Grand Canyon Desert View, Arizona

Situated in Ardmore, Ireland, and overlooking Ram Head and the Celtic Sea, this single storey, single room look out tower was constructed by the Irish Government in just one day in 1940. It was used during World War II by coast watch personnel to log all ships and aircraft which passed Ardmore. It had a telephone connection to Ardmore post office to warn of any dangers.

Positano watchtower (Torre di Fornillo) was first built in the 15th centuary to help protect the town against pirates and other concerning parties. It is now a converted villa.

Constructed in 1932, the Watchtower was designed by Mary Colter. She was inspired by the ancestral Puebloan people of the Colorado Plateau. This tower was patterned after those at Hovenweep and Mesa Verde. From its windows the views of the Grand Canyon are extraordinary.

Another taken on my recent visit to the Mae Khon district where the banana trees turned out to be more interesting than the Mae Khon dam itself although this poor speciman seems to have taken the brunt of the recent stormy weather.

Although this shot suggests this watchtower is located in a rural area it is actually in the center a 4 million people metropolis.

Salerno Castle on the background

Berlin, Germany, 2019.

"Before the Wall fell, five watchtowers were used by the East German border guards on Bernauer Straße. You are standing before a representation of one of these watchtowers at the corner of Bernauer Straße and Strelitzer Straße.

The watchtowers stood at regular intervals of about 250 meters. The watchtowers were positioned so that the border guards posted on them had a good view of the border area on both sides. From the towers they were able to maintain surveillance of the border strip and also monitor activity in the rear area behind the border. Hence they were able to quickly notice someone who was intending to escape. Border soldiers were also expected to observe activity on the West Berlin side of the Wall.

The Berlin Wall Foundation uses an abstract representation here to show the watchtower. It is designed to give an impression of the size of the watchtower that was dismantled on Strelitzer Strasse in 1990 and also to convey a sense of the total surveillance of the border strip. The position of the steel construction is based on the tower that originally stood at this historic site. Four 11.8 meter high square-angled columns made of weathering steel are positioned into a square and set into a concrete foundation."
