The 1898 Montgomery Ward Tower
Montgomery Ward
Life Span: 1899-Present
Location: 6 N. Michigan Avenue
Architect: Richard E. Schmidt
Stories: 12
<bThe Tower Building, at 6 N. Michigan Ave.,
on the N.W. corner of Madison /Michigan,
formerly known as the Montgomery Ward & Co. building,
with a frontage of 86 feet on N. Michigan avenue
and 163 feet on E. Madison street,
was built in 1899 of steel frame construction
to a height of 12 stories,
with a tower and one basement, on 50-foot wood pile foundations.
The three lower floors were designed for a live load of 200 pounds per square foot, the nine upper floors for 150 pounds per square foot.
This made it possible for later owners to add four stories without reinforcing the columns of the lower stories.
Richard E. Schmidt was the architect.
The 22.5-foot weather vane, Progress Lighting the Way for Commerce, was set October 20, 1900.
It was modeled by J. Massey Rhine.
The street facade of the lower three stories is of carved Georgia marble.
The cost of the original building was 36.7 cents per cubic foot.
At the time of its completion, this was the tallest building in Chicago.
Originally at 394 feet high, the Montgomery Ward Building is currently 282 feet (86 m) tall,
following the removal of a pyramid top and sculpture.

Castle Ward and Mahee Castle were both built by the first wave of adventurers who arrived in Ulster in the 1570's as part of a new colonisation enterprise.Built close to the shore, these fortified houses helped control the burgeoning trade routes into Ulster.
The Castle or Tower House was swallowed up by the Castle Ward estate now run by the National Trust.
This giant eagle was exhibited at the World's Fair in St Louis in 1903. It was later purchased by JC Nichols and donated to Kansas City in 1935.
It now hangs out in one of the medians on Ward Parkway in Kansas City.

The Wards Island Bridge, also known as the 103rd Street Footbridge, is a pedestrian bridge crossing the Harlem River between Manhattan Island and Wards Island in New York City. The vertical lift bridge has a total of twelve spans consisting of steel towers and girders. It carries only pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
On the Manhattan side of the river, the bridge is located at East 103rd Street, between Exits 14 and 15 of the FDR Drive. The bridge is accessible from the East River Greenway and a pedestrian overpass across the FDR Drive to the East River Houses apartment complex in Spanish Harlem. The bridge connects to the southwestern corner of Wards Island and provides access to the many playing fields and scenic waterfront of Randall's Island and Wards Island Parks.
After being closed to the public for approximately two years for a $16.8 million infrastructure project, Wards Island Bridge was reopened on June 1, 2012 and will be open 24 hours-a-day year-round. Previously, the bridge had only been available for use from April through October during daylight hours.
