Twisted Viewpoint
My perspective of the world around me is heavily influenced by being a transwoman.
A few days ago, one of the e-mail fashion newsletters I receive (The Cut) featured an article titled, "I’ve Started Dressing Like My Mother." You can guess what came to mind when I r

In 1991, when I was working in politics, Sir George Young, the Tory Minister for Housing, opined during a radio interview the homeless to be “people you step on when you leave the opera.” Pure Dickensian or what? It was this flippant remark that so enraged me to voluntarily be homeless for a month as part of a Shelter Housing Charity (england.shelter.org.uk/) awareness campaign.
My month in Plymouth sleeping rough under the stars and on a daily budget for food and necessities was extremely hard - but at least I had the benefit of doing it in July, the warmest and driest (yes, try reassuring them of that back home right now) month of the year. So I am well aware of the real-life struggles of those less fortunate without a roof over their heads; and I always find time to help, if I can.
Here in Seattle, much like The Big Issue in the UK, there’s a positive interaction with the homeless, in the form of Real Change newspaper (www.realchangenews.org/). Not only will it educate you about the plight of and programs for the homeless in the area, but those who sell it earn a living by hawking the paper, thus allowing for one less panhandler on the street, and one more person with a job in Seattle.
And “Larry” is my regular go-to vender when the paper comes out each Wednesday, where I can always find him at his usual pitch outside Ben Bridge’s (he figures the high-rollers coming out of the upmarket jewelers should feel guilty enough not to ignore him) on the corner of 4th and Pike. Like all Real Change venders I have met, Larry is always polite, quite a character and always interesting to talk to. So next time you spot a Real Change vender, please stop, buy a paper and have chat with him/her.

Hundreds came to St. John Cantius parish to begin the penitential season of Lent. This is a privileged season of grace for the entire Church. It begins the annual solemn preparation for the Easter Mystery which is the culmination of the Church Year.
The Latin name for Lent, Quadragesima, means forty and refers to the forty days Christ spent in the desert which is the origin of the Season.
As happens on every Ash Wednesday, the people receive ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross while the priest says, "Remember that thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return." Ashes are a biblical symbol of repentance, sorrow, and humility. It is a fitting beginning to this holy season dedicated to the conversion of our hearts and the need to do acts of penance for ourselves and for the world.
