I watched this pied-billed grebe in an epic struggle with a fish for several minutes. Not sure if the fish lived to swim another day or not, but it sure put up a fight. It was a pretty big fish for that small grebe.
Now let me tell you that taking this picture was quite a challenge for me. Every year when winter comes I feel like I was born and grew up in the wrong country. My origins being from southern Italy, I just don’t seem to be able to get used to these cold temperatures. So to venture out into the cold yesterday I had to wear what felt like a hundred layers of clothing, including a white winter jacket, bonnet and gloves, which made me look like the Michelin Tyre Man. Wearing so much didn’t make walking up the hill very easy, while trying not to attract any attention, as I was trespassing a farmer’s property and land, carrying my tripod and holding my camera with long lens, which looked like a big rifle. Of course the farmer discovered me as I couldn't be missed. Luckily he just smiled at me and greeted friendly. After all, he did get entertained for free! I wish you all a lovely Sunday!
The 6.2L V8 in my new Camaro SS doesn't compare to the 4400hp in the ES44 pulling this westbound grain through Coon Rapids today, but it sure will out accelerate most other vehicles on the road! Thanks to Greg Smith for the idea of shooting my new car with a train.
Union Pacific's Global 2, Illinois to Lathrop, California premium intermodal passes the conglomerate (not to be confused with sandstone) cliffs of Echo Canyon, Utah on Oct. 11, 2024.
Conglomerate is a sedimentary rock, composed of rounded quartz pebbles, cobbles, and boulders surrounded by a matrix of sand and finer material, and cemented with silica, iron oxide, or calcium carbonate. The rock fragments are rounded from being rolled along a stream bed or a beach.
The Echo Canyon formations range in age from 45 to 125 million years old.

Fall colors defy winter in a landscape scene taken a day after a major early snowstorm hit the province..
Heading home after a night out I noticed light in the sky towards the sea. I took a small detour to the pier to see a storm in the sea, a few kilometers away. I somehow strapped my camera to one of the beams supporting the handrail of the pier and set up a long exposure. Then I kept shooting hoping for the best. Then the best happened :)
A juvenile bald eagle and a Canada goose squabble after the eagle tried to land near a flock of geese on the Des Moines River. Despite what the photo might suggest, the goose won this confrontation, and the eagle flew off a few seconds later.

The beauty of the Madeiran mountain range, which can be admired along the path that connects Madeira's 3 highest peaks: starting at Pico do Arieiro (1810 m), passing by Pico das Torres (1851 m) and Pico Ruivo (1861 m).
From Pico Ruivo, one can walk back to Pico do Arieiro, or take a pleasant and easy walk towards Achada do Teixeira.
