Sycamore Gap from south of the gap. This is an optical illusion that makes it appear as if the tree is emerging from sheep stell. It isn't: it's growing out of the curtain wall, behind. A sapling inside the stell ensures this view will continue for many years to come. Looking N.

Damage from shrapnel is clearly visible on this building from the 1910 Wall Street bombing, which killed 38 and wounded hundreds of others.
"At noon, a wagon passed by lunchtime crowds on Wall Street in New York City and stopped across the street from the headquarters of the J.P. Morgan bank at 23 Wall Street, on the Financial District's busiest corner. Inside, 100 pounds of dynamite with 500 pounds of heavy, cast-iron sash weights exploded in a timer-set detonation, sending the slugs tearing through the air. The horse and wagon were blasted into small fragments."
The cast-iron weights slammed into the surrounding buildings, leaving marks which can be still be seen today.

Wall, South Dakota, "the geographic center of nowhere," is probably known best to cross-country travellers for its main attraction, Wall Drug. Advertised on gigantic billboards for hundred of miles to the west and east on Interstate 90, the gargantuan drug store has put Wall on the nation's map. There are also Wall Drug signs all over the world telling how many miles to Wall Drug.

One of the world’s most well-known tourist attractions, it’s hard to believe Wall Drug Store got its start with something many wouldn’t even turn their heads at today … the promise of free ice water. But in fact, the Husteads turned free ice water into a million-dollar idea with a little determination, quick thinking and a lot of signs.
Signs with catchy jingles like “Get a soda . . . Get a root beer . . . turn next corner . . . Just as near . . . To Highway 16 & 14. . . Free Ice Water. . . Wall Drug” drew weary travelers into the small-town drug store to enjoy a refreshing break. Today, more than 2 million visitors a year stop at the popular roadside attraction for a meal or activity, 5 cent coffee, and ice water – which is still free.
Located in Wall, South Dakota, Wall Drug has always been a popular stop on the road to the more populated areas like Mount Rushmore or Rapid City. As a matter of fact, when the United States Air Force operated the Minuteman missile silos east of Wall, the Hustead family offered free coffee and donuts to the service personnel as they traveled to and from Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City. Wall Drug honors the men and women in the armed services by providing them free coffee and donuts to this day.

The small town drugstore made its first step towards fame when it was purchased by Ted Hustead in 1931. Hustead was a Nebraska native and pharmacist who was looking for a small town with a Catholic church in which to establish his business. He bought Wall Drug, located in a 231-person town in what he referred to as "the middle of nowhere," and strove to make a living. Business was very slow until his wife, Dorothy, thought of advertising free ice water to parched travelers heading to the newly opened Mount Rushmore monument 60 miles (97 km) to the west. From that time on business was brisk.
Wall Drug earned much of its fame from its self-promotion. Billboards advertising the establishment can be seen for hundreds of miles throughout South Dakota and the neighboring states. In addition, many visitors of Wall Drug have erected signs throughout the world announcing the miles to Wall Drug from famous locations. By 1981 Wall Drug was claiming it was giving away 20,000 cups of water per day during the peak tourist season, lasting from Memorial Day until Labor Day, and during the hottest days of the summer.
November 9, 2009 is the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. These views were made when the Wall was very much in place - a barrier and physical reminder of the Cold War, the fear of war, and the division of a people.

The German Defence Wall Decoration (Deutsches Schutzwall Ehrenzeichen) instituted on August 2nd 1939 for bestowal on over 60,000 workers, designers & planners of the Siegfried Line & other defences to the Western borders of Germany.
Soldiers stationed on the defences prior to May 1940 also found themselves eligible for award of the medal.
This example remained unissued & as such is in mint condition & retains its paper packet.

The restoration then moved onto the remainder of the North wall where she uncovered two tiers of paintings. These are not by the same painter but nevertheless are interesting, in the top tier there are six subjects, and in the lower tier four subjects, but one of these is very hard to make out. The paintings are mostly in red ochre but also some are in yellow. They can be identified as follows:
Upper Tier - looking from left to right:
1.Christ entering the Gate of Jerusalem on a donkey which is in yellow ochre.
2.The Gate of Jerusalem. A small head is looking down from the battlements. Slight traces of a figure can be seen in the archway.
3.Christ kneeling and washing the feet of Peter.
4.The Last Supper. Judas is seen stealing the bag of money and a fish from the table.
5.The Betrayal, Judas, Christ and two Soldiers.
6.Christ before Pontius Pilate. Christ’s hands are bound and He is blindfolded.
Lower Tier:
1.The martyrdom of Saint Edmund. He is bound to a tree and being shot by the Danes with bows and arrows.
2.This is indecipherable.
3.A large "Pelican in Piety" painted in red, pecking at her breasts and so drawing blood to feed her five chicks.
4.This subject is in some doubt, but appears to be a King, Queen and a Courtier bearing a Hawk. Perhaps the first part of "The Three Living and the Three Dead".

Then Ted's wife Dorothy got to advertise "Free Ice Water" to tourists heading to Mount Rushmore some 60 miles away. The Free Ice Water Gimmick worked and the rest is history. Today Wall Drug a is a major tourist attraction consisting of a large collection of cowboy themed stores that includes the Drug Store along with several restaurants, snack bar, gift shops and a number of other stores. More than two million visitors annually attraction in the small town of Wall, South Dakota. And year you can still get a free cup of Ice Water just for stopping in.
