The Desert View Watchtower was constructed in 1932 as a replica of a prehistoric Indian tower. This 70-foot tower is the highest point on the South Rim. The interior walls of the tower feature murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top for an outstanding view of the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert to the east, and the San Fransico Peaks to the south.
This structure was designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter. She traveled throughout the southwest to find inspiration and authenticity for her buildings. The architecture of the ancestral Puebloan people of the Colorado Plateau served as her model. This particular tower was patterned after those found at Hovenweep and the Round Tower of Mesa Verde. Ms. Colter indicated that it was not a copy of any that she had seen, but rather modeled from several.
The Desert View Watchtower is a 70-foot (21 m) high stone building located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon within the Grand Canyon National Park. The four-story structure, completed in 1932, was designed by American architect Mary Colter.
"The Baltic Sea watchtower (German: Ostsee-Grenzturm) in Börgerende is an old watchtower that belonged to the Coastal Brigade (Grenzbrigade Küste) of the East German Border Troops. As a maritime border observation tower (of type BT 11) it belonged to a series of originally 27 towers of this type on the Baltic Sea coast of East Germany, of which two have survived. The other remaining tower is in Kühlungsborn.
The tower is located right next to the beach. The East German border soldiers had the mission of observing shipping movements on the Baltic Sea and identifying escape attempts. By means of a fixed telescope with high magnification the four man crew could observe a wide area of up to 12 nautical miles distance from the observation platform.
The tower is recorded in the List of heritage monuments in Börgerende."

Took a trip out to Portland Bill today after the rain finally stopped.
I've not been there for years and never with a camera, it's a much photographed location but it'd be rude not too, really.
A little touch of colour, was most welcome after weeks of grey. 1st Image of 2016.
The Watchtower was built in the early 1860's as a coastguard station overlooking the original tidal dock of Barry, south Wales.
The upper floor served as basic accommodation and the lower floor was a boathouse. The slipway is now badly eroded.
The original dock was superseded by the much larger Barry docks (opened 1889) and the original dock is now a sand and mud flat cove that only fills with water during high spring tides.
A stone and wood watchtower stands guard over the road into Ambarvale in southern Mitgardia. The stands of birch that sound the tower are golden yellow in the late autumn sun. Soon winter will arrive and the road is busy with people preparing for the first snow.
Built for the tower category of Guild's of Historica's anniversary challenge. I've been wanting to return to some castle builds for some time and with a tower category this seemed the perfect opportunity! Influenced heavily by Isaac Snyder's Riften Watchtower.

People have gathered near the Watchtower at Desert View to witness the sunset. The low sun has reddened the foreground rocks for a brief time. By coincidence a distant cloud has lined up with the top of the tower, much like a puff of smoke above a smokestack. To the left is a line of cliffs known as the Palisades of the Desert.
