht ein Tag der Niederlage. Wer so denkt, der zeigt mir, wessen Geistes Kind er ist. Die Urenkel der sogenannten Herrenrasse. Sie gibt es in so vielen Nationen, in so vielen Farben. Aber ihr Wesen ist und bleibt Schwarz. Und Braun. Die Verklärung und die Verdrängung. Gegen sie stelle ich mich. Gegen das Vergessen... Der eine Großvater war Hilfswilliger der Ustascha bei der Wehrmacht. Und hat für Führer, Volk und Vaterland ein Bein verloren. Der andere Großvater war bei den Partisanen und hat gegen die deutsche Wehrmacht gekämpft. Meine beiden Eltern haben sich nicht viel über ihre Väter erzählt. Weil meine Mutter wegen der Vergangenheit ihres Vaters in Jugoslawien gehänselt wurde. Und mein Vater musste die Gewaltausbrüche seines Vater ertragen. Was für ein Irrsinn. Was wäre aus dieser Welt geworden, hätte es keine Befreiung gegeben? Je länger ich darüber nachdenke, um so mehr wächst mein Widerstand. Gegen jene, die sich wieder auf den Weg zurück machen wollen. Die Geschichte kann man nicht ändern. Man kann nur die Wahrheit zur Lüge erklären. Wer dies tut, der spuckt auf all die Opfer, egal auf welcher Seite. Im Krieg gibt es keine Gewinner. Das hat mich der Balkankrieg gelehrt, den ich erleben musste. Aber manchmal ist ein Kampf notwendig. Srebrenica mahnt mich... Als am 9 November 1993 Stari Most in die Neretva gestürzt ist, nachdem Streitkräfte der bosnischen Kroaten sich zerschossen hatten, habe ich mich gegen meine Abstammung gestellt... Ich bin eine zerrissene Persönlichkeit... Kreativität hat mich Widerstandsfähig gemacht...“

The idea to promote the Nine Little Streets as a shopping area came from Djoeke Wessing. Still a local shop keeper, she wanted a common name for the area to give the same allure as the Jordan. This, she felt, would promote cooperation and business growth, but also attract more tourists to the hitherto relatively unknown area. The Association of The 9 Streets was founded on November 12, 1996. Nobody thought it was a good name at the time, but the name has stuck, and the area retains de 9 Straatjes' name.

The Nine Streets: Reestraat, Hartenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oudespiegelstraat, Wolvenstraat, Berenstraat, Huidenstraat, Runstraat y Weide Heisteeg.

Internal research fellow Johanna Wessing performing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the topmost skin of a candidate material for space.

This powerful technique enables the analysis of surface structures and composition to a depth of just a few nanometres – a nanometre being a billionth of a metre, or, typically, a few dozen individual atoms.

Exposure to space can be bad for the health of many substances, combining prolonged exposure to vacuum with intense sunlight, radiation and temperature extremes. Its surface is where a material meets the outside environment so this kind of inspection is important: variations in surface chemistry can substantially alter a material’s overall behaviour.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provides not only the unique fingerprint of an element but also its chemical state and information about the nature of surrounding atoms. In addition this process can also check whether a material is truly clean, right down to atomic scale, to avoid introducing any contamination.

The X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer is one of a comprehensive suite of analysis tools at ESA’s Materials and Electrical Components Laboratory at the ESTEC technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

When we approached this guy was more than happy to pose and offered to hold the reflector for us. He knew how to stand and looked where the light was coming from.

When we finished we asked for his details and he gave my friend a business card. He turns out to be a Allan Warren, a high society photographer which certainly explains the twinkle in his eye and the wry smile ;-))

A wonderful story for him to share over dinner;-))

Gelegen bei Hohenburg im oberpfälzer Lauterachtal.

Wann und auf wessen Initiative die Wallfahrtskirche erbaut wurde, ist unbekannt.

Irgendwelche urkundlichen Belege fehlen. Die volkstümliche Überlieferung hingegen will die Entstehung auf eine Schlacht zurückführen, die im Jahre 976 zwischen Kaiser Otto II. und Heinrich II., dem Zänker, im sog. „Blutgraben“ unterhalb von Mendorferbuch im Wald geschlagen wurde. Damals soll der Kaiser seinen Feldherrnstab in das Erdreich gestoßen und im Falle seines Sieges den Bau einer Kirche an dieser Stelle gelobt haben. Diese sollte „Stehtkirchen“ heißen.

Kaiser Otto II. wurde Sieger und löste sein Versprechen ein.
