We're deep inside the Nolichucky River Gorge on the former Clinchfield, as CSX 346 leads northbound coal empties at Wall Curve milepost 143.5 on Oct. 20, 2000. Erwin TN lies 10 miles ahead.

There was nothing much to see in a former Soviet base building, but winter had done its job and I found this interesting wall to take photos of. All covered in ice.

Seen on a street near Kunst Haus Wien, the Hundertwasser Museum. I'm guessing the tiles may have been painted by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Die Wiekhäuser befinden sich rundum auf der Stadtmauer. Wiek steht für wachen, also Wachhäuser.
Es sind insgesamt noch 25 Stück, ursprünglich waren es 56 Wehrtürme. Ab 1671 wurden die Wehrtürme zu Wohnhäusern umgebaut. Diese sind allerdings alle nach 1945 verfallen, weil Geld fehlte. Seit 1970 sind 23 Wiekhäuser im Stil der alten Wohnhäuser wieder aufgebaut worden. Ausserdem wurden zwei Rekonstruktionen der ursprünglichen Wehrtürme errichtet. Heute werden die Wiekhäuser als Restaurants, Bars, Wohnungen, Vereine und vom Museum genutzt.

Last but by far not least - my fav part of Memmingen: The "Ulmer Vorstadt" ("Suburb of Ulm") with a part of the old city wall (completed around 1450) on the right side and the "Stadtbach" ("town river")* on the left side. If the tree wasn't hiding it, you could see the once highest of all towers guarding Memmingen, the so-called 'Luginsland' (kind of a watchtower).

* The 'Stadtbach' is actually the small river that used to run through medieval towns. When the towns kept growing and more space was needed, many of the rivers were moved underground - only in the recent years it was discovered that these small rivers are little gems, making a city a lot more beautiful. That's why nowadays you can see many of them surfacing again.
