Montgomery Ward opened here in 1974 by combining two pre-existing buildings into one department store. I believe there was a smaller Montgomery Ward Catalog store operation here before the full department store opened. Montgomery Ward closed in 1998 and National Wholesale Liquidators moved in before closing several years later.
The Northland Center was opened in March 1954 and will close in April 2015. The shopping center was designed by Victor Gruen and developed by the J.L.Hudson Company. Northland Center was the largest shopping center in America when it opened and had the largest department store branch in the world. In 1974, the shopping center was enclosed plus JCPenney, and Montgomery Ward were added as anchors. MainStreet / Kohl's and Target were later anchor stores as well. Kohl's closed 1994, Montgomery Ward closed 1998, JCPenney closed 1999, Target closed 2015 (February 1st), and Macy's closed 2015 (March 22nd).

In the background the gas holders of Nechells gas works are well filled, they survive but only as empty ornaments. The train is on the normally freight only Aston - Stechford line.02/03/1986

Montgomery Ward opened in 1978 and closed in 2001 with the rest of the chain.
Regency Mall opened in 1978 with Montgomery Ward, Cullum's (later Uptons), Belk, and J.B. White. A rape/murder case and a shooting, as well as changing demographics, brought about the demise of the mall. Uptons closed in 1993, followed by Belk and the movie theater in 1996, J.B. White in 1998, and then Wards in 2001. The mall itself closed in 2002 and has sat empty ever since. It was raining when I took these pictures, so most of the shots are from the car.

Castle Ward
Co Down, Northern Ireland.
Castle Ward has been the home of the Ward family since ca. 1570.
The current building was built in the early 1760's.
The house and its gardens were presented to the National Trust in 1952.
Montgomery Ward closed nationally in 2001, but this store has been sitting here vacant since then. It's probably the only Montgomery Ward building still standing with complete signage. This is located in the (now closed) Greenville Mall.

While walking along the Cornwall Canal last week we saw a cyclist coming toward us and asked him where is was from. He said he was from Belgium and touring the world on his bike. His name is Ward and he is 24 years old. He recently graduated from University and decided to travel the world before he gets tied down with a job and life in general.
Ward started his journey in Belgium across Europe then the Middle East. Once in Vietnam he decided to take a flight to Vancouver. He landed on July 12th and proceeded to bike across Canada from the West Coast to the East Coast. He generally stays in campsites overnight but recently slept on a picnic table because it was getting too dark to find a suitable location.
Once he completes his Canadian journey he plans on flying to New Zealand and bike across Australia.
Messing around. Trying different things. Kinda sloppy I know.
Should have connected my R and D. Oh well. I had fun.

The Denison Central Ward School located in Denison Texas. Closed. It sits on the entire 700 block of Sears & Morton Streets. The School opened in 1917 & closed its' doors in 1979. Today the school sits idle & in pretty bad shape. Portions of this info & the following info was gathered from the website: www.heralddemocrat.com/hd/Commentary/9-15-2010Donna-Col-f... ... Central Ward School was built in 1917 and at that time the newspaper article reported that Stevens and Burleson schools were consolidated to form that Central Ward. Central still occupies the entire 700 block of Sears and Morton streets, but no longer belongs to the Denison school system or the City of Denison. It is in sad shape and is for sale. The doors to Central Ward School closed in 1979, but there are many of us who still remember attending classes in that once wonderful building.
Mavis said she found another source that says that Washington and Burleson schools were consolidated to form Central Ward in 1917. But it was in 1927 that the old Stevens school building was to be abandoned, the school board announced that students would be transferred to Central Ward. There's a little year discrepancy in records there, but whatever the date, Stevens became part of Central Ward School.
*There's rumors that the School is Haunted*
