WC train #19 just over 4th Ave in Oshkosh, WI just about to cross the Fox River swing bridge right behind me.
The Harriman Special takes a stroll past the restored WC Tower, in downtown Waldwick. The 1943 and train was an added bonus to the patrons of the car show going on in town.
No matter where you went, there was a sizable crowd out for this event, so the key was not trying to eliminate the crowd, but rather how can you gracefully work them into the shot as well as any other landmarks that represented the east, where the UP Business consist is foreign to. The waves from the two railfans up ahead add a nice touch.
Wisconsin Central Limited ( WC ) GP40 3018 & GTW GP38-2 6228 rest at Presidents Island, TN the WC GP40 3018 is the last one that remains in service on CN, CN took over WC around 19 years ago, most WC Power was retired from CN years ago & some SD45’s were preserved in the Illinois Railroad Museum while some were scrapped, some were stored at various lease locomotive companies & some work on other shortline or regional railroads
A CN Local Freight Train secured at Presidents Island in the Memphis, TN. area with WC GP40 3018 leading a GTW GP38-2 in CN paint.
Here we are looking south along the ROW of the original WC land grant line from Spencer, WI to Ashland, WI. Thillmany gons were loaded in Ashland and brought south. A daytime job worked from Mellen to Ashland and back, and a night job worked from Mellen down to Prentice and back. This train was the next in line - a Wausau-Prentice (or maybe it was a Prentice - Wausau turn?)
30 Thursday = WC train #219 detouring over the FRVR thru Oshkosh due to #11 derailing the day before on the north side of Oshkosh (A previous Flickr shot)
The HLGX6807, a C36-7E, leads a Wisconsin Central train on the Chicago Sub. at Mukwonago, WI. The 6807 was originaly built as Norfolk & Western C30-7 no. 8007 in 1978. 4/15/2000

You're wondering now
Occasionally business would get so good that WC would run an Extra 35 between Gladstone and Sault Ste. Marie. Normally it ran at a better time of day for eastbound shots than regular 35 which was a more late afternoon affair. Here's one of the extras leaving Trout Lake in the morning with leased LS&I U30C 3009 and WC 6509. In winter 1996 WC had 8 leased LS&I U30C's working primarily in Upper Michigan. February 21, 1996.
WC 3018 makes a pick up in Escanaba before departing for Green Bay with a pair of WC's bracketing CN 9590. 3018 looked rough 8 years ago and sadly is one of the only if not the only WC GP40 still on the roster and looks a lot rougher.
A pair of Flares bring a manifest east at the junction. The WC had been gone for over a year at this time. The third Fallen Flag Friday entry.
