As part of VORTEX-Southeast, CIMMS Researcher Kim Klockow-McClain visited Alabama and Georgia months after a devastating tornado killed 23 people and injured numerous others in 2019.
She is researching why that storm system was so deadly. She is a societal impacts and behavioral insights researcher whose work supports NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory.

November 6, 2022 - "Crews installed a new sculpture entitled “Vortex” outside Mitchell Hall on May 12. The artwork is fabricated from aluminum plates and was designed by artists Jeanine Centuori and Russell Rock of UrbanRock Design. Vortex is designed to bridge the past and the future. In their proposal, the artists said, “Mt. Vernon Avenue’s community past is represented in the collection of place names and qualities, while Columbus State and the opportunities of education are shown through the verbs of action and growth. Together they are the blending of the history of the community and the futures to be discovered in education.”
Funding for the sculpture was included in the original construction budget. Any public building in Ohio receiving $4 million or more in a capital appropriation, as Mitchell Hall did, is required to allocate one percent of the money for art." This is vortex shedding from a cylinder - the cylinder is moving to the right and can be seen on the right edge of the photo. One side was painted solid with dye and the other side was painted with stripes - as a result the vortices shedding from one side of the cylinder are solid and from the other are striped. This photo was taken more than 15 years ago for my thesis - I took it using a35 mm black and white film (Ilford 400 ASA) then printed in the darkrooom. I recently found the scanned images I used to place the photos into my thesis - I scanned - again over 15 years ago - using a Logitech Hand scanner (the ones that are 4 inches wide) and still have the TIF files today!

This is an image of vortices shedding from a tapered cylinder (has moved off to the right). The slanting nature is due to changing shedding frequencies with cylinder size - the high lighted area (which I etched into the original print) is a breakdown area (In more detail in photo titled Vortex Breakdown area) - this breakdown is necessary in order to maintain continuous vorticity in the fluid.

Surrounding the base of the vortex are control panels for shaping the air column with a series of dampers. Viewing from the Balcony Level, you can activate lasers to cut through the vortex and reveal its laminar (smooth) and turbulent airflow patterns."
