What to do when in a city you mostly just storm through, and you have enough free time? Walk, observe, and snap a photo here and there!

Here, me in Rijeka, March 2021.

For historical fantasy fans, the idyllic little Fife hamlet of Falkland, not far from Dunfermline, is instantly recognisable as the opening location for the epic drama Outlander (www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFFKjptRr7Y), where Frank and Claire Randall head to in 1940 on what proves to be their fateful second honeymoon and where their lives are completely turned upside down.

In the series, it represent Inverness from the 1740s, 1940s and the 1960s. The attraction of the little town as the location for the filming is clear to see, as its full of genuine little touches all around that stretches back even further than the eighteenth century where Claire - almost Brigadoon-like - is first transported back in time to.

One such is the quaint east of Scotland tradition of "wedding lintels" (also known as nuptial, marriage or lintel stone), a carved inscription above the doorway of a house owned by newly-married couples that primarily date from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century.

They would show the initials of the newly-weds sandwiched in-between the year of their nuptials. The one pictured from my recent day trip to a very sunny and warm Falkland is from 1686 and commemorates the marriage of "GB" and "MH".

Many of the original buildings have been rebuilt over the centuries, but the tradition has always been to re-incorporate the original marriage lintel in the new structure for good luck, invariable over the new front door entrance, or here, perhaps where the original door was once located.

If you want to go panoramic on film really on a budget, you can always grab one of those cameras from the late 1990s that have light baffles just in front of a film that crops standard photos to fake panoramic. While it is fully faked, with a proper wide-angle lens, the resulting photos can look not that bad!

Here, I did just that - I acquired Pentax MZ-5, one of those cameras with fake panoramic baffles. The good part is it crops even the viewfinder, the bad part is it's just a crop, you'd need a seriously wide-angle lens for a good effect - 19mm here helped.

There was a time when my office was situated on the outskirts of the city, but not as far as the pseudo-industrial part of the outskirts, so we got more than a few office buildings, a hotel and a tennis court nearby. Sounds posh, but it's nothing to actually write home about - everything is just a nondescript, minimalist, straight-lines-are-the-cheapest-to-build building.

Developed in Fomadon R09, 1+100 for 120+ minutes, with continuous agitation for the first minute, and a few inversions at first two half-hour marks.

Recently, I've been developing black & white film I have in the queue, and I dropped a ball with this one - I got sloppy, left it in the developer for more than full two hours, and concluded a few more agitations will be needed. Apparently, there was too much agitation now, the grain is overwhelming. Then I got sloppy while fixing the film, too, I forgot a few inversions, and apparently, my fixer was near the end of its life and I failed to realize that. I even got impatient, didn't wash the film enough with demineralized water, so I have drying stains all over the emulsion. A few days later, I realized my film is still partially purple, meaning it wasn't fixed enough, so off it went into another 10 minutes of fixing in the exhausted fixer. That solved purple tint issue and most of drying stains, but it took me some time and a few not really gentle attempts to load the film on the reels. So, this poor film took quite a lot of beating and scratching, but that's not all of it - just wait for the other one I developed with this one, that one took even more punishment.

Snowy sunny days are great for brisk photo walks, or your nose will grow icicles. I did just that - had a quick and energetic walk to the neighbouring lake. February 2018.

New lens means obligatory drive around the countryside, can't use the lens before testing it. Why not test the unknown lens with equally unknown film, which expired some 16-17 years ago! What could possibly go wrong!? Well, at first, somehow I managed to turn manual ISO override do 6400, which took me half of the roll to realize that. After that, I reverted ISO override to box-speed, like the film didn't sit somewhere for the last decade and a half. That could explain the non-linear tonal response of the film - those shadows are pretty dark!

When you are in a mood of walking around, just carry the Leica ( or other RF camera ) with 35mm or 50mm small lens.

All you have to do is turning the focusing knob in your hand with finding something you wanna shoot, then look into the viewfinder and shoot ... it does need less than 10sec.

It’s the final lockdown? Or is it? Either way, there’s a song in there somewhere… But, while nothing is certain these days, let’s hope that we are at last emerging from the frustrating series of restrictions we’ve endured for the past year or so.

And as the pubs here in Glasgow's South Side began the long process of re-opening their doors, the next worry was the 'pingdemic', as it's been dubbed, had the bar/hospitality staff frantically checking their smartphones to see whether they needed to self-isolate or not after receiving a little message from the NHS app; and indeed management worrying if they did, whether they could continue to stay open, that could only produced further disruptions and uncertainty.

Worrying also as some pubs, such as my local, the Victoria Bar (m.facebook.com/pages/category/Pub/Victoria-Bar-1662614917...) have been a lifeline for many - and this particular pub serving the Govanhill area has always played a vital role in the community. There's always been a pub on this particular corner of Victoria Rd and Allison St since 1887 - and when the old pub was knocked down in the name of progress and new housing at the turn of the 20th century, the Victoria Bar (with tenements built above) emerged in 1903 like a phoenix from the ashes.

It's a pub's pub - old school with friendly and helpful staff and full of wisecracking punters. And the slightly myopic character invariably found half hanging out its entrance, with his trademark fag in hand, wearing his leather waistcoat, and forever checking his smartphone - though this time perhaps worrying he or the staff receive the dreaded ping! - is none other than Marius Lynch, the licensee holder.

The good news is that here in the UK we are pre-testing and quarantining everyone at our newly rediscovered sovereign borders to keep Covid and its variants out. The bad news is that it has taken Boris and his government nearly a year and over 100,000 deaths to finally cotton on to this. "D'oh!" as Homer Simpson would say.

But then again, Boris is a living example of the Dunning-Kruger effect in action. That and elite public school privilege. What the country really needs is for some Tory backbenchers to suddenly find a spine and admit that terrible mistakes have been made and more than 100,000 dead is an unacceptable price to pay for a so-called prime minister whose entire life has just been a vanity project.

Either that, or we'll all end up living out a steampunk-level of PPE by wearing military protective uniforms and gas-masks 24/7.
