The barracks were built between 1717 and 1721 by Nicholas Hawksmoor for the Board of Ordnance to protect the town during the Jacobite risings. The work, which involved two parallel blocks of military accommodation, was supervised by Captain Thomas Phillips. An additional block was added between 1739 and 1741. After the Napoleonic Wars the barracks were abandoned but put back into use in the 1850s.

Following the Childers Reforms, the barracks became the depot of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, who arrived from Fulford Barracks in July 1881. The regiment moved out of the barracks in 1963 and they are now maintained by English Heritage.

Nicholas Hawksmoor was an English architect. He was a leading figure of the English Baroque style of architecture in the late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth centuries

Lyrics.

If you were a sailboat I would sail you to the shore.

If you were a river I would swim you,

If you were a house I would live in you all my days.

If you were a preacher I’d begin to change my ways.

But it's a bike :-/

Everyoneeee in Florence had one, I want one. I'm getting a bike.

There were hundreds of mallards in the park on this day. A great opportunity to brush up on my bird in flight capture technique!

Our efforts were rewarded when we hiked high up Sheep Mountain via the headwaters of the little creek running past our camp. The sheep were everywhere. This ram appears to be interested in me, but really he was just following the edible plants downslope, where I happened to be, cropping a mouthful here and a mouthful there.

Dall Sheep are sometimes called "thinhorn sheep"; you can see how their horns are thinner and more flared than those of the Bighorn Sheep found to the south. We spent a couple hours with a small band of rams, and then some ewes that were scattered in twos and threes across the tundra slopes. One of the highlights of that summer.

"Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd (Gilmour/Waters) - sheet music for acoustic guitar(s) ...

one of my all-time favourite songs by one of my all-time favourite bands - a very emotional and melancholic masterpice with the topic of absence, fear and loss ...

Although Pink Floyd did give a statement about the meaning of the lyrics, there are millions of interpretations of the text out there as almost everybody can relate with this softly wording ... that's the beauty and "timelessness" of it in my opinion

❤ Dedicated to absent friends ❤

Noten / Tabulatur für "Wish you were here" von Pink Floyd (Gilmour/Waters), einem meiner Allzeit - Lieblingssongs ...

❤ in Erinnerung an geliebten Menschen ❤

There were two of them, both hunting in the snow for critters. They were pretty focused on lunch as normally they are very skittish animals and getting this close is unusual. Bon appetit.

We were exploring a part of the island that we had not previously been to. I was looking to do some landscape photography but the light was poor. However I happened upon this charming vehicle which made a good subject instead.

Now who or what sort of person do you think would own a car like this?

Answers welcome below:

An out of work clown! (Skippy the Dolphin)

A colourful personality (Jeananne Martin)

Someone who likes to be noticed (Em-Photo)

Someone who previously had their car stolen (Em-Photo)

A person who is in love with the great Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. (Ward Ausman)

Someone who is into the 1980's style and colors (Ward Ausman)

Someone who has a playful sense of humor (Dan A)

A Social Worker (Simon Downham... but that might be very local humour)

We were doing a 10K run, but I always carry a camera in my backpack....Comes in handy on ocassions like these...

We were at the gate when it opened and as we drove in we noticed two rhinos on the side of the road. The sun was not fully up and this is the photo that resulted.

This is my farewell photo from South Africa - tomorrow we fly out for home.

The Bighorn Sheep were in an area in Jasper where I don't usually see them, near the turnoff to the Maligne Lake Road. The Ewes were grazing and had obviously shooed several lambs up on the rocks to get some peace.

The lambs were full of energy and were quite entertaining for a few minutes, scrambling around on the rocks. I couldn't manage to get a good action shot but did get this lamb isolated, standing up on a ledge.

The traffic was awful, including several long haul truckers and the local province tourists, in their monster F-350 diesels. I swear the behavior of the lunatic fringe is getting worse all the time - where are the police to enforce the reduced speed limit zones in known animal areas?

T. Rex were an English rock band, formed in 1967 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. The band was initially called Tyrannosaurus Rex, and released four psychedelic folk albums under this name. In 1969, Bolan began to change the band's style towards electric rock, and shortened their name to T. Rex the following year. This development culminated in 1970 with the song "Ride a White Swan", and the group soon became pioneers of the glam rock movement.

While it seems every man and his dog were up the S&C again, I decided on a more local outing. Not being arsed to have a full day out and seeing 419 was allocated to this, there was really only one option in my opinion. Having done my local spots to death with this train and still not succeeding with the sun, I travelled further up the coast for a more scenic, picturesque view. St Bees is the location and running 46 minutes early, 37419 heads north with the usual monthly 1q47 Derby-Carlisle test train. 37423 was on the rear. Had it been on time it would've been touch and go with the sun as a bank of cloud had started to roll in by then.

Now thats just about every 37 nailed on this train, all I need now is 37425 in it's Regional Railway's livery to complete the set!!

The railway unions were on strike when we passed the Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales, so there was little point in waiting for a train. In the background is Whernside, one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. It is the highest at 2,415 feet above sea level, with the other two being Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. All three can be seen from near where this shot was taken.

The Ribblehead Viaduct in North Yorkshire is regarded as the most impressive structure on the Settle-Carlisle Railway. It is Grade II*-listed and dates from the 1870s when hundreds of railway builders ("navvies") lost their lives building the line, from a combination of accidents, fights, and smallpox outbreaks. In particular, building the Ribblehead (then called Batty Moss) viaduct, with its 24 massive stone arches 104 feet above the moor, caused such loss of life that the railway paid for an expansion of the local graveyard.

There is a fascinating and detailed historical note at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribblehead_Viaduct.

The buildings were both started in 1885 with the Jail opening in 1886 and the Court House in 1887. Originally, the Council had decided to open the buildings on the date of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee which was June 22, 1887. It was suggested to allow $500.00 to pay for the festivities. However, the money was returned to a general fund as it was never spent because the buildings were opened instead on May 9, at the beginning of the spring assizes

George F. Durand was born in 1850 to Scottish parents. His artistic ability encouraged his father to enroll him in Peel’s Art School, London, where after two years of study, specializing in marble sculpturing, Durand began his studies in architecture in apprenticeship with London architect, William Robinson. After completing his apprenticeship, Durand moved to the United States, where he helped with the designs of the New York State Capital Building for a short time.

The were plenty of Mute Swans at Cape May this trip. I found it interesting to hear the sound they made as they flew, almost as though they were gasping for air with each wing stroke which they were of course. They were close enough that I went for a head shot with my long lens combination and captured this lovely creature.

Symbolic metal mirror drops were created to be placed in the central square of Kharkov on the day of the city, August 23. But due to the insane shelling of Kharkov, which Russian barbarians continued to carry out, it was impossible to install an art object there. And the authors came up with a proposal to decorate the public space of Kyiv with giant drops.

As conceived by the authors, the drops gravitate both to the ground and to each other, symbolizing the unity of the two cities - the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, and Kharkov, which today courageously resists the Russian aggressor.

The project was implemented by a workshop from Kharkov METALSTYLE, they called it "Unity"

We were lucky to be in Kingston when the famous Snowbirds air display team performed spectacular aerobatics above Fort Henry. All free of charge too - in the UK to see such things costs a fortune! There was a vast appreciative crowd too, it was a a great afternoon out.

The fortifications of the town were built after the Mongol Invasion. It had four gates, which opened to the south, west, north and northeast. The plain of the town slightly slopes north, so the southern gate, which was located on the highest point, was called Upper Gate, while the northeastern gate, which was located on the lowest point, was called Lower Gate. The walls were defended by wide moats.

The trade road coming from the central regions of Hungary left the town towards Poland through the Lower Gate. From the town gate a little wooden bridge led to a half-round barbican, which still stands, surrounded by moats. From the barbican a drawbridge led across the moat. After the fortifications of the town lost their significance, the wooden bridges over the moats were demolished and a new stone bridge was raised with two 5-metres wide arches in 1821. A similar stone bridge was built to connect the barbican with the town but it had only one arch.

We were incredibly lucky to find this normally very secretive owl out in the open and only 5 minutes away from a skittish Great Grey Owl hunting on the same stretch of road.

There were a lot of people at Brockway Mountain - young and old, from many different walks of life - all gathered together to enjoy the outdoors and see a beautiful sunset. Some were sitting quietly, others were taking selfies and laughing, some stopped to chat while taking time to pet the dogs : ) it was a relaxed feeling of community - everyone was friendly and it made me think... if only the world could be like this.

These were very popular so time for a new batch

...they were talking about some cookie-cutter girl who looked like every other stupid girl in sl. Laughing at her, just standing there, not moving, like a brainless, boring statue. I don't pay a lot of attention to local when I'm shopping, but I saw it go by. I pretty much just cam around, get what I came for, and go.

Took a minute to realize we were the only ones there, and I was - to them - the brainless, boring, cookie-cutter statue. I scrolled back through local - none of it was any nicer.

I wish I could say I said something. Anything. I didn't. I got what I came for, and left.

I wish I could say I let it roll off my back. I didn't.

After a 13 hour day that was pretty much a nightmare from start to finish, walking into someone's public humiliation of me wasn't my favorite way to wrap up, but that's what I got. They don't know me, or what I dealt with, that I already felt like crap, and that I'm worried about how I'm going to deal with tomorrow. I was just some thing to laugh at.

I know it was just words. Everyone's got an opinion, and I ran into theirs. Hell, I've done my share of criticizing what I don't identify with in other people. I just don't do it in local. Sadly, I don't know if that makes me any better.

So, yeah. Just words. It's the disregard behind them that stings. I'm just as guilty.

Maybe today, let's just be kind to each other, k?

These parakeets were sitting on a slanting supporting wire of a piller.

The rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), also known as the ring-necked parakeet, is a medium-sized parrot in the genus Psittacula, of the family Psittacidae. It has disjunct native ranges in Africa and South Asia, and is now introduced into many other parts of the world where feral populations have established themselves and are bred for the exotic pet trade.

The rose-ringed parakeet is sexually dimorphic. The adult male sports a red and black neck ring, and the hen and immature birds of both sexes either show no neck rings, or display shadow-like pale to dark grey neck rings.

We were on our way to check out another waterfall in the valley of Utladalen and then we came across this beauty.

178 meters tall it was, we stopped and couldn't leave it without us snapping tons of photos of it.

Almond blossoms were gone and the crunchy sour fruit broke under her teeth. She picked the bigger ones first not wanting to lose any chance of eating all she could before they hardened into their shells. The fruit yielded some juice. She licked her lips after the traces of each drop.

He once called her his own almond blossom. He even used to order this special perfume from an unknown brand in Germany, White Flowers, it was called, for her, just so she could embody the blossoms.

She’d wear it for him and it drove him crazy thinking she wore a perfume that travelled miles across continents to be in her creases for his joy. For his pleasure, only. She’d laugh as she sprayed the bottle a bit here and a bit there, unsure what spot to choose or how much to spray. With time she gained experience and confidence. She realized that time she’d forgotten to wear the thing and had sprayed herself with some other scent and he went as crazy. And the time when she wore too much and also the time she wore too little, even when she mixed them up. He would be as crazy. After a while she wouldn’t even laugh as she sprayed it or any other perfume on her. He always took credit for her natural perfume. Recently, when she wanted to wear it for her own joy, she’d choose a remote spot like the crease of her thigh or the back of her knee.

The thrill came when she went to see “him” and last minute, she had this whisper in her mind, “Wear the almonds! Wear his perfume!”

She paused a second. Her fingers reached the counter top where she kept her few bottles. She watched her long fingernails scratching against this bottle and then the other. She followed the shadows traveling around the countertop in between her fingers and the marble, among the crystals, the bottles. She was letting the thought brew in her mind. She had a faint smile on her face as she listened to the sound of her thought.

Her eyes sparkled as she opened the drawer and took the small bottle out, pulled the lid back and first sprayed it gently on her wrists, a drop… She waited for her nostrils to swell with the joy and start fluttering in ecstasy. She closed her eyes and surrendered her soul to the temptations of the devil.

It was time to rekindle her affair with the bottle…

Of course the Busy Lizzies ( Impatiens Walleriana) are coming to an end now and although I do not grow them in my own garden, I continue to be fascinated with the brightness of their colours.

there were a few more of this nice white hills, but I found only space for seven of them on the camera sensor.
